Abstract

A respiratory mask assembly for delivering breathable gas to a patient includes a frame and an elbow assembly. The frame has a front surface and a rear surface adapted in use to face the patient. The frame includes a main body providing an aperture therethrough for the introduction of breathable gas into a nasal breathing cavity. The elbow assembly is swivelably coupled to the front surface of the frame. The elbow assembly includes a swivel elbow that defines an intake port and an exhaust port separated from the intake port using a baffle. The elbow assembly includes an end portion that interfaces with the aperture of the frame.

Claims (72)

1. A respiratory mask to deliver breathable gas, at a pressure elevated above atmospheric pressure in a range of 3-20 cm H 2 O, to a patient for positive airway pressure treatment of sleep disordered breathing, the respiratory mask comprising:

a cushion to deliver the breathable gas to the patient's airways;

a support structure to support the cushion, the support structure being relatively rigid with respect to the cushion, the support structure and the cushion together at least partially forming a chamber; and

a connector connected to the support structure, the connector comprising:

a mask end provided to the support structure and in fluid communication with an interior of the cushion;

a supply conduit end adapted to connect with an outlet of a breathable gas supply conduit, a longitudinal axis of the supply conduit end being disposed at an angle to a longitudinal axis of the mask end;

a body portion having a plurality of holes formed therein to direct a gas washout flow containing CO 2 from an interior of the body portion to an area exterior of the body portion; and

a cap portion detachably connected to an exterior surface of the body portion, the cap portion being non-tubular,

wherein the cap portion is configured to reduce noise of the gas washout flow after the gas washout flow passes through the plurality of holes.

2. The respiratory mask as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the cap portion is configured to reduce turbulence of the gas washout flow.

3. The respiratory mask as claimed in claim 2 , wherein the cap portion is configured to cause the gas washout flow to approach a laminar state.

4. The respiratory mask as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the cap portion is configured to provide a pressure drop across the cap portion from an upstream side of the cap portion to a downstream side of the cap portion in a direction of the gas washout flow.

5. The respiratory mask as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the cap portion has an underside that is of complimentary shape to a portion of the exterior surface of the body portion.

6. The respiratory mask as claimed in claim 5 , wherein the body portion has a tubular shape, a surface on the underside of the cap portion having an arc shape that corresponds to the tubular shape of the body portion.

7. The respiratory mask as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the longitudinal axis of the supply conduit end is substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the mask end.

8. The respiratory mask as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the plurality of holes is formed in the body portion downstream of the mask end relative to the gas washout flow and is in fluid communication with the interior of the respiratory mask via the body portion.

9. The respiratory mask as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising a swivel joiner at the supply conduit end to connect with the outlet of the breathable gas supply conduit.

10. The respiratory mask of claim 1 , further comprising two lower strap connectors and two upper strap connectors.

11. The respiratory mask of claim 1 , wherein the cap portion and body portion are fixed relative to each other when attached, and

wherein the body portion includes grooves formed therein and adapted to respectively engage ridges on the cap portion to attach the cap portion to the body portion,

wherein said grooves comprises two grooves respectively disposed on opposing sides of the body portion,

wherein said ridges comprises two ridges respectively extending along opposing edges of the cap portion,

wherein the cap portion has an underside that is of complimentary shape to a portion of the exterior surface of the body portion,

wherein the body portion has a tubular shape, a surface on the underside of the cap portion having an arc shape that corresponds to the tubular shape of the body portion, and

wherein the cap portion defines a vent outlet, the vent outlet providing an outlet to atmosphere for the gas washout flow.

12. A respiratory mask to deliver breathable gas, at a pressure elevated above atmospheric pressure in a range of 3-20 cm H 2 O, to a patient for positive airway pressure treatment of sleep disordered breathing, the respiratory mask comprising:

a cushion to deliver the breathable gas to the patient's airways;

a support structure to support the cushion, the support structure being relatively rigid with respect to the cushion, the support structure and the cushion together at least partially forming a chamber; and

a connector connected to the support structure, the connector comprising:

a mask end provided to the support structure and in fluid communication with an interior of the cushion;

a supply conduit end adapted to connect with an outlet of a breathable gas supply conduit, a longitudinal axis of the supply conduit end being disposed at an angle to a longitudinal axis of the mask end;

a body portion having a plurality of holes formed therein to direct a gas washout flow containing CO 2 from an interior of the body portion to an area exterior of the body portion; and

a cap portion detachably connected to an exterior surface of the body portion,

wherein the cap portion is configured to reduce noise of the gas washout flow after the gas washout flow passes through the plurality of holes, and

wherein the body portion includes at least one groove formed therein and adapted to respectively engage at least one ridge on the cap portion to attach the cap portion to the body portion.

