Abstract

The disclosure provides methods for the use of gene expression measurements to classify or identify neuroendocrine cancer in samples obtained from a subject in a clinical setting, such as in cases of formalin fixed, paraffin embedded (FFPE) samples.

Claims (14)

1. A method for treating a pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor in a subject, the method comprising

determining mRNA expression levels of four sequences consisting of ELAVL4, CADPS, RGS17 and KCNJ11 in a sample obtained from the subject;

comparing the ELAVL4, CADPS, RGS17 and KCNJ11 expression levels to expression levels of ELAVL4, CADPS, RGS17 and KCNJ11 in a known reference specimen, wherein the known reference specimen is a known pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor;

classifying the sample as containing pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor cells based on detecting ELAVL4, CADPS, RGS17 and KCNJ11 expression levels that are positively correlated to the expression levels of ELAVL4, CADPS, RGS17 and KCNJ11 in the known reference specimen; and

administering a tyrosine kinase inhibitor or mTOR inhibitor to the subject after the sample has been classified as containing pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor cells.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the determining comprises detection of cDNA copies of the mRNA.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the determining comprises amplifying the cDNA copies.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the detection comprises sequencing the cDNA copies.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the determining comprises labeling the mRNA.

6. The method of claim 3 , wherein the amplifying comprises amplification of all or part of the sequences, or reverse transcription and labeling mRNA corresponding to the sequences.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the amplification comprises linear RNA amplification or quantitative PCR.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein the amplification is quantitative PCR amplification of at least 50 nucleotides of the sequences.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the sample is a formalin fixed, paraffin embedded (FFPE) sample.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the sample is from lymph nodes of the subject.
