Abstract

A seismic survey system having a source array ( 11 ) coupled to a deflector device ( 15 ) that controls the position of the source array. A positioning system unit ( 16 ) is mounted on the source array to provide a signal to a controller, informing the controller of the current position of the source array so that the controller can control the position of the deflector device ( 15 ) and the coupled source array. A seismic source ( 14 ) on the source array may be triggered when the source array is at a desired location as measured by the positioning system unit. The deflector device ( 15 ) comprises one or more wings ( 18 ) in a generally vertical or, alternatively, in a generally horizontal arrangement disposed adjacent to a central body ( 19 ). The streamlined central body has connection points that allow the deflector device ( 15 ) to be connected to a tow cable ( 13 ) from the tow vessel ( 12 ) and to the source array ( 11 ).

Claims (28)

1. A method of positioning a seismic source array in tow behind a vessel, comprising:

determining the position of the seismic source array; and

using a computer controlled adjustable wing that is installed on the seismic source array to adjust and move the seismic source array to a desired lateral position, wherein the adjustable wing is positioned at a lateral distance from the seismic source array in a crossline direction.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

controlling the adjustable wing to steer the seismic source array to the desired position.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

determining the position of the seismic source array, and

providing the position to a computer that controls the adjustable wing.

4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising:

triggering the seismic source array when the seismic source array is at a desired position.

5. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

actuating an actuator that is connected with the adjustable wing to adjust the position of the adjustable wing.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising:

transmitting a control signal to the actuator; and

moving the adjustable wing with the actuator, wherein the movement of the adjustable wing steers the seismic source array.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

coupling a second adjustable wing to a second seismic source array for controlling a second position of the second seismic source array.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

positioning the seismic source array so that its positioning is repeated over a grid that has been previously surveyed.

9. The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

adjusting the lateral position of the first seismic source array and the second seismic source array with the respective adjustable wings, to maintain a desired separation between the first seismic source array and the second seismic source array.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

adjusting the lateral position of the seismic source array in view of ocean currents.

11. A seismic survey system for use in water, comprising:

a seismic air gun source array;

a computer controlled adjustable wing coupled to the seismic air gun source array, wherein the computer controlled adjustable wing comprises a body that is connected to the seismic air gun source array and a wing that is supported by the body and is positioned at a lateral distance from the seismic air gun source array in a crossline direction, wherein the computer controlled adjustable wing is adjustably attached to the body and thereby controls the position of the seismic air gun source array when in tow through water.

12. The seismic survey system of claim 11 , wherein the positioning system comprises a positioning unit mounted with the seismic air gun source array, and the positioning unit provides a controller with the location of the seismic air gun source array.

13. The seismic survey system of claim 12 , wherein the positioning system is selected from a global positioning system, a satellite positioning system, an acoustic network, and a laser system.
