Abstract

A vertebral column correction system for correcting a spinal deformity without fusing the joint segments is disclosed. The vertebral column correction system may have first and second vertebral anchors secured to first and second vertebrae. The vertebral column correction system may further comprise one or more intermediate vertebral anchors secured to vertebrae between the first and second vertebrae. A connection member may be disposed within a head portion of the vertebral anchors. At least a portion of the connection member may be a flexible member, such as a flexible cord, configured for tensioning between at least two vertebral anchors for providing a desired amount of tension to apply a correctional force to the spinal column. A spring member, or other tensioning member, may maintain the tension of the connection member.

Claims (42)

1. A vertebral anchor system comprising:

a threaded shank comprising a proximal shank portion and a distal shank portion configured to engage bone;

a head including two open sides to substantially form a U shape, the head comprising:

a distal head portion coupleable to the proximal shank portion;

a proximal head portion open at a proximal end;

a concave channel at the distal head portion, the concave channel configured to receive a connection member therethrough; and

a threaded bore extending between the proximal head portion and the distal head portion;

a locking member receivable within the threaded bore adjacent the concave channel to partially enclose the two open sides, the locking member to secure the connection member between the locking member and the concave channel, wherein the locking member is convex at a distal locking portion to create, together with the concave channel, an aperture to directly engage the connection member and to receive the connection member therethrough; and

a securing member threadably engageable with the threaded bore to retain the locking member within the head portion;

wherein the securing member is threadable into the threaded bore and extendable into the locking member to retain the connection member in the aperture without applying a clamping force onto the connection member, allowing longitudinal movement of the connection member within the aperture.

2. The vertebral anchor system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a tensioning member couplable to a proximal end of the connection member, the tensioning member configured to solely maintain the connection member in tension, when the shank is secured to a first vertebra and a second vertebral anchor is secured to a second vertebra.

3. A vertebral column correction system comprising:

a connection member;

a first vertebral anchor and a second vertebral anchor, each vertebral anchor comprising:

a threaded shank comprising a proximal shank portion and a distal shank portion configured to engage bone;

a head including two open sides, the head comprising:

a distal head portion coupleable to the proximal shank portion;

a proximal head portion open at a proximal end;

a concave channel at the distal head portion, the concave channel configured to receive the connection member therethrough;

an interior head portion extending between the proximal head portion and the distal head portion to, together with the two open sides, substantially form a U shape; and

a locking member receivable within the interior head portion to partially enclose the two open sides, the locking member to secure the connection member between the locking member and the concave channel;

an engaging member receivable in the interior head portion to retain the locking member within the head portion; and

a single tensioning member couplable to a proximal end of the connection member;

wherein the connection member is extendable through the open sides of the head; and

wherein the securing member is threadable into the threaded bore and is extendable into the locking member, the securing member to retain the connection member between the locking member and the concave channel without applying a clamping force onto the connection member, allowing longitudinal movement of the connection member within the aperture.

4. The vertebral column correction system of claim 3 , wherein the head further comprises a threaded bore extending between the proximal portion and the distal portion, the locking member receivable within the threaded bore, and the securing member threadably engageable with the threaded bore to retain the locking member within the head portion.

5. The vertebral column correction system of claim 3 , wherein the connection member is sized to be longitudinally displaceable through the first head portion and the second head portion, the connection member configured for tensioning between the first vertebral anchor and the second vertebral anchor;

wherein the tensioning member configured to solely maintain the connection member in tension between the first vertebral anchor and the second vertebral anchor; when the first vertebral anchor is secured to the first vertebra and the second vertebral anchor is secured to the second vertebra; and

wherein the system is free of additional structure applying tension to the connection member between the first vertebral anchor and the second vertebral anchor.

6. A vertebral anchor system comprising:

a threaded shank comprising a proximal shank portion and a distal shank portion configured to engage bone;

a head including two open sides to substantially form a U shape, the head comprising:

a distal head portion coupleable to the proximal shank portion;

a proximal head portion open at a proximal end;

a concave channel at the distal head portion; the concave channel configured to receive a connection member therethrough; and

a threaded bore extending between the proximal head portion and the distal head portion;

a locking member receivable within the threaded bore adjacent the concave channel to partially enclose the two open sides; the locking member to secure the connection member between the locking member and the concave channel, wherein the locking member is convex at a distal locking portion to create, together with the concave channel, an aperture to receive the connection member therethrough; and

a securing member threadably engageable with the threaded bore to retain the locking member within the head portion, the securing member extendable into the locking member to retain the connection member without applying a clamping force onto the connection member, allowing longitudinal movement of the connection member within the aperture.

7. The vertebral anchor system of claim 6 , further comprising:

a tensioning member couplable to a proximal end of the connection member, the tensioning member configured to solely maintain the connection member in tension, when the shank is secured to a first vertebra.

8. The vertebral anchor system of claim 6 , wherein the aperture is configured to directly engage the connection member.
