Abstract

Exemplary embodiments are directed to biometric analysis systems generally including one or more illumination sources, a camera, and an analysis module. The illumination sources are configured to illuminate at least a portion of a face of a subject. The camera is configured to capture one or more images of the subject during illumination of the face of the subject. The analysis module is configured to analyze the one or more images captured by the camera to determine an indication of liveliness of the subject and prevent spoofing.

Claims (35)

1. A biometric analysis system, comprising:

one or more illumination sources configured to illuminate an iris of a subject at a first angle to avoid a retinal reflection of the subject and at a second angle to produce the retinal reflection of the subject;

one or more cameras configured to capture one or more images of the subject during illumination of the subject with the one or more illumination sources at the first angle and capture one or more images of the subject during illumination of the subject with the one or more illumination sources at the second angle; and

an analysis module configured to receive as input the one or more images captured at the first angle and the one or more images captured at the second angle, analyze the one or more images captured at the first angle to detect an absence of retinal reflection, analyze the one or more images captured at the second angle to detect retinal reflection, and determine a liveness of the subject based on the detected absence of retinal reflection and the detected retinal reflection.

2. The biometric analysis system of claim 1 , wherein the detected absence of retinal reflection in the one or more images captured at the second angle is contraindicative of a live subject and indicative of a facsimile image.

3. The biometric analysis system of claim 1 , wherein each of the one or more cameras comprises a lens and the illumination source is disposed at a position adjacent to the lens to produce the retinal reflection of the subject.

4. The biometric analysis system of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the one or more illumination sources emits an infrared light to produce the retinal reflection in an infrared spectrum.

5. The biometric analysis system of claim 1 , wherein each of the one or more illumination sources is configured to illuminate the iris of the subject with a continuous emitted light.

6. The biometric analysis system of claim 1 , wherein the first angle is an angle formed by the one or more illumination sources, the iris of the subject, and the one or more cameras above 5 degrees.

7. The biometric analysis system of claim 1 , wherein the second angle is an angle formed by the one or more illumination sources, the iris of the subject, and the one or more cameras below 5 degrees.

8. The biometric analysis system of claim 1 , wherein each of the one or more illumination sources is configured to illuminate the iris of the subject with a flashing emitted light.

9. The biometric analysis system of claim 8 , wherein each of the one or more illumination sources is configured to vary an interval of time between flashes of the flashing emitted light.

10. The biometric analysis system of claim 8 , wherein each of the one or more illumination sources is configured to vary a number of flashes of the flashing emitted light for each subject.

11. A method of biometric analysis, comprising:

illuminating an iris of a subject with one or more illumination sources of a biometric analysis system at a first angle to avoid a retinal reflection of the subject and at a second angle to produce the retinal reflection of the subject;

capturing one or more images of the subject with one or more cameras of the biometric analysis system during illumination of the subject with the one or more illumination sources at the first angle and capturing one or more images of the subject with the camera during illumination of the subject with the one or more illumination sources at the second angle;

receiving as input at an analysis module of the biometric analysis system the one or more images captured at the first angle and the one or more images captured at the second angle;

analyzing the one or more images captured at the first angle to detect an absence of retinal reflection;

analyzing the one or more images captured at the second angle to detect retinal reflection; and

determining with the analysis module of the biometric analysis system a liveness of the subject based on the detected absence of retinal reflection and the detected retinal reflection.

12. The method of claim 11 , comprising determining that the detected absence of retinal reflection in the one or more images captured at the second angle is contraindicative of a live subject and indicative of a facsimile image.

13. The method of claim 11 , comprising emitting an infrared light with the at least one or more illumination sources to produce the retinal reflection in an infrared spectrum.

14. The method of claim 11 , comprising illuminating the iris of the subject with a continuous light emitted from the one or more illumination sources.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein the each of the one or more cameras comprises a lens and at least one of the one or more illumination sources is disposed at a position adjacent to the lens to produce the retinal reflection of the subject.

The method of claim 11 , wherein the first angle is an angle formed by the one or more illumination sources, the iris of the subject, and the one or more cameras above 5 degrees, and the second angle is an angle formed by the one or more illumination sources, the iris of the subject, and the one or more cameras below 5 degrees.

17. The method of claim 11 , comprising illuminating the iris of the subject with a flashing light emitted from the one or more illumination sources.

18. The method of claim 17 , comprising varying an interval of time between flashes of the flashing light emitted from the one or more illumination sources.

19. The method of claim 17 , comprising varying a number of flashes of the flashing light emitted from the one or more illumination sources for each subject.

20. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions for biometric analysis that are executable by a processing device, wherein execution of the instructions by the processing device causes the processing device to:

illuminate an iris of a subject with one or more illumination sources of a biometric analysis system at a first angle to avoid a retinal reflection of the subject and at a second angle to produce the retinal reflection of the subject;

capture one or more images of the subject with one or more cameras of the biometric analysis system during illumination of the subject with the one or more illumination sources at the first angle and capturing one or more images of the subject with the camera during illumination of the subject with the one or more illumination sources at the second angle;

receive as input at an analysis module of the biometric analysis system the one or lore images captured at the first angle and the one or more images captured at the second angle;

analyze the one or more images captured at the first angle to detect an absence of retinal reflection;

analyze the one or more images captured at the second angle to detect retinal reflection; and

determine with the analysis module of the biometric analysis system a liveness of the subject based on the detected absence of retinal reflection and the detected retinal reflection.
