Liquid laser-induced pressure wave emitting catheter sheath
The present disclosure relates generally to the use of medical devices for the treatment of vascular conditions. In particular, the present disclosure provides devices and methods for using laser-induced pressure waves created within a sheath to disrupt intimal and medial calcium within the vasculature.
1. A catheter system comprising:
a liquid light guide catheter comprising a proximal end, a distal end, and at least one emitter disposed adjacent the distal end, wherein the emitter is configured to produce a laser-induced pressure wave; and
a sheath configured to be disposed over the liquid light guide catheter and configured to receive a liquid medium, the sheath comprising a proximal end, a distal end, and an attenuating member disposed at or adjacent the distal end of the sheath, wherein the attenuating member comprises a braided structure having a braid density that includes gaps producing an open area in the braided structure, wherein the open area comprises at least thirty percent of the braided structure to thereby permit at least a portion of the laser-induced pressure wave to pass through the gaps in the braided structure.
2. The catheter system of claim 1 , wherein the open area of the braided structure has an area between 55 percent and 75 percent of the total area of the braided structure.
3. The catheter system of claim 1 , wherein the braided structure has between 12 and 20 carriers.
4. The catheter system of claim 3 , wherein the sheath further comprises: an inner liner; an outer jacket; and an intermediate layer disposed concentrically between the inner liner and the outer jacket.
5. The catheter system of claim 4 , wherein the braided structure is integrally disposed within the inner liner or the outer jacket.
6. The catheter system of claim 5 , wherein the braided structure is integrally disposed within the inner liner.
7. The catheter system of claim 6 , wherein the braided structure is integrally disposed within the outer jacket.
8. The catheter system of claim 7 , wherein the braided structure is integrally disposed within the outer jacket and the inner liner.
9. The catheter system of claim 1 , wherein the braided structure is an integrally disposed portion of the sheath.
10. The catheter system of claim 9 , wherein the braided structure extends only through the distal end of the sheath.
11. The catheter system of claim 1 wherein the braided structure extends only through the distal end of the sheath.
12. The catheter system of claim 1 wherein the braided structure has a braid density between 40 and 80 picks per inch.
13. The catheter system of claim 1 wherein the open area represents between forty and sixty percent of the area of the braided structure.
