Abstract

A stapling assembly for use with a stapling system comprises a mounting portion and an elongate shaft. The stapling assembly further comprises a cartridge body and a firing member. The stapling assembly further comprises a motor drive and a power input configured to supply power to the motor drive. The stapling assembly further comprises a first powered state prior to the staple firing stroke and a second powered state in which the power input supplies power to the motor drive to perform the staple firing stroke.

Claims (39)

1. A stapling attachment for use with a remotely controllable system, wherein said stapling attachment comprises:

a mounting portion;

an elongate shaft extending from said mounting portion;

an end effector including a staple cartridge assembly;

a firing member movable within said staple cartridge assembly during a staple firing stroke;

a motor-driven drive system configured to move said firing member through said staple firing stroke;

a power source configured to selectively supply power to said motor-driven drive system, wherein said stapling attachment is inoperable to perform said staple firing stroke until said stapling attachment is operably attached to the remotely controllable system;

a first powered state prior to said staple firing stroke in which said power source supplies power to said stapling attachment, wherein said stapling attachment cannot perform said staple firing stroke during said first powered state; and

a second powered state in which said power source supplies power to said motor-driven drive system to perform said staple firing stroke.

2. A stapling attachment for use with a remotely controllable system, wherein said stapling attachment comprises:

a mounting portion;

an elongate shaft extending from said mounting portion;

an end effector;

a firing member movable relative to said end effector during a staple firing stroke;

an electrically-powered drive system, wherein said drive system is configured to move said firing member through said staple firing stroke;

a power source configured to selectively supply power to said drive system, wherein said stapling attachment is unable to perform said staple firing stroke unless said stapling attachment is operably attached to the remotely controllable system;

a first powered state prior to said staple firing stroke in which said power source supplies power to said stapling attachment, wherein said stapling attachment cannot perform said staple firing stroke during said first powered state; and

a second powered state in which said power source supplies power to said drive system to perform said staple firing stroke.

3. The stapling attachment of claim 2 , wherein said end effector further comprises a staple cartridge.

4. A surgical stapling system, comprising

a user-controlled actuator system;

a mounting portion releasably attachable to said user-controlled actuator system;

an elongate shaft extending from said mounting portion;

an end effector;

a tissue cutting member movable relative to said end effector during a tissue cutting stroke;

a drive system comprising an electric motor, wherein said drive system is configured to move said tissue cutting member through said tissue cutting stroke;

a power system adaptable to supply power to said drive system, wherein said surgical stapling system is unable to perform said tissue cutting stroke unless said mounting portion is operably attached to said user-controlled actuator system;

a powered state in which said power system cannot supply power to said drive system to perform said tissue cutting stroke; and

a powered operating state in which said power system supplies power to said drive system to perform said tissue cutting stroke.

5. The surgical stapling system of claim 4 , wherein said end effector further comprises a staple cartridge.

6. A stapling assembly for use with a stapling system, wherein said stapling assembly comprises:

a mounting portion;

an elongate shaft extending from said mounting portion;

a cartridge body comprising staples removably stored therein;

a firing member movable relative to said cartridge body during a staple firing stroke;

a motor drive configured to move said firing member through said staple firing stroke;

a power input configured to supply power to said motor drive, wherein said stapling assembly is inoperable to perform said staple firing stroke until said stapling assembly is operably attached to the stapling system;

a first powered state prior to said staple firing stroke in which said power input supplies power to said stapling assembly, wherein said stapling assembly cannot perform said staple firing stroke during said first powered state; and

a second powered state in which said power input supplies power to said motor drive to perform said staple firing stroke.
