Abstract

Techniques are disclosed for creating event sequences from event data and then providing a visual analysis of event sequences. An event sequencing application analyzes event-related data in order to group events in accordance with predetermined grouping criteria and to sort the events in a chronological order to generate the event sequences. The event sequencing application further provides calculated sequence-specific metrics and a visual representation of event sequences for an event set, thus allowing a user to sort, filter, query, and perform various other types of analysis over the event sequences.

Claims (61)

1. A computer-implemented method for a visual analysis of event sequences, the method comprising:

receiving, via a record management module, event-related data for a set of event sequences, the event-related data being received from one or more data sources;

grouping, via an event grouping module, event sequences within the set of event sequences based on predefined criteria;

sorting, via an event sequencing module, the event sequences in a chronological order based at least in part on a timestamp associated with each of the event sequences;

calculating, via a sequence analysis module, sequence metrics for the set of event sequences;

generating, via the sequence analysis module, a visual representation of the set of event sequences; and

displaying the visual representation of the set of event sequences and the sequence metrics for the set of event sequences on an application user interface, wherein the grouping further comprises:

determining, via the event grouping module, a probability of two or more events to occur in a same event sequence; and

if the probability exceeds a probability threshold, grouping the two or more events in the same event sequence.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising: receiving, via the application user interface, a filter selection for the set of event sequences;

generating a new representative sample subset of the set of event sequences based at least in part on the filter selection;

recalculating, via the sequence analysis module, sequence metrics for the new representative sample subset of the set of event sequences;

generating, via the sequence analysis module, a new visual representation of the new representative sample subset of the set of event sequences; and

displaying the new visual representation of the new representative sample subset of the set of event sequences on the application user interface.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising: receiving, via the application user interface, a selection to modify the visual representation of the set of event sequences;

generating, via the sequence analysis module, a new visual representation of the set of event sequences based at least in part on the selection; and

displaying the new visual representation of the set of event sequences on the application user interface.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the visual representation of the set of event sequences includes a single set of event sequences and one or more parallel subsequences of the single set of event sequences.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the sequence metrics comprise a duration of each of the event sequences, a number of events in the set of event sequences, and a time gap between consecutive event sequences.

6. One or more non-transitory computer-readable media storing computer-executable instructions that upon execution cause one or more processors to perform operations comprising:

receiving, via a record management module, event-related data for a set of event sequences, the event-related data being received from one or more data sources;

grouping, via an event grouping module, event sequences within the set of event sequences based on predefined criteria;

sorting, via an event sequencing module, the event sequences in a chronological order based at least in part on a timestamp associated with each of the event sequences;

calculating, via a sequence analysis module, sequence metrics for the set of event sequences;

generating, via the sequence analysis module, a visual representation of the set of event sequences; and

displaying the visual representation of the set of event sequences and the sequence metrics for the set of event sequences on an application user interface, wherein the grouping further comprises:

determining, via the event grouping module, a probability of two or more events to occur in a same event sequence; and

if the probability exceeds a probability threshold, grouping the two or more events in the same event sequence.

7. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 6 , further comprising:

receiving, via the application user interface, a filter selection for the set of event sequences;

generating a new representative sample subset of the set of event sequences based at least in part on the filter selection;

recalculating, via the sequence analysis module, sequence metrics for the new representative sample subset of the set of event sequences;

generating, via the sequence analysis module, a new visual representation of the new representative sample subset of the set of event sequences; and

displaying the new visual representation of the new representative sample subset of the set of event sequences on the application user interface.

8. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 6 , wherein the operations further comprise:

receiving, via the application user interface, a selection to modify the visual representation of the set of event sequences;

generating, via the sequence analysis module, a new visual representation of the set of event sequences based at least in part on the selection; and

displaying the new visual representation of the set of event sequences on the application user interface.

9. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 6 , wherein the visual representation of the set of event sequences includes a single set of event sequences and one or more parallel subsequences of the single set of event sequences.

10. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 6 , wherein the sequence metrics comprise a duration of each of the event sequences, a number of events in the set of event sequences, and a time gap between consecutive event sequences.

11. A system for a visual analysis of event sequences, comprising: one or more processors; and

a memory including a plurality of computer-executable components that are executable by the one or more processors to perform a plurality of operations, the plurality of operations comprising:

receiving, via a record management module, event-related data for a set of event sequences, the event-related data being received from one or more data sources;

grouping, via an event grouping module, event sequences within the set of event sequences based on predefined criteria;

sorting, via an event sequencing module, the event sequences in a chronological order based at least in part on a timestamp associated with each of the event sequences;

calculating, via a sequence analysis module, sequence metrics for the set of event sequences;

generating, via the sequence analysis module, a visual representation of the set of event sequences; and

displaying the visual representation of the set of event sequences and the sequence metrics for the set of event sequences on an application user interface, wherein the grouping further comprises:

determining, via the event grouping module, a probability of two or more events to occur in a same event sequence; and

if the probability exceeds a probability threshold, grouping the two or more events in the same event sequence.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of operations further comprises: receiving, via the application user interface, a filter selection for the set of event sequences;

generating a new representative sample subset of the set of event sequences based at least in part on the filter selection;

recalculating, via the sequence analysis module, sequence metrics for the new representative sample subset of the set of event sequences;

generating, via the sequence analysis module, a new visual representation of the new representative sample subset of the set of event sequences; and

displaying the new visual representation of the new representative sample subset of the set of event sequences on the application user interface.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of operations further comprises:

receiving, via the application user interface, a selection to modify the visual representation of the set of event sequences;

generating, via the sequence analysis module, a new visual representation of the set of event sequences based at least in part on the selection; and

displaying the new visual representation of the set of event sequences on the application user interface.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein the visual representation of the set of event sequences includes a single set of event sequences and one or more parallel subsequences of the single set of event sequences.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the sequence metrics comprise a duration of each of the event sequences, a number of events in the set of event sequences, and a time gap between consecutive event sequences.
