Abstract

Software and lasers are used in finishing apparel to produce a desired wear pattern or other design. A technique includes determining a fabric's response to a laser, capturing an initial image of a wear pattern on a garment, and processing the initial image to obtain a working image in grayscale. The working image is further processed to obtain a difference image by comparing each pixel relative to a dark reference. The difference image is converted to a laser values image by using the previously determined fabric response to the laser.

Claims (84)

1. A method comprising:

forming a first pattern on a surface of a target fabric material, wherein the first pattern comprises a plurality of color shades, the color shades are lighter shades relative to an original color of the target fabric material, and the first pattern is formed by exposing the target fabric material to a laser beam at a variety of laser levels;

from the first pattern created by a laser, obtaining a fabric response characteristic for the target fabric material in response to the laser;

providing a first garment having a preexisting finishing pattern;

from the first garment having a preexisting finishing pattern, obtaining a first image representative of the preexisting finishing pattern;

from the first image, obtaining a second image representative of the preexisting finishing pattern, wherein the second image comprises a reverse image, compared to the first image;

using the second image and the fabric response characteristic, creating a laser values input file; and

forming a second pattern on a surface of a second garment, wherein the second garment is made of the target fabric material, and the second pattern is formed by exposing the second garment to a laser beam controlled by the laser values input file.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the second garment comprises an assembled garment comprising fabric panels of the target fabric material sewn together with thread.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the target fabric material comprises a denim material.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the target fabric material comprises woven indigo ring-dyed cotton yarn.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the obtaining a second image representative of the preexisting finishing pattern comprises:

selecting a dark reference in the first image;

for each pixel in the first image, calculating a difference value between a pixel value and the dark reference; and

storing each difference value in the second image.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the laser levels are obtained by varying an output of the laser beam by altering a characteristic of a laser waveform comprising at least one of a frequency, period, pulse width, power, duty cycle, or burning speed.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the forming a second pattern on a surface of a second garment comprises a single pass of the laser.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the forming a second pattern on a surface of a second garment comprises multiple passes of the laser.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the second garment comprises denim jeans.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein the first pattern is different from the second pattern.

11. The method of claim 1 wherein the first pattern comprises a first region comprising a first shade, a second region comprising a second shade, and a third region comprising a third shade, each first, second, and third regions comprise the same polygon shape, and

a difference between the first shade and second shade is determined by a first incremental value in a laser input value, a difference between the second shade and third shade is determined by a second incremental value in the laser input value, and the second incremental value is the same as the first incremental value.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein the obtaining a fabric response characteristic for the target fabric material in response to the laser comprises:

for the first region, generating a first histogram for a distribution of pixels in the first region;

for the second region, generating a second histogram for a distribution of pixels in the second region; and

for the third region, generating a third histogram for a distribution of pixels in the third region.

13. The method of claim 1 wherein the obtaining a first image representative of the preexisting finishing pattern comprises using contrast limited adaptive histogram equalization image processing.

14. A method comprising:

forming a first pattern on a surface of a target fabric material, wherein the first pattern comprises a plurality of color shades, the color shades are lighter shades relative to an original color of the target fabric material, and the first pattern is formed by exposing the target fabric material to a laser beam at a variety of laser levels;

from the first pattern created by a laser, obtaining a fabric response characteristic for the target fabric material in response to the laser, wherein the first pattern comprises a first region comprising a first shade, a second region comprising a second shade, and a third region comprising a third shade, each first, second, and third regions comprise the same polygon shape, and

a difference between the first shade and second shade is determined by a first incremental value in a laser input value, a difference between the second shade and third shade is determined by a second incremental value in the laser input value, and the second incremental value is the same as the first incremental value;

providing a first garment having a preexisting finishing pattern;

from the first garment having a preexisting finishing pattern, obtaining a first image representative of the preexisting finishing pattern;

from the first image, obtaining a second image representative of the preexisting finishing pattern, wherein the second image comprises a reverse image, compared to the first image, wherein the obtaining a second image comprises

selecting a dark reference in the first image,

for each pixel in the first image, calculating a difference value between a pixel value and the dark reference, and

storing each difference value in the second image;

using the second image and the fabric response characteristic, creating a laser values input file; and

forming a second pattern on a surface of a second garment, wherein the second garment comprises an assembled garment comprising fabric panels of the target fabric material sewn together with thread, the second garment is made of the target fabric material, and the second pattern is formed by exposing the second garment to a laser beam controlled by the laser values input file.

