Abstract

According to an aspect, a display apparatus includes: a first light-transmissive substrate; a second light-transmissive substrate arranged to face the first light-transmissive substrate; a liquid crystal layer including polymer dispersed liquid crystals sealed between the first light-transmissive substrate and the second light-transmissive substrate; at least one light-emitting device arranged to face at least one of a side surface of the first light-transmissive substrate or a side surface of the second light-transmissive substrate; and at least one reflector arranged on at least one of a side surface of the first light-transmissive substrate or a side surface of the second light-transmissive substrate, the side surface of the first or second light-transmissive substrate being on an opposite side of the side surface of the first or second light-transmissive substrate to which the at least one light-emitting device faces, and configured to reflect light at the side surface on the opposite side.

Claims (18)

1. A display apparatus comprising:

a first light-transmissive substrate;

a second light-transmissive substrate arranged to face the first light-transmissive substrate;

a liquid crystal layer including polymer dispersed liquid crystals sealed between the first light-transmissive substrate and the second light-transmissive substrate;

a first light-emitting device arranged to face a first side surface of the second light-transmissive substrate or face both the first side surface of the second light-transmissive substrate and a first side surface of the first light-transmissive substrate;

a second light-emitting device arranged to face a second side surface of the second light-transmissive substrate or face both the second side surface of the second light-transmissive substrate and a second side surface of the first light-transmissive substrate;

a first reflector that is arranged on a third side surface of the second light-transmissive substrate, the third side surface being on an opposite side of the first side surface of the second light-transmissive substrate, and that is configured to reflect light at the third side surface of the second light-transmissive substrate; and

a second reflector that is arranged on a fourth side surface of the second light-transmissive substrate, the fourth side surface being on an opposite side of the second side surface of the second light-transmissive substrate, and that is configured to reflect light at the fourth side surface of the second light-transmissive substrate, wherein

an area of the first light-transmissive substrate is larger than an area of the second light-transmissive substrate in a plan view, and the first and second reflectors are located fully within the first light-transmissive substrate in the plan view,

the first light-transmissive substrate includes a first principal surface and a second principal surface that is a plane parallel to the first principal surface,

the second light-transmissive substrate includes a first principal surface and a second principal surface that is a plane parallel to the first principal surface, and

in a case that the polymer dispersed liquid crystals are in a non-scattering state, a background behind the display apparatus on the first principal surface side of the second light-transmissive substrate is visually recognized from the first principal surface of the first light-transmissive substrate, or a background behind the display apparatus on the first principal surface side of the first light-transmissive substrate is visually recognized from the first principal surface of the second light-transmissive substrate.

2. The display apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein

a side surface of the first light-transmissive substrate is perpendicular to the first principal surface of the first light-transmissive substrate, and a side surface of the second light-transmissive substrate is perpendicular to the first principal surface of the second light-transmissive substrate.

3. The display apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein

the first reflector and the second reflector are reflection films.

4. The display apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein

the first reflector and the second reflector are sputtered reflection films.
