Abstract

An apparatus for cone beam computed tomography can include a support structure, a scanner assembly coupled to the support structure for controlled movement in at least x, y and z orientations, the scanner assembly can include a DR detector configured to move along at least a portion of a detector path that extends at least partially around a scan volume with a distance D1 that is sufficiently long to allow the scan volume to be positioned within the detector path; a radiation source configured to move along at least a portion of a source path outside the detector path, the source path having a distance D2 greater than the distance D1, the distance D2 being sufficiently long to allow adequate radiation exposure of the scan volume for an image capture by the detector; and a first gap in the detector path.

Claims (63)

1. An imaging apparatus for cone beam computed tomography imaging of an extremity of a patient, the apparatus comprising:

a support base configured to rollably transport the imaging apparatus to an imaging location;

only one vertical support column mounted on the support base, the support column having a track formed therein;

only one vertical translation element adapted to travel inside said track to be positioned at a desired height along the vertical support column;

a forked support arm rotatably coupled to the vertical translation element, the forked support arm comprising a pair of extensions and configured to rotate about a support arm axis that intersects the vertical support column;

a scanner mounted to the pair of extensions and configured to rotate about a scanner axis that intersects each of the pair of extensions, the scanner comprising:

a housing;

a detector and a radiation source enclosed by the housing, the radiation source for directing radiation toward the detector during an imaging operation of the imaging apparatus; and

a gantry enclosed by the housing and having the detector and the radiation source mounted thereon, the gantry configured to revolve the radiation source and the detector around an imaging axis during the imaging operation of the imaging apparatus;

at least one operator control at an end of one of the pair of forked support arm extensions, the operator control configured to separately control movement of:

the vertical translation element along the track;

the forked support arm about the support arm axis; and

the scanner about the scanner axis; and

a patient support bar attached to the imaging apparatus, the patient support bar adapted to be grasped by the patient for support during the cone beam computed tomography imaging of the extremity of the patient.

2. The imaging apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the patient support bar is attached to one of either the support column, the vertical translation element, the housing of the scanner, or the forked support arm.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the patient support bar is configured to remain motionless during the cone beam computed tomography imaging of the extremity of the patient.

4. The imaging apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the gantry is configured to revolve the detector at a radial distance R1 from the imaging axis while revolving the radiation source at a radial distance R2 from the imaging axis, wherein the radial distance R2 is greater than the radial distance R1.

5. The imaging apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the gantry is configured to revolve the radiation source and the detector within the housing for more than 180 degrees around the imaging axis.

6. The imaging apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the housing comprises a C-shape thereby defining a gap in the housing to allow positioning the extremity of the patient at the imaging axis by moving the extremity of the patient through the gap in the housing.

7. The imaging apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the gantry is configured to revolve the radiation source along a radiation source path having a shape of an arc of a circle, and wherein a gap in the arc of the circle coincides with the gap in the housing.

8. The imaging apparatus of claim 7 , further comprising an extendable door configured to extend from a first portion of the housing across the gap in the housing to contact a second portion of the housing.

9. The imaging apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:

a first weight sensor at the imaging axis to support a portion of a patient positioned at the imaging axis,

a second weight sensor outside the imaging axis to support another portion of the patient positioned at the imaging axis; and

a display coupled to the first and second weight sensors, the display configured to display one or more values indicative of a weight distribution of the patient as between the first and second weight sensors.

10. An imaging apparatus for cone beam computed tomography imaging of an extremity of a patient, the apparatus comprising:

a support base comprising wheels to rollably transport the imaging apparatus to an imaging location;

only one vertical support column mounted on the support base, the support column having a track formed therein;

only one vertical translation element adapted to travel inside said track to be positioned at a desired height along the vertical support column;

a forked support arm rotatably coupled to the vertical translation element, the forked support arm comprising a pair of extensions and configured to rotate about a support arm axis that intersects the vertical support column;

a scanner mounted to the pair of extensions and configured to rotate about a scanner axis that intersects each of the pair of extensions, the scanner comprising:

a housing;

a detector and a radiation source enclosed by the housing, the radiation source for directing radiation toward the detector during an imaging operation of the imaging apparatus; and

a gantry enclosed by the housing and having the detector and the radiation source mounted thereon, the gantry configured to revolve the radiation source and the detector around an imaging axis during the imaging operation of the imaging apparatus;

at least one operator control at an end of one of the pair of forked support arm extensions, the operator control configured to separately control movement of:

the vertical translation element along the track;

the forked support about the support arm axis; and

the scanner about the scanner axis, and

wherein the gantry is configured to revolve the detector at a radial distance R1 from the imaging axis while revolving the radiation source at a radial distance R2 from the imaging axis, wherein the radial distance R2 is greater than the radial distance R1.

11. The imaging apparatus of claim 10 , further comprising a patient support bar attached to the imaging apparatus, the patient support bar adapted to be grasped by the patient for support during the imaging operation of the imaging apparatus.

12. The imaging apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the patient support bar is attached to one of either the support column, the vertical translation element, the housing of the scanner, or the forked support arm.

13. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the patient support bar is configured to remain motionless during the imaging operation of the imaging apparatus.

14. The imaging apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the gantry is configured to revolve the radiation source and the detector within the housing for more than 180 degrees around the imaging axis.

15. The imaging apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the housing comprises a C-shape thereby defining a gap in the housing to allow positioning the extremity of the patient at the imaging axis by moving the extremity of the patient through the gap in the housing.

16. The imaging apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the gantry is configured to revolve the radiation source along a radiation source path having a shape of an arc of a circle, and wherein a gap in the arc of the circle coincides with the gap in the housing.

17. The imaging apparatus of claim 16 , further comprising an extendable door configured to extend from a first portion of the housing across the gap in the housing to contact a second portion of the housing.

18. The imaging apparatus of claim 10 , further comprising:

a first weight sensor at the imaging axis to support a portion of a patient positioned at the imaging axis, a second weight sensor outside the imaging axis to support another portion of the patient positioned at the imaging axis; and

a display coupled to the first and second weight sensors, the display configured to display one or more values indicative of a weight distribution of the patient as between the first and second weight sensors.

19. An imaging apparatus for cone beam computed tomography imaging of an extremity of a patient, the apparatus comprising:

a support base configured to rollably transport the imaging apparatus to an imaging location;

only one vertical support column mounted on the support base, the support column having a track formed therein;

only one vertical translation element adapted to travel inside said track to be positioned at a desired height along the vertical support column;

a forked support arm rotatably coupled to the vertical translation element, the forked support arm comprising a pair of extensions and configured to rotate about a support arm axis α that intersects the vertical support column;

a scanner mounted to the pair of extensions and configured to rotate about a scanner axis γ, the scanner comprising:

a housing;

a detector and a radiation source enclosed by the housing, the radiation source for directing radiation toward the detector during an imaging operation of the imaging apparatus; and

a gantry enclosed by the housing and having the detector and the radiation source mounted thereon, the gantry configured to revolve the radiation source and the detector around an imaging axis β during the imaging operation of the imaging apparatus, wherein the imaging axis β remains perpendicular to the scanner axis γ at all rotational positions of the scanner about the scanner axis γ; and

a patient support bar attached to the imaging apparatus, the patient support bar adapted to be grasped by the patient for support during the cone beam computed tomography imaging of the extremity of the patient.

20. The imaging apparatus of claim 19 , further comprising at least one operator control at an end of one of the pair of forked support arm extensions, the operator control configured to separately control movement of:

the vertical translation element along the track;

the forked support arm about the support arm axis α; and

the scanner about the scanner axis γ.
