Abstract

A coated article includes a substrate, a first dielectric layer, a subcritical metallic layer having discontinuous metallic regions, a primer over the subcritical layer, and a second dielectric layer over the primer layer. The primer can be a nickel-chromium alloy. The primer can be a multilayer primer having a first layer of a nickel-chromium alloy and a second layer of titania.

Claims (25)

1. A coated article having a tinted appearance in

reflection and/or transmission, consisting of:

a substrate;

a first dielectric layer;

a subcritical metallic layer having discontinuous metallic regions and having a thickness in a range of 5 Å to 50 Å; and

a second dielectric layer over the subcritical metallic layer;

wherein the subcritical metallic layer consists of silver.

2. The article of claim 1 , wherein the second dielectric layer comprises one or more layers selected from zinc-tin oxides, zinc oxide, silicon-aluminum oxides, silicon-aluminum nitrides, titanium oxides, and titanium nitrides.

3. The article of claim 2 , wherein the second dielectric layer comprises zinc-tin oxides, zinc oxide, or combinations thereof.

4. The article of claim 1 , wherein the substrate is a glass substrate.

5. The article of claim 1 , wherein the subcritical metallic layer has a thickness in a range of 20 Å to 30 Å.

6. A coated article having a tinted appearance in reflection and/or transmission, consisting of:

a substrate;

a first dielectric layer;

a subcritical metallic layer having discontinuous metallic regions and having a thickness in a range of 5 Å to 50 Å;

a primer and

a second dielectric layer;

wherein the subcritical metallic layer consists of silver.

7. The article of claim 6 , wherein the second dielectric layer comprises one or more layers selected from zinc-tin oxides, zinc oxide, silicon-aluminum oxides, silicon-aluminum nitrides, titanium oxides, and titanium nitrides.

8. The article of claim 7 , wherein the second dielectric layer comprises zinc-tin oxides, zinc oxide, or combinations thereof.

9. The article of claim 6 , wherein the substrate is a glass substrate.

10. The article of claim 6 , wherein the primer comprises one or more layers selected from titanium, silicon, silicon dioxide, silicon nitride, silicon oxynitride, nickel-chromium alloys, zirconium, aluminum, alloys of silicon and aluminum, and alloys containing cobalt and chromium.

11. The article of claim 10 , wherein the primer comprises titanium.

12. The article of claim 10 , wherein the primer comprises a nickel-chromium alloy.

13. The article of claim 6 , wherein the subcritical metallic layer has a thickness in a range of 20 Å to 30 Å.
