Anti-microbial compositions for cleaning and sanitizing skin are disclosed. The anti-microbial compositions preferably comprises at least one quaternary ammonium chloride active and results in low irritation cleansing and sanitizing products that allow more frequent application.

Claims (28)

1. A skin soap or skin sanitizer anti-microbial cleansing composition comprising skin contact compatible components including:

a) a quaternary ammonium chloride comprising at least one benzalkonium chloride and/or at least one benzethonium chloride in an amount of from about 0.05% to about 0.75% by weight;

b) at least one non-quaternary amphoteric surfactant;

c) at least one humectant chosen from sodium salts of pyroglutamic acids (PCAs), glycerins, propylene glycols, butylene glycols, betaines, sodium hyaluronates, sorbitols, ureas, and hydroxyethyl ureas; and

d) at least one moisturizer, different from the at least one humectant, chosen from collagens; lecithins; liposomes; peptides; polysaccharides; glycerins; sorbitols; propylene glycols; calcium pantothenates; ureas; caprylyl glycols; butylene glycols; glucoses; magnesium lactates; potassium chlorides; potassium lactates; ethylhexylglycerins; dipropylene glycols; silicones; fatty acids; fatty alcohols; hydrocarbon oils and waxes; petrolatums; polyhydric alcohols; sterols; vegetable and animal fats; hyaluronic acids, ceramics; caprylic/capric triglycerides; magnesium aspartames; potassium aspartames; and sarcosines;

wherein all components in the cleansing composition and their respective concentrations are suitable for application to the skin of a user; and

wherein the composition has a pH of at least 10.5.

2. The anti-microbial composition of claim 1 , wherein the quaternary ammonium chloride is chosen from one or more benzalkonium chloride compositions.

3. The anti-microbial composition of claim 2 , wherein the benzalkonium composition has at 85% C 12 and C 14 compounds.

4. The anti-microbial composition of claim 1 , wherein the level of non-active organics is below 8%.

5. The anti-microbial composition of claim 1 , wherein the pH is at least about 11.

6. The anti-microbial composition of claim 1 , further comprising a potentiator.

7. The anti-microbial cleansing composition of claim 1 , wherein the pH of the composition is from about 10.5 to about 13.

8. The anti-microbial composition of claim 1 , wherein the level of non-active organics is below about 4%.

9. The anti-microbial composition of claim 1 , wherein the level of non-active organics is below about 2%.

10. The anti-microbial composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition is dye free, fragrance free, or dye and fragrance free.

11. The anti-microbial composition of claim 1 , wherein the non-biocidal organics are present in the composition in an amount of between 0.5% and 4%.

12. The anti-microbial composition of claim 1 , further comprising a chelating agent.

13. The anti-microbial composition of claim 1 , further comprising one or more ethylenediaminetetraacetic acids.

14. The anti-microbial composition of claim 1 , further comprising one or more preservatives.

15. The anti-microbial composition of claim 1 , wherein the quaternary ammonium chloride is chosen from one or more benzalkonium chloride compositions having at least about 0.1% C 6 -C 8 side chains.

16. The anti-microbial composition of claim 1 , wherein the quaternary ammonium chloride is present in an amount of from about 0.1% to about 0.6%, by weight.

17. The anti-microbial composition of claim 1 , wherein the quaternary ammonium chloride is present in an amount of from about 0.1% to about 0.3%, by weight.

18. The anti-microbial composition of claim 1 , wherein the amphoteric surfactant is present in an amount of from about 0.01% to about 0.03%, by weight.

19. The anti-microbial composition of claim 1 , wherein the moisturizer is chosen from one or more silicones chosen from dimethicone and cyclomethicone; one or more fatty acids chosen from lanolin acid; one or more fatty alcohols chosen from lanolin alcohol; one or more sterols chosen from cholesterols; or one or more vegetable or animal fats, chosen from cocoa butter, vegetable waxes, carnauba wax, wax esters, or bees wax.

20. A method of using the skin soap or skin sanitizer anti-microbial cleansing composition of claim 1 , comprising;

applying the cleansing composition to the skin of a user; and

optionally, rinsing the composition from the skin with water.
