Abstract

Optical communication systems and methods using coherently combined optical beams are disclosed. A representative system includes a first mirror having a first actuator for adjusting a position of the first mirror in a path of a first optical beam and a first optical detector for receiving light reflected from the first mirror. The system also includes a second mirror having a second actuator for adjusting a position of the second mirror in a path of a second optical beam and a second optical detector for receiving light reflected from the second mirror. The system includes an interferometer for measuring an interference between the first and second optical beams and a third optical detector for receiving light from the second interfered optical beam. Intensity of the first interfered optical beam is increased by the interference, and intensity of the second interfered optical beam is decreased by the interference.

Claims (29)

1. An optical communication system for coherently combining optical beams, comprising:

a first mirror having a first actuator for adjusting a position of the first mirror in a path of a first optical beam;

a first optical detector for receiving light reflected from the first mirror;

a second mirror having a second actuator for adjusting a position of the second mirror in a path of a second optical beam;

a second optical detector for receiving light reflected from the second mirror;

a lens for combining light from the first optical beam and the second optical beam that is reflected from the first mirror and the second mirror;

a pixelated detector for receiving, from the lens, at least some of the combined light from the first optical beam and the second optical beam; and

a controller for adjusting positions of the first mirror and the second mirror, using the first actuator and the second actuator, based at least in part on signals from the first optical detector, the second optical detector, and the pixelated detector to increase an intensity of the combined light.

2. The optical system of claim 1 wherein at least some of the combined light from the first optical beam and the second optical beam is received at an optical fiber.

3. The optical system of claim 1 wherein the controller adjusts the position of the first mirror in a first tilt direction and a first tip direction, and adjusts the position of the second mirror in a second tilt direction, a second tip direction, and a piston direction.

4. The optical system of claim 1 wherein the lens is a first lens, the system further comprising a second lens for directing the light into the optical fiber.

5. The optical system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a first beamsplitter for directing some light of the first optical beam to the first optical detector and some light of the second optical beam to the second optical detector; and

a second beamsplitter for directing some light from the lens to the pixelated detector.

6. The optical system of claim 1 wherein the pixelated detector has a resolution of 4×4 pixels.

7. The optical system of claim 1 wherein the first and second optical detectors are position-sensitive detectors.

8. The optical system of claim 7 wherein the position-sensitive detectors are quad detectors.

9. A method for coherently combining optical beams, comprising:

reflecting a first optical beam using a first mirror;

reflecting a second optical beam using a second mirror;

directing the reflected first optical beam at least in part to a first optical detector using a first beamsplitter;

directing the reflected second optical beam at least in part to a second optical detector using the first beamsplitter;

combining light from the reflected first optical beam and the reflected second optical beam using a lens;

directing light from the lens at least in part to a pixelated detector using a second beamsplitter; and

adjusting positions of the first mirror and the second mirror based at least in part on signals received from the first optical detector, the second optical detector, and the pixelated detector to increase an intensity of the combined light.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein the first and second optical detectors are position-sensitive detectors.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein the position-sensitive detectors are quad detectors.

12. The method of claim 9 wherein the position of the first mirror is adjustable in a first tip direction and a first tilt direction, and the position of the second mirror is adjustable in a second tip direction, a second tilt direction, and a piston direction.

13. The method of claim 9 wherein at least some of the light from the lens is received at an optical fiber.
