Abstract

A method, device, or system for treating eye disorders or conditions, comprising restoring or increasing blood flow or blood flow rate in an artery that supplies blood to or in the eye, thereby increasing the amount of nutrient(s) that reaches the eye or a portion thereof. The invention also includes methods, devices, or systems for treating eye disorders or conditions which use reverse flow or retrograde flow structures and systems during the treatment of the eye disease.

Claims (41)

1. A method, comprising:

positioning a first device within an ophthalmic artery of the subject;

inducing retrograde flow in the ophthalmic artery of the subject; and

treating at least one of a blockage, a stenosis, a lesion, plaque, or other physiology in at least one of the ophthalmic artery and the junction between an internal carotid artery and the ophthalmic artery.

2. The method of claim 1 , further including positioning a second device within a venous system of the subject.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the first device is a first sheath, and the second device is a second sheath, and further including fluidly coupling the first sheath with the second sheath.

4. The method of claim 3 , further including regulating retrograde flow via a control assembly fluidly coupled to the first sheath and the second sheath.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein positioning the second device within the venous system includes positioning the second device within an internal jugular vein of the subject.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first device includes an expandable portion on a distal end thereof, the method further including expanding the expandable portion so as to impede antegrade blood flow in a portion of the ophthalmic artery of the subject.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein expanding the expandable portion includes imparting a pressure gradient differential between the ophthalmic artery and a venous system of the subject.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the expandable portion includes a balloon, the method further including delivering an inflation fluid to the balloon.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first device includes an expandable portion, the method further including contacting an arterial vessel wall via the expandable portion.

10. The method of claim 1 , further including receiving the induced retrograde flow into a distal end of the first device.

11. The method of claim 1 , further including dislodging at least a portion of the blockage, the stenosis, the lesion, or the plaque.

12. The method of claim 11 , further including conveying the dislodged portion upstream of the ophthalmic artery via the induced retrograde flow.

13. The method of claim 1 , further including filtering the induced retrograde flow.

14. The method of claim 1 , further comprising extending a second device through a lumen of the first device.

15. A method, comprising:

expanding at least a portion of a first device positioned within an arterial system of a subject and inducing retrograde blood flow through an ophthalmic artery of the subject; and

dislodging at least a portion of a blockage, a stenosis, a lesion, or plaque of at least one of the ophthalmic artery and a junction between an internal carotid artery and the ophthalmic artery.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein expanding the at least a portion of the first device includes imparting a pressure gradient differential between the arterial system and a venous system of the subject.

17. The method of claim 16 , further including fluidly coupling the first device with a second device positioned within the venous system of the subject.

18. The method of claim 15 , further including conveying the dislodged portion upstream of the ophthalmic artery via the induced retrograde blood flow.

19. The method of claim 15 , further including receiving the induced retrograde blood flow into a distal end of the first device.

20. The method of claim 15 , further including regulating the induced retrograde blood flow via a control assembly fluidly coupled to the first device.

21. A method, comprising:

fluidly coupling a first device located within an arterial system of a subject with a second device located within a venous system of the subject;

inducing a flow of blood from an ophthalmic artery of the subject, through the first device, through the second device, and into the venous system of the subject; and

treating at least one of the ophthalmic artery and a junction between an internal carotid artery and the ophthalmic artery of the subject.

22. The method of claim 21 , wherein the first device includes an expandable portion on a distal end thereof, the method further including expanding the expandable portion to impede antegrade blood flow in at least a portion of the arterial system of the subject.

23. The method of claim 22 , wherein the expandable portion includes a balloon, the method further including delivering an inflation fluid to the balloon.

24. The method of claim 21 , further including regulating the flow of blood via a control assembly fluidly coupled to the first device and the second device.

25. The method of claim 21 , further including conveying tissue, debris, or material of a blockage, a stenosis, or a lesion upstream of the ophthalmic artery via the induced flow of blood.

26. The method of claim 21 , further including positioning the first device within at least one of the ophthalmic artery or the internal carotid artery of the subject.

27. The method of claim 21 , further including positioning the second device within an internal jugular vein of the subject.

28. A method, comprising:

inducing retrograde flow within an ophthalmic artery of a subject via a first device located within an arterial system of the subject;

extending a second device through a lumen of the first device; and

treating the ophthalmic artery.

29. The method of claim 28 , wherein the first device is a first sheath, the method further including fluidly coupling the first sheath with a second sheath positioned within the venous system of the subject.

30. The method of claim 28 , wherein the first device includes an expandable portion on a distal end thereof, the method further including expanding the expandable portion so as to impede antegrade blood flow in at least a portion of the arterial system of the subject.
