Abstract

An article of thermal protective clothing suitable for use in arc protection comprising a woven fabric comprising yarns comprising modacrylic fiber and aramid fiber, wherein 25 to 100 parts of the aramid fiber contain 0.5 to 20 weight percent discrete homogeneously dispersed carbon particles and 0 to 75 parts of the aramid fiber are free of discrete carbon particles; the fabric having an ATPV of 10 cal/cm 2 or greater at a basis weight of 6 ounces per square yard (203 grams per square meter) or less, and a total content of 0.1 to 3 weight percent discrete carbon particles.

Claims (17)

1. An article of thermal protective clothing suitable for use in arc protection comprising woven fabric, the fabric comprising yarns comprising modacrylic fiber and aramid fiber, wherein,

a) 25 to 100 parts by weight of the aramid fiber present in the yarns contain 0.5 to 20 weight percent discrete carbon particles based on the amount of carbon particles in an individual fiber, the carbon particles being homogeneously dispersed in that fiber; and

b) 0 to 75 parts by weight of the aramid fiber present in the yarns are free of discrete carbon particles;

the fabric having an ATPV of 10 cal/cm 2 or greater at a basis weight of 6 ounces per square yard (203 grams per square meter) or less, and a total content of 0.1 to 3 weight percent discrete carbon particles.

2. The article of claim 1 wherein the aramid fiber in a) is present in an amount of 25 to 50 parts, and the aramid fiber in b) is present in an amount of 50 to 75 parts.

3. The article of claim 1 wherein the yarns comprising modacrylic fiber and aramid fiber comprise 8 to 85 parts by weight of aramid fiber, based on the amount of aramid fiber and modacrylic fiber in the yarn.

4. The article of claim 3 wherein the yarns comprising modacrylic fiber and aramid fiber comprise 25 to 45 parts by weight of aramid fiber, based on the amount of aramid fiber and modacrylic fiber in the yarn.

5. The article of claim 1 wherein the aramid fiber in the yarns comprises a mixture of meta-aramid and para-aramid fibers.

6. The article of claim 5 wherein the weight ratio of meta-aramid to para-aramid fibers ranges from 95:5 to 1:1.

7. The article of claim 5 wherein the meta-aramid is poly(meta-phenylene isophthalamide).

8. The article of claim 5 wherein the para-aramid is poly(para-phenylene terephthalamide).

9. The article of claim 1 wherein the yarns comprising modacrylic fiber and aramid fiber comprise 15 to 75 parts by weight of modacrylic fiber, based on the amount of aramid fiber and modacrylic fiber in the yarn.

10. The article of claim 9 wherein the yarns comprising modacrylic fiber and aramid fiber comprise 55 to 75 parts by weight of modacrylic fiber, based on the amount of aramid fiber and modacrylic fiber in the yarn.

11. The article of claim 1 wherein the fabric has a total content of 0.5 to 3 weight percent discrete carbon particles.

12. The article of claim 1 wherein the aramid fiber in a) comprises 0.5 to 6 weight percent discrete carbon particles.

13. The article of claim 1 having a basis weight of 5.5 ounces (186 grams per square meter) or less.

14. The article of claim 13 having a basis weight of 5.0 ounces (170 grams per square meter) or less.
