Abstract

A media processing device includes: a transport assembly to guide a media unit from a source past a processing head in an outbound direction, and past the processing head in a return direction toward an output; and a redirector to receive the media unit in the outbound direction, flip the media unit, and expel the media unit in the return direction. The redirector includes: a motor having an output shaft; a carriage rotatably supported by a housing; a roller supported by the carriage for engaging with the media unit; and a selector connected between the output shaft and the roller. The selector, for a first output shaft drive direction, rotates relative to the carriage and drives the roller for receiving or expelling the media unit, and for a second output shaft drive direction, engages the carriage and rotates the carriage relative to the housing for flipping the media unit.

Claims (44)

1 . A media processing device having a housing, the media processing device comprising:

a media unit transport assembly configured to guide a media unit (i) from an unprocessed media unit source to traverse a media processing head in an outbound direction, and (ii) to traverse the media processing head in a return direction toward a processed media unit output;

a media unit redirector configured to receive the media unit in the outbound direction, flip the media unit, and expel the media unit in the return direction, the media unit redirector including:

a motor having an output shaft;

a redirector carriage rotatably supported by the housing;

a roller rotatably supported by the redirector carriage, the roller to engage the media unit; and

a selector supported by the redirector carriage and connected between the output shaft and the roller the selector configured to:

responsive to a first output shaft drive direction, rotate relative to the redirector carriage and drive the roller to receive or expel the media unit; and

responsive to a second output shaft drive direction, engage the redirector carriage and rotate the redirector carriage relative to the housing to flip the media unit.

2 . The media processing device of claim 1 , the media unit redirector including a shaft rotatably supporting the redirector carriage within the housing the selector configured to rotate about the shaft responsive to the first output shaft drive direction, and to engage with the shaft responsive to the second output shaft drive direction.

3 . The media processing device of claim 2 , the selector including a drive wheel mounted on the shaft via a one-way clutch.

4 . The media processing device of claim 1 , wherein the roller is rotatably supported adjacent an input end of the redirector carriage to receive the media unit in the outbound direction.

5 . The media processing device of claim 4 , wherein the roller is a first roller, and further comprising a second roller rotatably supported at an output end of the redirector carriage to expel the media unit in the return direction.

6 . The media processing device of claim 5 , the selector configured to, responsive to the first output shaft drive direction, drive the first roller and the second roller simultaneously.

7 . The media processing device of claim 6 , the media unit redirector including:

a roller drive wheel fixed to the first roller;

a second roller drive wheel fixed to the second roller;

a drive wheel of the selector engaged with the roller drive wheel, the second roller drive wheel, and the output shaft.

8 . The media processing device of claim 1 , further comprising a controller configured to, responsive to detecting arrival of the media unit at the media unit redirector in the outbound direction, control the motor to drive the output shaft in the first output shaft drive direction.

9 . The media processing device of claim 8 , the controller configured to, responsive to detecting complete receipt of the media unit within the media unit redirector, control the motor to drive the output shaft in the second output shaft drive direction.

10 . The media processing device of claim 9 , the controller configured to, responsive to detecting rotation of the redirector carriage within the housing to an expelling position, control the motor to drive the output shaft in the first output shaft drive direction.

11 . The media processing device of claim 10 , the controller configured to, responsive to detecting complete expelling of the media unit from the media unit redirector, control the motor to drive the output shaft in the second output shaft drive direction.

12 . The media processing device of claim 1 , further comprising:

a first stop protruding from the housing toward the redirector carriage; and

a second stop protruding from the housing toward the redirector carriage, the redirector carriage including a flexible hook configured to:

deflect upon impact with the first and second stops during rotation of the redirector carriage by the selector responsive to the second output shaft drive direction; and

engage with the first and second stops to arrest rotation of the redirector carriage by the selector responsive to the first output shaft drive direction.

13 . A media processing device having a housing, the media processing device comprising:

a media unit transport assembly configured to guide a media unit (i) from an unprocessed media unit source to traverse a media processing head in an outbound direction, and (ii) to traverse the media processing head in a return direction toward a processed media unit output;

a media unit redirector configured to receive the media unit in the outbound direction, flip the media unit, and expel the media unit in the return direction, the media unit redirector including:

a motor having an output shaft;

a redirector carriage rotatably supported by the housing;

a roller rotatably supported by the redirector carriage to engage the media unit; and

a selector supported by the redirector carriage and connected between the output shaft and the roller, the selector configured to, responsive to each of a first and second output shaft drive direction:

engage the redirector carriage and rotate the redirector carriage relative to the housing until the redirector carriage abuts a stop on the housing; and

when the redirector carriage abuts the stop, rotate relative to the redirector carriage and drive the roller to receive or expel the media unit.

14 . The media processing device of claim 13 , the selector including a bevel gear movably supported by the carriage on a bidirectional friction clutch.

15 - 18 . (canceled)

19 . The media processing device of claim 1 , further comprising:

a registration assembly to align the media unit with the media processing path, the registration assembly including:

a registration surface substantially parallel with a direction of travel of the media unit along the media processing path;

a bias member connected between the housing and the registration surface to bias the registration surface toward the media processing path to apply a force to an edge of the media unit; and

an activator coupled to a drive roller of the media unit transport assembly, the activator configured to (i) move the registration surface toward the media processing path into an active position responsive to rotation of the roller in a first direction, and (ii) move the registration surface away from the media processing path into an inactive position responsive to rotation of the roller in a second direction.

20 . The media processing device of claim 19 , wherein the registration surface is located between the media processing head and the media unit redirector.
