Abstract

A surgical stapling instrument is disclosed. An end effector for the surgical stapling instrument comprises a staple cartridge assembly and an anvil. The staple cartridge assembly comprises a proximal end, a distal end, and a cartridge body comprising a shortened nose at the distal end. The staple cartridge assembly further comprises staples removably stored in the cartridge body, a driver configured to support at least one of the staples, and a sled movable toward the distal end. The sled comprises a ramp configured to lift the driver and at least one of the staples and a base, wherein the shortened nose of the cartridge body is shorter than the base of the sled. The anvil comprises a staple forming surface comprising a plurality of staple forming pockets and a blunt distal nose extending downward toward the staple cartridge assembly.

Claims (40)

1. A staple cartridge assembly, comprising:

a proximal end;

a distal cartridge end;

a longitudinal axis extending between said proximal end and said distal cartridge end;

a cartridge body, comprising:

a staple cavity zone, comprising:

a top deck surface that directly supports tissue during a firing stroke; and

a first bottom surface opposite said top deck surface; and

a blunt nose at said distal cartridge end, wherein said blunt nose comprises a second bottom surface, wherein said blunt nose extends below said first bottom surface, wherein said blunt nose has a nose height and a nose length, wherein said nose length is measured along said longitudinal axis, wherein said nose height is measured transversely to said longitudinal axis, wherein said nose height is measured from said second bottom surface to said top deck surface, and wherein said nose height is greater than or equal to said nose length;

a plurality of staple cavities defined within said cartridge body, wherein said plurality of staple cavities extends longitudinally from said proximal end toward said distal cartridge end, wherein said plurality of staple cavities are located within said staple cavity zone;

a plurality of staples removably stored within said plurality of staple cavities, wherein said nose length is measured from a distal end of said top deck surface to a tip at said distal cartridge end;

a driver configured to support at least one of said plurality of staples; and

a sled movable toward said distal cartridge end during said firing stroke, wherein said sled comprises:

a first ramp; and

a second ramp, wherein said first ramp is laterally offset from said second ramp, wherein said first ramp and said second ramp are configured to lift said driver, and wherein said blunt nose of said cartridge body comprises a first recess formed within said distal cartridge end configured to receive said first ramp of said sled after the completion of said firing stroke and a second recess formed within said distal cartridge end configured to receive said second ramp of said sled after said firing stroke has been completed.

2. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 1 , wherein said driver comprises a first driver portion configured to support a first staple, a second driver portion configured to support a second staple, and a third driver portion configured to support a third staple.

3. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 2 , wherein said driver further comprises a central base member which connects said first driver portion, said second driver portion, and said third driver portion.

4. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 3 , wherein said first driver portion comprises a first forward support column comprising a proximal end and said second driver portion comprises a second forward support column comprising a distal end, wherein said central base member extends longitudinally between said proximal end of the said first forward support column and said distal end of said second forward support column.

5. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 3 , wherein said central base member comprises a rearwardly-angled wall configured to be engaged by said sled, wherein said rearwardly-angled wall faces toward said proximal end of said staple cartridge assembly.

6. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 1 , wherein said sled is configured to drive said driver toward an anvil positioned opposite said staple cartridge assembly.

7. A staple cartridge assembly, comprising:

a proximal end;

a distal cartridge end;

a cartridge body, comprising:

a staple cavity zone, comprising:

a top deck surface that directly supports tissue during a firing stroke;

a plurality of extensions extending upwardly from said top deck surface; and

a first bottom surface opposite said top deck surface; and

a blunt nose at said distal cartridge end, wherein said blunt nose has a nose height and a nose length, wherein said nose height is greater than or equal to said nose length, wherein said blunt nose comprises a second bottom surface and a distal tip comprising a flat surface and an angled surface, wherein said blunt nose extends below said first bottom surface, and wherein said nose height is measured from said second bottom surface to a top surface of a distal-most extension of the plurality of extensions;

a plurality of staple cavities defined within said cartridge body, wherein said plurality of staple cavities extends longitudinally from said proximal end toward said distal cartridge end, wherein said plurality of staple cavities are located within said staple cavity zone, and wherein said nose length is measured from a distal end of the distal-most extension to said distal tip;

a plurality of staples removably stored within said plurality of staple cavities;

a driver configured to support at least one of said plurality of staples; and

a sled movable toward said distal cartridge end during said firing stroke, wherein said sled comprises:

a first ramp; and

a second ramp, wherein said first ramp is laterally offset from said second ramp, wherein said first ramp and said second ramp are configured to lift said driver, and wherein said blunt nose of said cartridge body comprises a first recess formed within said distal cartridge end configured to receive said first ramp of said sled after the completion of said firing stroke and a second recess formed within said distal cartridge end configured to receive said second ramp of said sled after said firing stroke has been completed, wherein said first ramp and said second ramp are exposed at said distal cartridge end and remain in said distal cartridge end upon the completion of said firing stroke.

8. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 7 , wherein said driver comprises a first driver portion configured to support a first staple, a second driver portion configured to support a second staple, and a third driver portion configured to support a third staple.
