Abstract

The system enables one to securely recycle an electronic device in a publicly accessible location. In particular, the embodiment described may be used by a mobile phone owner to submit his/her mobile phone for recycling via an electronic kiosk and receive compensation in some form. The compensation might be dispersed via cash, voucher, credit or debit card, or other magnetic or electronic transaction methods.

Claims (48)

1. A system for purchasing a used electronic device, the system comprising:

a kiosk configured to receive the electronic device, wherein the kiosk includes an externally directed camera and an internal inspection area; and

a controller including memory and one or more processors, wherein the memory carries instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the system to—

receive the electronic device from a user at the kiosk,

collect information from the electronic device via the kiosk,

identify the electronic device based at least partially on the collected information,

present, to the user via the kiosk, an offer to purchase the electronic device based at least partially on a result of identifying the electronic device,

lock down the inspection area to prevent the user from accessing the electronic device,

capture an image of the user via the externally directed camera, and

associate the electronic device with the image of the user.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the system to collect the information via a wireless connection between the kiosk and the electronic device.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the system to collect the information via a wired connection between the kiosk and the electronic device.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the system to identify the electronic device by comparing the collected information to information in a database.

5. The system of claim 1 wherein:

the kiosk includes an internal storage receptacle; and

the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the system to—

receive an acceptance of the offer from the user, and

move the electronic device into the storage receptacle after receiving the acceptance.

6. The system of claim 1 wherein:

the collected information includes a unique identifier of the electronic device; and

the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the system to identify the electronic device by identifying a device model corresponding to the identifier.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the system to tag the electronic device with a transaction identifier.

8. The system of claim 7 wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the system to tag the electronic device by loading the transaction identifier onto the electronic device.

9. The system of claim 1 wherein:

the kiosk includes a user interface; and

the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the system to ask the user a question about the electronic device via the user interface.

10. The system of claim 9 wherein the question is a question about a condition of a display of the electronic device.

11. A method of purchasing a used electronic device, the method comprising:

receiving the electronic device from a user at a kiosk;

collecting, via the kiosk, information from the electronic device after receiving the electronic device;

identifying the electronic device based at least partially on the collected information;

presenting, to the user via the kiosk, an offer to purchase the electronic device;

locking down an internal inspection area of the kiosk to prevent the user from accessing the electronic device;

capturing an image of the user via an externally directed camera of the kiosk; and

associating the electronic device with the image of the user.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein collecting the information includes wirelessly collecting the information.

13. The method of claim 11 wherein collecting the information includes collecting the information via a wired connection between the kiosk and the electronic device.

14. The method of claim 11 wherein identifying the electronic device includes comparing the collected information to information in a database.

15. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

receiving an acceptance of the offer from the user; and

moving the electronic device into a storage receptacle of the kiosk after receiving the acceptance.

16. The method of claim 11 wherein:

collecting the information includes collecting a unique identifier of the electronic device; and

identifying the electronic device includes identifying a device model corresponding to the identifier.

17. The method of claim 11 , further comprising tagging the electronic device with a transaction identifier.

18. The method of claim 17 wherein tagging the electronic device includes loading the transaction identifier onto the electronic device.

19. The method of claim 11 , further comprising prompting the user to answer a question about the electronic device via a user interface of the kiosk.

20. The method of claim 19 wherein the question is a question about a condition of a display of the electronic device.