13. The respiratory mask as claimed in claim 12 , wherein the cap portion is attached to the body portion in a direction transverse to the longitudinal axis of the supply conduit end.

14. The respiratory mask as claimed in claim 12 , wherein said at least one groove comprises two grooves respectively disposed on opposing sides of the body portion, and

wherein each said groove has an edge that forms a curve along the body portion.

15. The respiratory mask as claimed in claim 14 , wherein said at least one ridge comprises two ridges respectively extending along opposing edges of the cap portion.

16. The respiratory mask as claimed in claim 15 , wherein each said ridge forms a curve along the cap portion.

17. The respiratory mask as claimed in claim 15 , wherein each said ridge extends substantially an entire extent of the respective edge of the cap portion.

18. A respiratory mask to deliver breathable gas, at a pressure elevated above atmospheric pressure in a range of 3-20 cm H 2 O, to a patient for positive airway pressure treatment of sleep disordered breathing, the respiratory mask comprising:

a cushion to deliver the breathable gas to the patient's airways;

a support structure to support the cushion, the support structure being relatively rigid with respect to the cushion; and

a connector connected to the support structure, the connector comprising:

a mask end provided to the support structure and in fluid communication with an interior of the cushion;

a supply conduit end adapted to connect with an outlet of a breathable gas supply conduit;

a body portion having a plurality of holes formed therein to direct a gas washout flow containing CO 2 from an interior of the body portion to an area exterior of the body portion; and

a cap portion detachably connected to an exterior surface of the body portion and structured to reduce noise created by the gas washout flow after passing through the plurality of holes,

wherein the body portion includes at least one groove formed therein and adapted to engage at least one ridge on the cap portion to attach the cap portion to the body portion.

19. The respiratory mask as claimed in claim 18 , wherein said at least one groove comprises two grooves respectively disposed on opposing sides of the body portion.

20. The respiratory mask as claimed in claim 19 , wherein each said groove has an edge that forms a curve along the body portion.

21. The respiratory mask as claimed in claim 19 , wherein said at least one ridge comprises two ridges respectively extending adjacent opposing edges of the cap portion.

22. The respiratory mask as claimed in claim 21 , wherein each said ridge forms a curve along the cap portion.

23. The respiratory mask as claimed in claim 18 , wherein the cap portion is configured to reduce turbulence of the gas washout flow.

24. The respiratory mask as claimed in claim 23 , wherein the cap portion is configured to cause the gas washout flow to approach a laminar state.

25. The respiratory mask as claimed in claim 18 , wherein the cap portion is configured to provide a pressure drop across the cap portion from an upstream side of the cap portion to a downstream side of the cap portion in a direction of the gas washout flow.

26. The respiratory mask as claimed in claim 18 , wherein the cap portion has an underside that is of complimentary shape to a portion of the exterior surface of the body portion.

27. The respiratory mask as claimed in claim 26 , wherein the body portion has a tubular shape, a surface on the underside of the cap portion having an arc shape that corresponds to the tubular shape of the body portion.

28. The respiratory mask as claimed in claim 18 , wherein a longitudinal axis of the supply conduit end is substantially perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the mask end.

29. The respiratory mask as claimed in claim 18 , further comprising:

a swivel joiner at the supply conduit end to connect with the outlet of the breathable gas supply conduit,

two lower strap connectors; and

two upper strap connectors.

30. The respiratory mask of claim 18 , further comprising two lower strap connector and two upper strap connectors,

wherein a longitudinal axis of the supply conduit end is disposed at an angle to a longitudinal axis of the mask end,

wherein the cap portion and body portion are fixed relative to each other when attached,

wherein the cap portion is configured to have direct contact with the gas washout flow after the gas washout flow passes through the plurality of holes,

wherein the cap portion is configured to provide a pressure drop across the cap portion from an upstream side of the cap portion to a downstream side of the cap portion in a direction of the gas washout flow,

wherein said at least one ridge comprises two ridges respectively extending adjacent opposing edges of the cap portion, and each ridge forms a curve along the cap portion,

wherein the plurality of holes is formed in the body portion downstream of the mask end relative to the gas washout flow and is in fluid communication with the interior of the respiratory mask via the body portion, and

wherein the cap portion defines a vent outlet, the vent outlet providing an outlet to atmosphere for the gas washout flow.
