Abstract

Implementations of an apparatus and a method for surgical suturing are disclosed. An illustrative apparatus for tissue suturing includes a cartridge having a suturing needle having a pointed end and a second end, the suturing needle capable of rotating about an axis, a reciprocating needle drive, and an actuator capable of releasably engaging the needle drive to rotate the needle. A method for suturing tissue is provided that includes placing a suturing device having a cartridge containing a suturing needle to span at least one tissue segment, activating an actuator to cause rotational movement of the suturing needle through the at least one tissue segment, and deactivating the actuator to stop an advancing movement of the suturing needle to cause a suturing material to be pulled through the at least one tissue segment forming a stitch.

Claims (21)

1. A surgical suturing device including an arcuate suturing needle and an actuator handle with an actuating trigger attached to a reciprocating needle drive configured to advance the arcuate suturing needle along a circular needle track and across a gap in the needle track through tissue to be sutured, the arcuate suturing needle including:

a) an arcuate body with a pointed end and a second end, the arcuate body defining a central arcuate axis along the centerline of the arcuate body, the central arcuate axis defining a circular plane, the arcuate body having an upper arcuate face and a lower arcuate face, the upper arcuate face and lower arcuate face meeting at the circular plane;

b) a gap defined between the pointed end and the second end;

c) a first indentation defined in the needle located along the upper arcuate face of the arcuate body toward the pointed end, the first indentation being defined by at least one surface, the first indentation being configured to receive a drive pawl of the reciprocating needle drive; and

d) a second indentation defined in the needle located along the upper arcuate face of the arcuate body toward the second end of the needle, the second indentation being defined by at least one surface, the second indentation also being configured to receive the drive pawl of the reciprocating needle drive.

2. The surgical suturing device of claim 1 , wherein the arcuate suturing needle further includes a piece of suturing material, wherein an opening defined in the needle proximate the second end of the needle retains an end of the suturing material.

3. The surgical suturing device of claim 1 , wherein a first surface of the first indentation and a first surface of the second indentation both face toward the second end of the needle.

4. The surgical suturing device of claim 1 , further comprising a needle cartridge for holding the needle.

5. The surgical suturing device of claim 1 , wherein the needle is disposed in a removable cartridge that is removably attached to a cartridge holder assembly of the surgical suturing device.

6. The surgical suturing device of claim 5 , wherein the cartridge holder assembly is configured to releasably engage the cartridge and to bring the needle rotation drive into operational contact with the arcuate suturing needle.

7. The surgical suturing device of claim 6 , wherein suturing material is also disposed within the cartridge.

8. The surgical suturing device of claim 7 , wherein the cartridge further includes a suturing material dispenser containing the suturing material.

9. The surgical suturing device of claim 5 , wherein the cartridge further includes at least one mounting clip wherein the cartridge is releasably engaged with the cartridge holder assembly having the needle rotation drive.

10. The surgical suturing device of claim 1 wherein the needle covers an arc greater than about 280° and less than about 330°, and further wherein the needle further defines an aperture adjacent to the second end of the needle for engaging the suturing material.

11. The surgical suturing device of claim 1 , wherein the needle is disposed within a disposable portion of the suturing device.

12. The surgical suturing device of claim 11 , wherein the disposable portion of the suturing device includes a removable cartridge.

13. The suturing device of claim 1 , wherein a center of the circular needle track that coincides with the central arcuate axis is unobstructed by the needle drive.

14. The suturing device of claim 1 , wherein the device defines a window near a distal end of the device that facilitates viewing of the arcuate suturing needle as the arcuate suturing needle is advanced along the needle track.

15. The suturing device of claim 1 , wherein the reciprocating needle drive is electrically automated.

16. The suturing device of claim 1 , wherein the arcuate suturing needle further includes an outer indentation defined in a radially outer edge of the arcuate body.

17. The suturing device of claim 16 , wherein the outer indentation is disposed between the first indentation and the second indentation along a length of the arcuate body.
