Abstract

A system is disclosed for use in additively manufacturing a structure. The system may include an additive manufacturing machine, a memory having computer-executable instructions stored thereon, and a processor. The processor may be configured to execute the computer-executable instructions to determine if a tool path to be followed by the additive manufacturing machine during manufacture of the structure is located in free-space or on top of another tool path. When the tool path is located in free-space, the processor may be further configured to execute the computer-executable instructions to make a determination regarding a curvature of the tool path, and to selectively cause the additive manufacturing machine to fabricate a support for the tool path based on the determination.

Claims (27)

1. A system for additively manufacturing a structure, comprising: an additive manufacturing machine configured to discharge a continuous reinforcement wetted with a matrix and including at least one cure enhancer configured to expose the matrix to a cure energy at discharge that causes the matrix to harden; a memory having computer-executable instructions stored thereon; and

a processor configured to execute the computer-executable instructions to:

cause the continuous reinforcement to be discharged from the additive manufacturing under tension along a curved tool path in free space;

cause the at least one cure enhancer to harden the matrix during discharge and retain the tension within the continuous reinforcement; and

selectively cause the additive manufacturing machine to fabricate a support for the continuous reinforcement only when the discharging under tension will cause the curved tool path to deviate from a desired location.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to execute the computer-executable instructions to cause the additive manufacturing machine to fabricate the support using only a matrix.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to execute the computer-executable instructions to determine that the discharging under tension will cause the curved tool path to deviate from a desired location when a curvature of the tool path has a radius less than a threshold radius.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to execute the computer-executable instructions to:

determine if compaction is specified for the tool path; and

cause the additive manufacturing machine to fabricate the support for the tool path only when compaction is specified.

5. A method of fabricating a structure with an additive manufacturing machine, the method comprising:

discharging a continuous reinforcement wetted with a matrix under tension along a curved tool path in free space;

exposing the matrix to a cure energy at discharge that causes the matrix to harden;

selectively causing the additive manufacturing machine to fabricate a support for the continuous reinforcement only when the discharging under tension will cause the curved tool path to deviate from a desired location.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein selectively causing the additive manufacturing machine to fabricate the support includes causing the additive manufacturing machine to fabricate the support using only a matrix.

7. The method of claim 5 , further including determining that the discharging under tension will cause the curved tool path to deviate from a desired location when a curvature of the tool path has a radius less than a threshold radius.

8. The method of claim 5 , further including determining if compaction is specified for the tool path; and

selectively causing the additive manufacturing machine to fabricate the support includes causing the additive manufacturing machine to fabricate the support only when compaction is specified.

9. A non-transitory computer readable medium containing computer-executable programming instructions for performing a method of additively manufacturing a structure, the method comprising:

discharging a continuous reinforcement wetted with a matrix under tension along a curved tool path in free space;

exposing the matrix to a cure energy at discharge that causes the matrix to harden;

selectively causing the additive manufacturing machine to fabricate a support for the continuous reinforcement only when the discharging under tension will cause the curved tool path to deviate from a desired location.

10. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 9 , wherein the method further includes wherein selectively causing the additive manufacturing machine to fabricate the support includes causing the additive manufacturing machine to fabricate the support using only a matrix.

11. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 9 , determining that discharging under tension will cause the curved tool path to deviate from a desired location when a curvature of the tool path has a radius less than a threshold radius.

12. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 9 , wherein:

further including determining if compaction is specified for the tool path; and

selectively causing the additive manufacturing machine to fabricate the support includes causing the additive manufacturing machine to fabricate the support only when compaction is specified.
