Abstract

Apparatus, system and method for using a controlling device for receiving voice input to control the operation of voice controlled smart appliances and, more particularly, to a controlling device for recognizing voice commands and for use in routing a signal, based on voice commands from the user, to two or more voice controlled smart appliances from different consumer brand names.

Claims (9)

1. A method for providing formatted voice data to a one of a plurality of smart appliances, wherein each of the plurality of smart appliances is associated with a corresponding one of a plurality of speech processing services, comprising:

receiving, via a microphone of a controlling device, a voice command from a user;

in response to receiving the voice command, transmitting, via a communication interface of the controlling device, an HDMI input status request to a further smart appliance coupled to each of the plurality of smart appliances;

in response to the further smart appliance receiving the HDMI input status request, detecting by the further smart device an active HDMI input of the further smart device, the active HDMI input being indicated by a signal presently being presented by the first one of the plurality of smart appliances at a one of a plurality of HDMI inputs of the further smart device, to determine an appliance identification associated with the first one of the plurality of smart appliances that is associated with active HDMI input, and send, via the communication interface of the further smart appliance, the appliance identification of the first one of the plurality of smart appliances that is associated with the active HDMI input to the controlling device;

receiving, via the communication interface of the controlling device, the appliance identification of the first one of the plurality of smart appliances that is associated with the active HDMI input;

formatting, by the controlling device, the voice command in accordance with a formatting protocol stored in an electronic storage medium of the controlling device associated with the appliance identification of the first one of the plurality of smart appliances that is associated with the active HDMI input; and

transmitting, via the communication interface of the controlling device, the formatted voice command to the first one of the plurality of smart appliances for subsequent interpretation by the one of the plurality of speech processing services associated with the first one of the plurality of smart appliances.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining an appliance identification associated with the active HDMI input further comprises: requesting, by the further smart appliance, the appliance identification associated with the first one of the plurality of smart appliances connected to the active HDMI input; receiving, by the further smart appliance, the appliance identification from the first one of the plurality of smart appliances connected to the active HDMI input; and sending, via the communication interface associated with the further smart appliance, the appliance identification of the first one of the plurality of smart appliances connected to the active HDMI input to the controlling device.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining an appliance identification associated with the active HDMI input further comprises: sending, via a second communication interface of the smart appliance, information indicative of the active HDMI input to a remote server over a wide area network; receiving, via the second communication interface of the further smart appliance, a reply message having the appliance identification of the first one of the plurality of smart appliances connected to the active HDMI input; and sending, via the communication interface associated with the further smart appliance, the appliance identification of the first one of the plurality of smart appliances connected to the active HDMI input to the controlling device.
