Abstract

A golf club head includes a head body having a crown, sole and skirt therebetween, the head body defining an opening in a front portion and having a frame support around the periphery of the opening. A face plate is mounted within the opening and has a transition radius along one or more edges to at least partially wrap around one or more of the crown, sole and skirt. The head includes thin wall zones in the crown and skirt, a hosel flush with the crown and a weight mounted in the sole proximate to the face plate, such that the golf club head has a center of gravity located relatively low and forward in proximity to the face plate.

2. The club head of claim 1 , wherein the face comprises a composite material.

3. The club head of claim 1 , wherein the CGz/CGy ratio is less than −0.2 and up to −0.41, a maximum club head height is at least 57 mm and up to 75 mm, and a volume is between about 425 and 470 cm 3 .

4. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the recess has a volume between about 3.36 cm 3 to about 6.48 cm 3 .

5. A golf club head comprising:

a body having a crown and a sole;

a hosel that extends outward from the body; and

a face connected to a front end of the body;

wherein the sole includes a recess for receiving a weight, wherein the recess is elongated in a heel-toe direction adjacent to the face;

wherein the recess has a geometric center that is located about 14 mm to 20 mm from the leading edge of the club head measured in a front-to-back direction;

wherein the recess has a width of about 14 mm to 18 mm measured in a front-to-back direction, a length of at least 40 mm measured in a heel to toe direction, and the recess is located slightly off-center in favor of the heel side of the club head; and

the club head having a CGz/CGy ratio less than −0.20, a club head volume of at least about 360 cm 3 , and a loft angle less than about 15 degrees, wherein the golf club head has a center of gravity (CG) and has a head origin located at the center of the front surface of the face, a z-axis extends vertically through the origin perpendicular to the ground when the club head is in a normal address position with an upward direction being positive, a y-axis extends horizontally from the origin in a front-rear direction when the club head is in the normal address position with a rearward direction being positive, CGz is a vertical distance of the CG of the club head from the head origin along a z-axis, and CGy is a distance of the CG from the head origin along a y-axis.

6. The golf club head of claim 5 wherein the CGz/CGy ratio is less than −0.35.

7. The golf club head of claim 5 wherein the CGz/CGy ratio is less than −0.40.

8. The golf club head of claim 5 , wherein the face is a composite face plate.

9. The golf club head of claim 8 , wherein the crown has a leading edge that is set back at least about 14 mm from a leading edge of the sole when the club head is in a normal address position.

10. A golf club head comprising:

a body having a crown, a sole, a face, and a shaft-receiving hosel, the hosel having a bore defining a hosel axis, wherein the hosel extends outward from the body;

a face connected to a front end of the body;

a weight, the sole having a recess for receiving the weight, wherein the recess is rectangular when viewed from below, is elongated in a heel-toe direction adjacent to the face, and has a length of at least 40 mm in the heel-toe direction;

the weight having a density that is greater than a density of the body and the recess having a geometric center located about 14 mm to 20 mm from a leading edge of the club head; and

wherein the club head has a CGz/CGy ratio less than −0.30 and a club head volume of at least 360 cm 3 , wherein the golf club head has a center of gravity (CG) and has a head origin located at the center of the front surface of the face, a z-axis extends vertically through the origin perpendicular to the ground when the club head is in a normal address position with an upward direction being positive, a y-axis extends horizontally from the origin in a front-rear direction when the club head is in the normal address position with a rearward direction being positive, CGz is a vertical distance of the CG of the club head from the head origin along a z-axis, and CGy is a distance of the CG from the head origin along a y-axis;
