Abstract

A system includes a first topping module with a first hopper holding a first topping sample of a first topping type and a first blade to cut a first topping serving. A second topping module includes a second hopper holding a second topping sample of a second topping type and a second blade to cut a second topping serving. A conveyor moves a topping vehicle between a first position below the first hopper and a second position below the second hopper. An order specifies the first topping type and the second topping type. An actuator system moves the first blade to cut the first topping serving according to the order to dispense the first topping serving onto the topping vehicle. The actuator system moves the second blade to cut the second topping serving according to the order to dispense the first topping serving onto the topping vehicle.

Claims (52)

1. A system for dispensing toppings onto a plurality of topping vehicles, the system comprising:

a first topping module comprising:

a first hopper configured to contain a first topping sample of a first topping type; and

a first blade movable relative to the first hopper to cut a first topping serving from the first topping sample;

a second topping module comprising:

a second hopper configured to contain a second topping sample of a second topping type; and

a second blade movable relative to the second hopper to cut a second topping serving from the second topping sample;

a conveyor configured to move the plurality of topping vehicles independently of each other between a first position below a discharge end of the first hopper to selectively receive the first topping serving and a second position below a discharge end of the second hopper to selectively receive the second topping serving; and

an actuator system drivingly connected to the first and second blades,

wherein the actuator system is configured to selectively move the first blade to cut the first topping serving according to custom topping orders to allow the first topping serving to be dispensed onto one of the plurality of topping vehicles,

wherein the actuator system is configured to selectively move the second blade to cut the second topping serving according to the custom topping orders to allow the second topping serving to be dispensed onto one of the plurality of topping vehicles, and

wherein the conveyor is configured to, in response to (i) a first order of the custom topping orders being associated with a first topping vehicle of the plurality of topping vehicles and specifying presence of the first topping type and the second topping type and (ii) a second order of the custom topping orders being associated with a second topping vehicle of the plurality of topping vehicles and specifying absence of the second topping type:

position the first topping vehicle at the first position and stop the first topping vehicle at the first position to receive the first topping serving while simultaneously and independently moving the second topping vehicle past the second position to bypass the second topping module without receiving any topping servings of the second topping type.

2. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a first retaining plate coupled to the first hopper,

wherein the first retaining plate is movable relative to the first hopper to selectively dispense the first topping serving onto one of the plurality of topping vehicles in the first position.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the first retaining plate is movable relative to the first hopper independently of the first blade.

4. The system of claim 2 , wherein the first retaining plate is movable with the first blade relative to the first hopper.

5. The system of claim 2 , wherein the first retaining plate is configured to support the first topping sample while the first blade is cutting the first topping serving from the first topping sample.

6. The system of claim 2 , wherein the actuation system comprises a first selection actuator configured to move among:

a first actuator position in which the first selection actuator is engaged with a first hook attached to the first blade and is disengaged from a second hook of the first retaining plate;

a second actuator position in which the first selection actuator is engaged with the second hook and is disengaged from the first hook; and

a third actuator position in which the first selection actuator is disengaged from the first hook and the second hook,

wherein:

when the first selection actuator is in the first actuator position, the first selection actuator is configured to move the first blade relative to the first hopper to cut the first topping serving, and

when the first selection actuator is in the second actuator position, the first selection actuator is configured to move the first retaining plate relative to the first hopper to dispense the first topping serving onto the one of the plurality of topping vehicles.

7. The system of claim 2 , further comprising:

a second retaining plate coupled to the second hopper,

wherein the second retaining plate is movable relative to the second hopper to selectively dispense the second topping serving onto the one of the plurality of topping vehicles in the second position.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the second retaining plate is movable relative to the second hopper independently of the second blade.

9. The system of claim 7 , wherein the second retaining plate is movable with the second blade relative to the second hopper.

10. The system of claim 7 , wherein the second retaining plate is configured to support the second topping sample while the second blade is cutting the second topping serving from the second topping sample.

11. The system of claim 7 , wherein the actuator system is drivingly coupled to the first and second retaining plates.

12. The system of claim 7 , further comprising:

a heating element thermally coupled to the second retaining plate,

wherein the heating element is configured to cooperate with the second retaining plate to heat a face of the second topping serving in contact with the second retaining plate.

13. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a first topping guide disposed within the first hopper,

wherein the first topping guide is movable relative to the first hopper to restrain the first topping sample within the first hopper.

14. A system for dispensing toppings onto a plurality of topping vehicles, the system comprising:

a first hopper configured to contain a first topping sample;

a first blade movable relative to the first hopper to cut a first topping serving from the first topping sample;

a first retaining plate configured to support the first topping sample while the first blade is cutting the first topping serving from the first topping sample, wherein the first retaining plate is movable relative to the first hopper to dispense the first topping serving onto one of the plurality of topping vehicles;

a second hopper configured to contain a second topping sample; and

a conveyor configured to transport a first topping vehicle of the plurality of topping vehicles and a second topping vehicle of the plurality of topping vehicles independently of each other between the first hopper and the second hopper,

wherein the conveyor is configured to selectively move the first topping vehicle independently of the second topping vehicle to position the first topping vehicle at the first hopper and simultaneously stop the first topping vehicle at the first hopper to receive the first topping serving while independently moving the second topping vehicle past the second hopper to bypass the second hopper without receiving the second topping sample.

15. The system of claim 14 , further comprising:

a second blade movable relative to the second hopper to cut a second topping serving from the second topping sample; and

a second retaining plate configured to support the second topping sample while the second blade is cutting the second topping serving from the second topping sample, wherein the second retaining plate is movable relative to the second hopper to dispense the second topping serving onto one of the plurality of topping vehicles.

16. The system of claim 14 , wherein the first blade is movable independently of the first retaining plate.

17. The system of claim 14 , wherein the first blade is movable with the first retaining plate.

18. The system of claim 14 , wherein the first blade reciprocates relative to the first retaining plate.
