Abstract

A method of surgical robot operation includes moving a surgical instrument through a medium using the surgical robot, where the surgical robot attempts to move the surgical instrument to a desired position. The method further includes measuring an actual position of the surgical instrument, and calculating a difference between the actual position and the desired position. The actual position of the surgical instrument is adjusted to the desired position using the surgical robot.

Claims (38)

1. A method of surgical robot operation, comprising:

moving a surgical instrument through a first tissue using a surgical robot, wherein the surgical robot attempts to move the surgical instrument to a desired position along a trajectory that passes through the first tissue and a second tissue that differs from the first tissue;

measuring an actual position of the surgical instrument;

calculating a difference between the actual position and the desired position; and

adjusting the actual position of the surgical instrument, based upon the difference, to the desired position through the second tissue, using the surgical robot, wherein adjusting includes using a machine learning algorithm to instruct the surgical robot to apply to the surgical instrument at least a force that is sufficient to move the surgical instrument through the second tissue, the machine learning algorithm recognizing a composition of the second tissue based upon at least the force that is sufficient to move the surgical instrument through the second tissue.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein moving the surgical instrument through the first tissue using the surgical robot includes the surgical robot applying an initial force that is less than the force that is sufficient to move the surgical instrument through the second tissue.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein measuring the actual position of the surgical instrument includes at least one of optically determining the actual position with one or more image sensors, measuring a distance between markers and the surgical instrument, or mechanically measuring the actual position of the surgical instrument with the surgical robot.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising motion scaling movement of the surgical instrument through the second tissue.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving input from a user to move the surgical instrument; and

filtering tremor from the user's input prior to moving the surgical instrument through the first tissue.

6. A robotic surgical system, comprising:

a surgical robot including one or more arms configured to hold one or more surgical instruments; and

a processing apparatus coupled to the surgical robot to control the surgical robot, wherein the processing apparatus includes logic that when executed by the processing apparatus causes the processing apparatus to perform operations including:

receiving a signal from a controller;

moving, with the surgical robot, the one or more surgical instruments through a first tissue along a trajectory that passes through the first tissue and a second tissue that differs from the first tissue in response to the signal;

measuring an actual position of the one or more surgical instruments;

calculating a difference between the actual position and a desired position; and

adjusting, based upon the difference, the actual position of the one or more surgical instruments to the desired position through the second tissue using the surgical robot, wherein adjusting includes using a machine learning algorithm to instruct the surgical robot to apply to the surgical instrument at least a force that is sufficient to move the surgical instrument through the second tissue, the machine learning algorithm recognizing a composition of the second tissue based upon at least the force that is sufficient to move the surgical instrument through the second tissue.

7. The robotic surgical system of claim 6 , wherein the surgical robot includes pressure sensors coupled to sense a resistance when moving the one or more surgical instruments through the second tissue and output a resistance signal, and wherein the processing apparatus further includes logic that when executed by the processing apparatus causes the processing apparatus to perform operations including:

using the machine learning algorithm to recognize the composition of the second tissue using at least the resistance signal.

8. The robotic surgical system of claim 6 , wherein moving, with the surgical robot, the one or more surgical instruments through the first tissue in response to the signal along the trajectory includes the surgical robot applying an initial force that is less than the force that is sufficient to move the one or more surgical instruments from the actual position to the desired position through the second tissue.

9. The robotic surgical system of claim 6 , wherein the processing apparatus further includes logic that when executed by the processing apparatus causes the processing apparatus to perform operations including:

motion scaling a movement of the one or more surgical instruments through the second tissue, wherein motion scaling includes moving the one or more surgical instruments less than indicated by the signal from the controller.

10. The robotic surgical system of claim 6 , wherein the signal includes tremor from a user of the controller, and wherein the processing apparatus further includes logic that when executed by the processing apparatus causes the processing apparatus to perform operations including:

filtering the tremor from the signal prior to moving the one or more surgical instruments through the first tissue in response to the signal.

11. The robotic surgical system of claim 6 , wherein the processing apparatus further includes logic that when executed by the processing apparatus causes the processing apparatus to perform operations including:

outputting a haptic feedback signal to be received by the controller, and wherein the haptic feedback signal changes a physical resistance of the controller.

12. A method of data collection in robotic surgery, comprising:

moving a surgical instrument through a first tissue using a surgical robot coupled to the surgical robot, wherein the surgical robot attempts to move the surgical instrument to a desired position along a trajectory that passes through the first tissue and a second tissue that differs from the first tissue;

measuring an actual position of the surgical instrument;

calculating a difference between the actual position and the desired position, and a movement of the actual position of the surgical instrument to the desired position, based upon the difference;

recording a composition of the second tissue that the surgical instrument moved through during the movement to the desired position, and a force needed to move the surgical instrument through the second tissue;

recognizing, with a machine learning algorithm, the composition of the second tissue based upon at least a force needed to move the surgical instrument through the second tissue; and

using the machine learning algorithm to instruct the surgical robot to apply to the surgical instrument at least the force needed to move the surgical instrument through the second tissue.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising diagnosing a problem with the surgical robot using the difference between the actual position and the desired position, wherein the difference is attributed to at least one of a hardware failure in the surgical robot or a software failure.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein composition of the second tissue and the force needed to move through the second tissue are stored in a database.

15. The method of claim 12 , further comprising training the machine learning algorithm, using the composition of the second tissue and the force needed to move the surgical instrument through the second tissue, to instruct the surgical robot to apply to the surgical instrument at least the force that is sufficient to move the surgical instrument from the actual position through the second tissue, to recognize the second tissue, and to associate the second tissue with the force that is sufficient to move the surgical instrument through the second tissue.
