Abstract

A waveguide assembly system includes a fixed port, a sliding port, and a transmission path from the fixed port to the sliding port. The transmission path includes a waveguide assembly that includes a first minor face corresponding to the fixed port, a first major face that includes a recess extending from the first minor surface towards the fixed port. The waveguide assembly system also includes a port assembly with a first major surface disposed opposite to the first major surface of the waveguide assembly. The port assembly includes at least one port having a first opening on the first major surface of the port assembly and a second opening on a second major surface of the port assembly. The port assembly includes one or more stubs positioned to impede electromagnetic energy propagation beyond a specified distance within the port tab assembly.

Claims (44)

1. A system comprising:

a waveguide assembly having a circular shape and comprising:

a first port, and

a face that is curved and includes a recess extending from the first port towards an end of the waveguide assembly;

a sliding port assembly having a circular shape, the sliding port assembly comprising:

a surface disposed opposite to the face of the waveguide assembly;

a first opening in the surface of the sliding port assembly, the first opening corresponding to a second port; and

a reactive element disposed within the sliding port assembly on the surface of the sliding port assembly at a distance from the first opening, the reactive element impeding electromagnetic energy propagation beyond the reactive element along the recess, wherein the reactive element is at a location that causes the reactive element to generate a waveform that is out of phase from a waveform corresponding to extremely high frequency (EHF) energy received via the first port, a transmission path formed between the first port and the second port via the recess.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the sliding port assembly further comprises:

a second opening in the surface of the sliding port assembly, the second opening corresponding to a third port.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the reactive element is disposed between the first opening and the second opening.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the sliding port assembly is reversible relative to the waveguide assembly, wherein when the sliding port assembly is reversed, the transmission path is formed between the first port and the third port instead of the first port and the second port.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the reactive element is a stub.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the stub has a rectangular shape.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein waveguide assembly has a semi-circular shape.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the sliding port assembly has a cylindrical shape, and the surface of the sliding port assembly is an outer surface of the cylindrical shape.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the waveguide assembly substantially surrounds the sliding port assembly.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein face of the waveguide assembly is concave, and the surface of the sliding port assembly is convex.

11. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a first extremely high frequency (EHF) communication unit positioned at the first port and including circuitry to transmit EHF energy via the first port; and

a second EHF communication unit including circuitry to receive the EHF energy via the second port.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the recess is comprised of a dielectric material.

13. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first transmission path is configured to propagate extremely high frequency (EHF) energy from the first port to the second port.

14. The system of claim 1 , wherein the sliding port assembly is rotatable relative to the waveguide assembly.

15. A system comprising:

a waveguide assembly comprising:

a first port, and

a face that includes a recess extending from the first port towards an end of the waveguide assembly; and

a reversible port assembly comprising:

a surface disposed opposite to the face of the waveguide assembly;

a first opening in the surface of the reversible port assembly, the first opening corresponding to a second port;

a second opening in the surface of the reversible port assembly, the second opening corresponding to a third port; and

a reactive element disposed within the reversible port assembly on the surface of the reversible port assembly and between the first opening and the second opening,

wherein when the reversible port assembly is in a first position, a transmission path is formed between the first port and the second port via the recess,

wherein when the reversible port assembly is in a second position reversed from the first position, a transmission path is formed between the first port and the third port via the recess,

wherein when the reversible port assembly is in the first position, the reactive element impedes electromagnetic energy from reaching the third port,

wherein when the reversible port assembly is in the second position, the reactive element impedes electromagnetic energy from reaching the second port, and

wherein the reactive element generates a waveform that is out of phase from a waveform corresponding to extremely high frequency (EHF) energy received via the first port.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the waveguide assembly has a circular shape, and the reversible port assembly has a circular shape.

17. The system of claim 15 , further comprising:

a first extremely high frequency (EHF) communication unit positioned at the first port and including circuitry to transmit EHF energy via the first port;

a second EHF communication unit including circuitry to receive the EHF energy via the second port when the reversible port assembly is in the first position; and

a third EHF communication unit including circuitry to at receive the EHF energy via the third port when the reversible port assembly is in the second position.

18. The system of claim 15 , wherein the reversible port assembly is a sliding port assembly.
