Abstract

A communication cable suitable for Power over Ethernet applications may include a jacket that defines a cable core and a plurality of twisted pairs of conductors disposed within the cable core. Each of the conductors may have a diameter of at least approximately 0.0240 inches or the equivalent of a 22 American Wire Gauge conductor. Additionally, each of the plurality of twisted pairs may have a different twist lay, and the respective twist lays may be selected such that the communications cable satisfies the requirements of a Category 6A cabling standard. The communications cable may have a delay skew of less than approximately 45 nanoseconds per 100 meters and a direct current resistance unbalance between pairs of less than approximately 100 milliohms per 100 meters.

5. The communications cable of claim 1 , wherein the cable satisfies electrical performance requirements of the ANSI/TIA-568-C.2 standard for Category 6A cables.

6. The communications cable of claim 1 , wherein each of the conductors is insulated with a material comprising fluorinated ethylene propylene.

7. The communications cable of claim 1 , further comprising a shield formed around at least one of the plurality of twisted pairs, the shield comprising electrically conductive material.

8. The communications cable of claim 7 , wherein the shield comprises a plurality of patches of electrically conductive material that are electrically isolated from one another.

9. A communications cable, comprising:

a jacket defining a cable core;

a plurality of twisted pairs of conductors disposed within the cable core, each of the conductors comprising a size greater than or equal to a 22 American Wire Gauge conductor,

wherein each of the plurality of twisted pairs has a different twist lay, each respective twist lay between approximately 0.292 inches and approximately 0.504 inches, and

wherein the respective twist lays are selected such that the communications cable has a propagation delay skew of less than approximately 45 nanoseconds per 100 meters and a direct current resistance unbalance between any two of the plurality of twisted pairs of less than approximately 100 milliohms per 100 meters.

10. The communications cable of claim 9 , wherein the plurality of twisted pairs is capable of transmitting approximately 100 Watts at approximately 1.0 ampere per pair over a distance of approximately 100 meters with at least approximately 88% efficiency.
