Abstract

Enhanced confirmations for programming of touchscreen infusion pumps reduce the likelihood of users confirming pump parameters that have been mistakenly programmed. Following programming of a given pump parameter, an icon or image intuitively related to the pump parameter can be displayed on the touchscreen. To confirm programming of the parameter, the user can be required to trace the icon on the touchscreen. The user will therefore necessarily associate the confirmation step with the parameter being programmed and be far more likely to realize if a mistake has been made because the user was intending to program a different parameter than with simple confirmations involving the press of a confirmation button.

Claims (42)

1. A method of delivering a medicament to a user with a portable infusion pump, comprising:

displaying a bolus setup page on a touch-screen display of a portable infusion pump system;

receiving a user entry of a value for a pump parameter for calculation of a bolus of medicament to be delivered to the user via the bolus setup page;

displaying a confirmation screen on the touch-screen display requiring a confirmation of the user entry, including displaying a pictorial confirmation icon representing the pump parameter;

receiving a confirmation of the user entry of the pump parameter through the touch-screen, the confirmation comprising the user tracing an outline of the pictorial confirmation icon; and

causing the portable infusion pump to deliver the bolus of the medicament to the user only after receiving the confirmation of the user entry of the pump parameter comprising the user tracing the outline of the pictorial confirmation icon.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising displaying a text confirmation of the value and the pump parameter adjacent to the pictorial confirmation icon on the confirmation screen.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising displaying instructions to the user on the confirmation screen instructing the user to trace the pictorial confirmation icon to provide the confirmation.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the pump parameter is an amount of carbohydrates.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the pictorial icon is a food item.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the pump parameter is a blood glucose level.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the pump parameter is an amount of the medicament.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving a second user entry of a value for a second pump parameter for calculation of the bolus of the medicament to be delivered to the user via the bolus setup page;

displaying a second confirmation screen on the touch-screen display requiring a confirmation of the second user entry as a second confirmation, including displaying a second pictorial confirmation icon representing the second pump parameter; and

identifying a user interaction with the touch-screen display as the user providing the second confirmation by tracing an outline of the second pictorial confirmation icon,

wherein the step of causing the portable infusion pump to deliver the bolus of the medicament to the user only after receiving the confirmation of the user entry by the user tracing the outline of the pictorial confirmation icon includes only causing the portable infusion pump to deliver the bolus after identifying both the confirmation of the user entry and the second confirmation of the second user entry.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the second pictorial confirmation icon representing the second pump parameter is different from the pictorial confirmation icon representing the pump parameter.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

calculating a bolus amount for the bolus based on the value of the pump parameter;

displaying a bolus amount confirmation screen on the touch-screen display requiring a bolus confirmation of the bolus amount, including displaying a pictorial confirmation icon representing the bolus; and

identifying a user interaction with the touch-screen display as the user providing the bolus confirmation by tracing an outline of the pictorial confirmation icon representing the bolus,

wherein the step of causing the portable infusion pump to deliver the bolus of the medicament to the user only after receiving the confirmation of the user entry by the user tracing the outline of the pictorial confirmation icon includes only causing the portable infusion pump to deliver the bolus after identifying both the confirmation of the user entry and the bolus confirmation of the bolus amount.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the touch-screen display of the portable infusion pump system is a touch-screen display of the portable infusion pump.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the touch-screen display of the portable infusion pump system is a touch-screen display of a remote control device configured to control the portable infusion pump.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the remote control device is a smartphone.

14. A method of delivering a medicament to a user with a portable infusion pump, comprising:

displaying a user interface on a touch-screen display of a portable infusion pump system;

receiving a user input via the touch-screen display programming an operation to be carried out by the portable infusion pump system;

displaying the confirmation screen on the touch-screen display requiring a confirmation of the operation, including displaying a pictorial confirmation icon relating to the operation;

receiving a confirmation of the operation through the touch-screen display, the confirmation is received through the user tracing an outline of the pictorial confirmation icon; and

causing the portable infusion pump to carry out the operation only after receiving the confirmation received through the user tracing the outline of the pictorial confirmation icon.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising displaying a text confirmation of the operation adjacent to the pictorial confirmation icon on the confirmation screen.

16. The method of claim 14 , further comprising displaying instructions to the user on the confirmation screen instructing the user to trace the pictorial confirmation icon to provide the confirmation.

17. The method of claim 14 , wherein the operation to be carried out by the portable infusion pump system is delivery of a bolus of the medicament.

18. The method of claim 14 , wherein the operation to be carried out by the portable infusion pump system is delivery of a basal rate of the medicament.

19. The method of claim 14 , wherein the operation to be carried out by the portable infusion pump system is setting of operational limits for the portable infusion pump.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the operational limits include a maximum bolus amount.

21. The method of claim 19 , wherein the operational limits include one or more alerts or reminders provided by the portable infusion pump system.

22. The method of claim 14 , wherein the touch-screen display of the portable infusion pump system is a touch-screen display of the portable infusion pump.

23. The method of claim 14 , wherein the touch-screen display of the portable infusion pump system is a touch-screen display of a remote control device configured to control the portable infusion pump.

24. The method of claim 23 , wherein the remote control device is a smartphone.
