Abstract

A monitor recorder-implemented method for electrocardiography data compression and an electrocardiography monitor recorder with integral data compression are provided. A series of data items are obtained, each of the data items associated with a magnitude of an ECG signal sensed by a monitor recorder. A range is set for an initial one of the data items in the series. Each of the data items remaining in the series is processed, including: obtaining an estimation of probabilities of the data items appearing next to that data item in the series; dividing the further range into sub-ranges, each sub-range representing a fraction of the further range proportional to the probabilities of the next data items; selecting the sub-range corresponding to the data item next to that data item in the series; and representing the next data item by the selected sub-range in a non-volatile memory.

Claims (48)

1. A monitor recorder-implemented method for electrocardiography data compression, comprising the steps of:

obtaining by a monitor recorder a series of data items, each of the data items associated with an electrocardiographic signal magnitude, the monitor recorder comprising a housing configured to fit within a receptacle on a a patch applied to a patient, an electrocardiographic front end circuit within the housing that is operable to sense electrocardiographic signals through electrocardiographic electrodes each positioned on one end of the electrode patch, a non-volatile memory within the housing, and a micro-controller within the housing that is interfaced to the electrocardiographic front end circuit and the non-volatile memory, wherein the data items are derived by the micro-controller from the sensed electrocardiographic signals;

performing via the microcontroller of the monitor recorder a lossy compression of the data items by encoding each data item with a value, wherein one or more of the values comprise multiple numbers;

setting by the micro-controller a range for one of the compressed data items in the series; and

further compressing by the micro-controller each of the data items remaining in the series by converting each of the multi-number values to a single number value, comprising:

obtaining an estimation of probabilities of the data items appearing next to that data item in the series;

dividing the range into sub-ranges, each sub-range representing a fraction of the range proportional to the probabilities of the next data items;

selecting the sub-range corresponding to the data item next to that data item in the series; and

representing the next data item by the selected sub-range in the non-volatile memory,

wherein the lossy compression followed by the further compression increases data storage capacity of the non-volatile memory and reduces power consumption of the monitor recorder to extend wear time of the monitor recorder.

2. A method according to claim 1 , further comprising:

using a statistical model to obtain the estimations of the probabilities.

3. A method according to claim 2 , wherein the statistical model uses an electrocardiography data sample to obtain the estimations of the probabilities.

4. A method according to claim 2 , further comprising:

for each of the data items, generating at least one table of the estimations of the probabilities.

5. A method according to claim 4 , wherein the estimations of the probabilities of the next data items for one of the data items are calculated using at least two of the data items preceding the one data item in the series.

6. A method according to claim 5 , wherein a number of the tables generated for each of the data items depends on a number of the preceding data items used in calculation.

7. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the data items are represented in the non-volatile memory periodically, continually, or en masse upon a completion of the processing.

8. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the range for the initial data item is between 0 and 1.

9. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the data items represented in the memory comprise a single number.

10. A method according to claim 1 , further comprising:

adjusting the range to equal the assigned sub-range for the processing of another one of the codes.

11. An electrocardiography monitor recorder with integral data compression, comprising:

a housing configured to fit within a receptacle on a patch applied to a patient;

a non-volatile memory within the housing;

an electrocardiographic front end circuit within the housing operable to sense electrocardiographic signals via the interface through electrocardiographic electrodes each positioned on one end of the electrode patch;

a micro-controller within the housing and interfaced to the non-volatile memory and the electrocardiographic front end circuit, the micro-controller operable to execute under a micro-programmable control and configured to:

obtain a series of data items, each of the data items associated with a magnitude of one of the electrocardiographic signals sensed by the electrocardiographic front end circuit, wherein the data items are derived by the micro-controller from the sensed electrocardiographic signals;

perform a lossy compression of the data items by encoding each data item with a value, wherein one or more of the values comprise multiple numbers;

set a range for an initial one of the data items in the series; and

further compress each of the data items remaining in the series by converting each of the multi-number values to a single number value, comprising:

obtain an estimation of probabilities of the data items appearing next to that data item in the series;

divide the range into sub-ranges, each sub-range representing a fraction of the range proportional to the probabilities of the next data items;

select the sub-range corresponding to the data item next to that data item in the series; and

represent the next data item by the selected sub-range in the non-volatile memory,

wherein the lossy compression followed by the further compression increases data storage capacity of the non-volatile memory and reduces power consumption of the monitor recorder to extend wear time of the monitor recorder.

12. A monitor recorder according to claim 11 , further comprising:

using a statistical model to obtain the estimations of the probabilities.

13. A monitor recorder according to claim 12 , wherein the statistical model uses an electrocardiography data sample to obtain the estimations of the probabilities.

14. A monitor recorder according to claim 12 , further comprising:

for each of the data items, generating at least one table of the estimations of the probabilities.
