Abstract

Durability-enhanced bearing assemblies, apparatuses, and motor assemblies using the same are disclosed. In an embodiment, a bearing assembly may include a plurality of superhard bearing elements distributed circumferentially about an axis. Each of the superhard bearing elements includes a bearing surface. The bearing assembly may further include a support ring structure that carries the plurality of superhard bearing elements. The support ring structure may have a first portion that exhibits a first yield strength and a second portion that exhibits a second yield strength. The first yield strength of the first portion may be greater than the second yield strength of the second portion.

Claims (32)

1. A bearing assembly, comprising:

a plurality of superhard bearing elements distributed circumferentially about an axis, each of the plurality of superhard bearing elements having a bearing surface; and

a support ring structure including titanium material and a plurality of recesses, each of the plurality of superhard bearing elements secured to the support ring structure with each of the plurality of superhard bearing elements positioned partially within a corresponding one of the plurality of recesses.

2. The bearing assembly of claim 1 , wherein the titanium material includes a titanium alloy.

3. The bearing assembly of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the support ring structure exhibits a yield strength of about 60 ksi to about 140 ksi.

4. The bearing assembly of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the support ring structure exhibits a yield strength of about 125 ksi to about 250 ksi.

5. The bearing assembly of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the support ring structure exhibits a yield strength of about 150 ksi to about 225 ksi.

6. The bearing assembly of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the support ring structure exhibits a yield strength of about 175 ksi to about 200 ksi.

7. The bearing assembly of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the support ring structure exhibits a yield strength of about 45 ksi to about 150 ksi.

8. The bearing assembly of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of superhard bearing elements is brazed to the support ring structure.

9. The bearing assembly of claim 1 , wherein the support ring structure includes:

a first portion exhibiting a first yield strength; and

a second portion to which each of the plurality of superhard bearing elements is secured, the second portion exhibiting a second yield strength that is less than the first yield strength.

10. The bearing assembly of claim 9 , wherein the first portion includes a carrier and the second portion includes a support ring, the support ring at least partially received within the carrier.

11. The bearing assembly of claim 9 , wherein the first portion and the second portion are integrally formed with each other.

12. The bearing assembly of claim 9 , wherein the first portion includes the titanium material.

13. The bearing assembly of claim 10 , wherein the bearing surfaces of the plurality of superhard bearing elements are spaced from the support ring structure.

14. A bearing apparatus, comprising:

a first bearing assembly including:

a first plurality of superhard bearing elements distributed circumferentially about an axis, each of the first plurality of superhard bearing elements having a bearing surface; and

a first support ring structure including titanium material and a plurality of recesses, each of the first plurality of superhard bearing elements secured to the first support ring structure with each of the first plurality of superhard bearing elements positioned partially within a corresponding one of the plurality of recesses; and

a second bearing assembly including:

a second plurality of superhard bearing elements generally opposed to the first plurality of superhard bearing elements of the first bearing assembly; and

a second support ring structure that carries the second plurality of superhard bearing elements.

15. The bearing apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the titanium material includes a titanium alloy.

16. The bearing apparatus of claim 14 , wherein at least a portion of the first support ring structure exhibits a yield strength of about 60 ksi to about 140 ksi.

17. The bearing apparatus of claim 14 , wherein at least a portion of the first support ring structure exhibits a yield strength of about 125 ksi to about 250 ksi.

18. A bearing assembly, comprising:

a plurality of superhard bearing elements distributed circumferentially about an axis, each of the plurality of superhard bearing elements having a bearing surface;

a support ring structure including titanium material and a plurality of recesses, each of the plurality of superhard bearing elements brazed to the support ring structure with each of the plurality of superhard bearing elements positioned partially within a corresponding recess of the plurality of recesses.

19. The bearing assembly of claim 18 , wherein the titanium material includes a titanium alloy.

20. The bearing assembly of claim 18 , wherein at least a portion of the support ring structure exhibits a yield strength is about 125 ksi to about 250 ksi.
