Abstract

Rapid failure detection and recovery in wireless communication networks is needed in order to meet, among other things, carrier class Ethernet transport channel standards. Thus, resilient wireless packet communications is provided using a hardware-assisted rapid transport channel failure detection algorithm and a Gigabit Ethernet data access card with an engine configured accordingly. In networks with various topologies, this is provided in combination with their existing protocols, such as rapid spanning tree and link aggregation protocols, respectively.

Claims (30)

1. A method comprising:

aggregating, by a physical layer protocol, a plurality of wireless network links, the plurality of wireless network links including a first wireless network link and one or more second wireless network links, the first wireless network link being used by a first data transmission device to communicate with a second data transmission device;

monitoring the first wireless network link, the monitoring occurring at a physical layer of the first data transmission device;

determining, at the physical layer of the first data transmission device, whether there is a failure condition with respect to the first wireless network link;

in response to the determining whether there is a failure condition, inserting information related to the failure condition into a header of one or more first wireless network packets sent from the first data transmission device over the first wireless network link to the second data transmission device, the information related to the failure condition including a receive status indicating a receive status of the first data transmission device of one or more second wireless network packets sent from the second data transmission device; and

when the header of the one or more first wireless network packets sent from the first data transmission device over the first wireless network link to the second data transmission device indicates a receive failure by the first data transmission device, shifting the second data transmission device from the first wireless network link to the one or more second wireless network links.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the determining whether there is a failure condition comprises determining whether there is a traffic alignment error related to payload traffic.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the determining whether there is a failure condition comprises determining whether there is a packet received timeout related to payload traffic.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the determining whether there is a failure condition comprises determining whether a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) threshold related to payload traffic has been met or exceeded.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first data transmission device is one of a plurality of wireless network nodes in a wireless network ring.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first data transmission device is one of a plurality of data transmission devices, and the method further comprises performing a recovery operation related to the plurality of data transmission devices.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein performing the recovery operation comprises performing link aggregation on the plurality of data transmission devices.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein performing the link aggregation comprises distributing a dynamic link aggregation key to the plurality of data transmission devices.

9. The method of claim 6 , wherein performing the recovery operation comprises performing a resilient wireless packet ring recovery on the plurality of data transmission devices.

10. A first data transmission device comprising:

a network interface configured to receive data from a wireless network; and

circuitry configured to perform a method, the method comprising:

aggregating, by a physical layer protocol, a plurality of wireless network links, the plurality of wireless network links including a first wireless network link and one or more second wireless network links, the first wireless network link being used by the first data transmission device to communicate with a second data transmission device;

monitoring the first wireless network link, the monitoring occurring at a physical layer of the first data transmission device;

determining, at the physical layer of the first data transmission device, whether there is a failure condition with respect to the first wireless network link; and

in response to the determining whether there is a failure condition, inserting information related to the failure condition into a header of one or more first wireless network packets sent from the first data transmission device over the first wireless network link to the second data transmission device, the information related to the failure condition including a receive status indicating a receive status of the first data transmission device of one or more second wireless network packets sent from the second data transmission device;

wherein, when the header of the one or more first wireless network packets sent from the first data transmission device over the first wireless network link to the second data transmission device indicates a receive failure by the first data transmission device, the second data transmission device shifts from the first wireless network link to the one or more second wireless network links.

11. The first data transmission device of claim 10 , wherein the determining whether there is a failure condition comprises determining whether there is a traffic alignment error related to payload traffic.

12. The first data transmission device of claim 10 , wherein the determining whether there is a failure condition comprises determining whether there is a packet received timeout related to payload traffic.

13. The first data transmission device of claim 10 , wherein the determining whether there is a failure condition comprises determining whether a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) threshold related to payload traffic has been met or exceeded.

14. The first data transmission device of claim 10 , wherein the first data transmission device is one of a plurality of data transmission devices in a wireless network ring.

15. The first data transmission device of claim 10 , wherein the first data transmission device is one of a plurality of data transmission devices, and the method further comprises performing a recovery operation related to the plurality of data transmission devices.

16. The first data transmission device of claim 15 , wherein performing the recovery operation comprises performing link aggregation on the plurality of data transmission devices.

17. The first data transmission device of claim 16 , wherein performing the link aggregation comprises distributing a dynamic link aggregation key to the plurality of data transmission devices.

18. The first data transmission device of claim 15 , wherein performing the recovery operation comprises performing a resilient wireless packet ring recovery on the plurality of data transmission devices.
