Abstract

Arthroplasty components include an articular surface and a bone-facing surface. In some examples, the bone-facing surface bears at least one anchoring element adapted for an oblique implantation trajectory. The anchoring element includes a reinforcement plate, a dowel, and surface features. Each surface feature resists forces acting along a different direction. In other examples, the bone-facing surface bears anchoring elements that deform along the primary or longest axis of the anchoring element during insertion. In yet other examples, the bone-facing surface is enlarged relative to the articular surface so that at least a portion of the perimeter of the articular surface is circumscribed by the perimeter of the bone-facing surface.

Claims (30)

1 . A glenoid arthroplasty prosthesis comprising:

a body comprising an articular surface and a bone-facing surface opposite the articular surface, wherein the articular surface comprises an articular peripheral edge, wherein the bone-facing surface comprises a bone-facing peripheral edge, wherein the bone-facing peripheral edge has a larger perimeter than the articular peripheral edge.

2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein in a lateral view of the body, a first portion of the bone-facing peripheral edge is outwardly offset from a first portion of the articular peripheral edge;

wherein the first portion of the bone-facing peripheral edge and the first portion of the articular peripheral edge are located on a first portion of the body, wherein the first portion of the body is selected from the group consisting of an anterior portion, a posterior portion, a superior portion, an inferior portion, an antero-superior portion, an antero-inferior portion, a postero-superior portion, and a postero-inferior portion.

3 . The system of claim 2 , wherein the first portion of the body is a posterior portion.

4 . The system of claim 3 , wherein in a lateral view of the body, a second portion of the bone-facing peripheral edge is outwardly offset from a second portion of the articular peripheral edge;

wherein the second portion of the bone-facing peripheral edge and the second portion of the articular peripheral edge are located on a second portion of the body, wherein the second portion of the body is selected from the group consisting of an anterior portion, a superior portion, an inferior portion, an antero-superior portion, an antero-inferior portion, a postero-superior portion, and a postero-inferior portion.

5 . The system of claim 4 , wherein in a lateral view of the body, the bone-facing peripheral edge is outwardly offset from the articular peripheral edge all around the articular peripheral edge.

6 . The system of claim 5 , wherein in a lateral view of the body, the bone-facing peripheral edge is outwardly offset from the articular peripheral edge by a constant increment all around the articular peripheral edge.

7 . The system of claim 1 , wherein a peripheral wall extends around the body between the articular surface and the bone-facing surface, wherein the peripheral wall tapers inwardly from the bone-facing peripheral edge to the articular peripheral edge.

The system of claim 1 , wherein a peripheral wall extends around the body between the articular surface and the bone-facing surface, wherein the peripheral wall steps inwardly from the bone-facing peripheral edge to the articular peripheral edge to form a flange at the bone-facing peripheral edge.

9 . A glenoid arthroplasty prosthesis comprising:

a body comprising an articular surface and a bone-facing surface opposite the articular surface, wherein the articular surface comprises an articular peripheral edge, wherein the bone-facing surface comprises a bone-facing peripheral edge;

wherein in a lateral view of the body, at least a first portion of the articular peripheral edge is circumscribed by a corresponding first portion of the bone-facing peripheral edge.

The system of claim 9 , wherein the first portion of the articular peripheral edge and the corresponding first portion of the bone-facing peripheral edge are located on a first portion of the body, wherein the first portion of the body is selected from the group consisting of an anterior portion, a posterior portion, a superior portion, an inferior portion, an antero-superior portion, an antero-inferior portion, a postero-superior portion, and a postero-inferior portion.

11 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the first portion of the body is a posterior portion.

12 . The system of claim 11 , wherein in a lateral view of the body, a second portion of the articular peripheral edge is circumscribed by a corresponding second portion of the bone-facing peripheral edge;

wherein the second portion of the articular peripheral edge and the corresponding second portion of the bone-facing peripheral edge are located on a second portion of the body, wherein the second portion of the body is selected from the group consisting of an anterior portion, a superior portion, an inferior portion, an antero-superior portion, an antero-inferior portion, a postero-superior portion, and a postero-inferior portion.

13 . The system of claim 12 , wherein in a lateral view of the body, the entire articular peripheral edge is circumscribed by the bone-facing peripheral edge.

14 . The system of claim 8 , wherein a peripheral wall extends around the body between the articular surface and the bone-facing surface, wherein the peripheral wall tapers inwardly from the bone-facing peripheral edge to the articular peripheral edge.

15 . The system of claim 8 , wherein a peripheral wall extends around the body between the articular surface and the bone-facing surface, wherein the peripheral wall steps inwardly from the bone-facing peripheral edge to the articular peripheral edge to form a flange at the bone-facing peripheral edge.

16 . A glenoid arthroplasty prosthesis comprising:

a body comprising an articular surface and a bone-facing surface opposite the articular surface, wherein the articular surface has a smaller area than the bone-facing surface;

wherein in a lateral view of the body, at least a first portion of the bone-facing surface extends outwardly past the articular surface along a first direction selected from the group consisting of an anterior direction, a posterior direction, a superior direction, an inferior direction, an antero-superior direction, an antero-inferior direction, a postero-superior direction, and a postero-inferior direction.

17 . The system of claim 16 , wherein the first direction is a posterior direction.

18 . The system of claim 17 , wherein in a lateral view of the body, at least a second portion of the bone-facing surface extends outwardly past the articular surface along a second direction selected from the group consisting of an anterior direction, a superior direction, an inferior direction, an antero-superior direction, an antero-inferior direction, a postero-superior direction, and a postero-inferior direction.

19 . The system of claim 18 , wherein in a lateral view of the body, the bone-facing surface extends outwardly past the articular surface all around the articular surface.

20 . A glenoid arthroplasty prosthesis comprising:

a body comprising an articular surface and a bone-facing surface opposite the articular surface, wherein the articular surface comprises an articular peripheral edge, wherein the articular surface has a surface normal vector at each point along the articular peripheral edge, wherein each surface normal vector forms an intersection with the bone-facing surface, wherein the bone-facing surface comprises a bone-facing peripheral edge;

wherein in a lateral view of the body, each point along the bone-facing peripheral edge is outwardly spaced apart from the corresponding intersection of the surface normal vector and the bone-facing surface.
