Abstract

A vaso-occlusive device delivery assembly includes a pusher assembly having proximal and distal ends, a conductive sacrificial link disposed at the distal end of the pusher assembly, and a vaso-occlusive device secured to the pusher assembly by the sacrificial link. The pusher assembly includes first and second conductors extending between the proximal and distal ends thereof. The sacrificial link is electrically coupled between the first and second conductors, such that the first conductor, sacrificial link and second conductor form an electrical circuit, and, when a disintegration current is applied through the sacrificial link through the first and second conductors, the sacrificial link thermally disintegrates, thereby releasing the attachment member and vaso-occlusive device from the pusher assembly.

Claims (48)

1. A vaso-occlusive device delivery assembly, comprising:

a pusher assembly having proximal and distal ends, the pusher assembly comprising:

a pusher conduit having a lumen;

a proximal seal affixed within the lumen of the pusher conduit;

a stretch-resisting member;

first and second conductors extending between the proximal and distal ends of the pusher assembly;

a thermally-degradable conductive sacrificial link disposed at the distal end of the pusher assembly and electrically coupled between the respective first and second conductors, such that the first conductor, the sacrificial link, and the second conductor form an electrical circuit, wherein the sacrificial link has a proximal spherical enlargement disposed in and connected to the proximal seal, and a distal spherical enlargement coupled to the stretch-resisting member; and

a vaso-occlusive device secured to the pusher assembly by the sacrificial link, the vaso-occlusive device having a distal portion secured to a distal end of the stretch-resisting member,

wherein the sacrificial link is configured to generate heat that thermally disintegrates the sacrificial link when a disintegration current is applied through the sacrificial link, thereby releasing the vaso-occlusive device from the pusher assembly.

2. The vaso-occlusive device delivery assembly of claim 1 , further comprising an adapter secured within a lumen of the vaso-occlusive device, wherein the distal spherical enlargement is disposed in and connected to the adapter.

3. The vaso-occlusive device delivery assembly of claim 1 ,

wherein the pusher assembly further comprises a distal seal affixed within a lumen of the vaso-occlusive device,

wherein the proximal seal and the distal seal respectively have lumens, and

wherein the sacrificial link extends through the lumens of the proximal seal and distal seal,

wherein the proximal spherical enlargement extends proximally of the proximal seal, creating a mechanical interference with the proximal seal, and

wherein the distal spherical enlargement extends distally of the distal seal, creating a mechanical interference with the distal seal.

4. A vaso-occlusive device delivery assembly, comprising:

a pusher assembly having proximal and distal ends, the pusher assembly comprising:

a pusher conduit having a lumen;

a proximal seal affixed within the lumen of the pusher conduit;

a stretch-resisting member;

a ring connected to the stretch-resisting member;

first and second conductors extending between the proximal and distal ends of the pusher assembly; and

a thermally-degradable conductive sacrificial loop disposed at the distal end of the pusher assembly, connected to the proximal seal, and electrically coupled between the respective first and second conductors, such that the first conductor, the sacrificial link, and the second conductor form an electrical circuit; and

a vaso-occlusive device secured to the pusher assembly by the sacrificial link, the vaso-occlusive device having a distal portion secured to a distal end of the stretch-resisting member,

wherein the sacrificial loop is configured to generate heat that thermally disintegrates the sacrificial loop when a disintegration current is applied through the sacrificial link, thereby releasing the vaso-occlusive device from the pusher assembly, and

wherein the pusher assembly further comprises a distal seal affixed within a lumen of the vaso-occlusive device, the tether extends through a lumen of the distal seal, and the ring is distal to the distal seal.

5. A vaso-occlusive device delivery assembly, comprising:

a pusher assembly having proximal and distal ends, the pusher assembly comprising:

a pusher conduit having a lumen;

a proximal seal affixed within the lumen of the pusher conduit;

a stretch-resisting member;

first and second conductors extending between the proximal and distal ends of the pusher assembly; and

a thermally-degradable conductive sacrificial loop disposed at the distal end of the pusher assembly, connected to the proximal seal, and electrically coupled between the respective first and second conductors, such that the first conductor, the sacrificial link, and the second conductor form an electrical circuit, wherein the stretch-resisting member is directly connected to the sacrificial loop; and

a vaso-occlusive device secured to the pusher assembly by the sacrificial link, the vaso-occlusive device having a distal portion secured to a distal end of the stretch-resisting member;

wherein the sacrificial loop is configured to generate heat that thermally disintegrates the sacrificial loop when a disintegration current is applied through the sacrificial link, thereby releasing the vaso-occlusive device from the pusher assembly.

6. The vaso-occlusive device delivery assembly of claim 5 , wherein the pusher assembly further comprises a distal seal affixed within a lumen of the vaso-occlusive device, and the stretch-resisting member extends through a lumen of the distal seal.

7. A vaso-occlusive device delivery assembly, comprising:

a pusher assembly having proximal and distal ends and comprising:

first and second conductors extending between the proximal and distal ends of the pusher assembly;

a thermally-degradable conductive sacrificial link disposed at the distal end of the pusher assembly and electrically coupled between the respective first and second conductors, such that the first conductor, the sacrificial link, and the second conductor form an electrical circuit, wherein the sacrificial link is a composite sacrificial link that includes an electrically conductive member and an electrically insulating member partially disposed in the electrically conductive member, leaving an exposed portion of the electrically conductive member, and wherein the composite sacrificial link defines grooves in which the first and second conductors are connected; and

a vaso-occlusive device secured to the pusher assembly by the sacrificial link,

wherein the sacrificial link is configured to generate heat that thermally disintegrates the sacrificial link when a disintegration current is applied through the sacrificial link, thereby causing the vaso-occlusive device from the pusher assembly.

8. The vaso-occlusive device delivery assembly of claim 7 , wherein the composite sacrificial link defines an opening to which the vaso-occlusive device is connected.

9. The vaso-occlusive device delivery assembly of claim 7 , wherein the electrically conductive member is composed of conductive polymer.

10. The vaso-occlusive device delivery assembly of claim 9 , wherein the electrically insulating member is composed of a non-conductive polymer.

11. The vaso-occlusive device delivery assembly of claim 7 , wherein the electrically conductive member has a notch.