15. The method of claim 1 wherein the preexisting finishing pattern comprises a vintage wear pattern, and the second pattern comprises a reproduction of the vintage wear pattern from the preexisting finishing pattern on the target fabric material.

16. The method of claim 1 wherein the second pattern comprises at least one wear pattern feature of the preexisting finishing pattern.

17. The method of claim 1 wherein the second pattern comprises at least one feature of the preexisting finishing pattern.

18. The method of claim 1 wherein the target fabric material comprises a twill material.

19. The method of claim 1 wherein the first garment is made of a broken twill material.

20. The method of claim 1 wherein the target fabric material comprises warp yarn comprising indigo ring-dyed cotton yarn and undyed weft yarn.

21. The method of claim 1 wherein before exposure to the laser, the second garment does not have a finishing pattern.

22. The method of claim 1 wherein the second pattern is formed on the surface of the target fabric material of the second garment by using the laser to remove selected amounts of material from the surface of the target fabric material of the second garment based on the laser values input file.

23. The method of claim 14 wherein the preexisting finishing pattern comprises a vintage wear pattern, and the second pattern comprises a reproduction of the vintage wear pattern from the preexisting finishing pattern on the target fabric material.

24. The method of claim 14 wherein the second pattern comprises at least one wear pattern feature of the preexisting finishing pattern.

25. The method of claim 14 wherein the second pattern comprises at least one feature of the preexisting finishing pattern.

26. The method of claim 14 wherein the target fabric material comprises a twill material.

27. The method of claim 14 wherein the first garment is made of a broken twill material.

28. A method comprising:

forming a first pattern on a surface of a target fabric material, wherein the first pattern comprises a plurality of color shades, the color shades are lighter shades relative to an original color of the target fabric material, the first pattern is formed by exposing the target fabric material to a laser beam at a variety of laser levels, and the laser levels are obtained by varying an output of the laser beam by altering a characteristic of a laser waveform comprising at least one of a frequency, period, pulse width, power, duty cycle, or burning speed;

from the first pattern created by a laser, obtaining a fabric response characteristic for the target fabric material in response to the laser;

providing a first garment having a preexisting finishing pattern;

from the first garment having a preexisting finishing pattern, obtaining a first image representative of the preexisting finishing pattern;

from the first image, obtaining a second image representative of the preexisting finishing pattern, wherein the second image comprises a reverse image, compared to the first image;

using the second image and the fabric response characteristic, creating a laser values input file; and

forming a second pattern on a surface of a second garment, wherein the second garment is made of the target fabric material, the second pattern is formed by exposing the second garment to a laser beam controlled by the laser values input file, and the second pattern comprises at least one wear pattern feature from the preexisting finishing pattern.

29. The method of claim 28 wherein the second garment comprises an assembled garment comprising fabric panels of the target fabric material sewn together with thread.

30. The method of claim 28 wherein the target fabric material comprises a denim material.

31. The method of claim 28 wherein the target fabric material comprises woven indigo ring-dyed cotton yarn.

32. The method of claim 28 wherein the obtaining a second image representative of the preexisting finishing pattern comprises:

selecting a dark reference in the first image;

for each pixel in the first image, calculating a difference value between a pixel value and the dark reference; and

storing each difference value in the second image.

33. The method of claim 14 wherein the laser levels are obtained by varying an output of the laser beam by altering a characteristic of a laser waveform comprising at least one of a frequency, period, pulse width, power, duty cycle, or burning speed.

34. The method of claim 28 wherein the forming a second pattern on a surface of a second garment comprises a single pass of the laser.

35. The method of claim 28 wherein the forming a second pattern on a surface of a second garment comprises multiple passes of the laser.

36. The method of claim 28 wherein the second garment comprises denim jeans.

37. The method of claim 28 wherein the first pattern is different from the second pattern.

38. The method of claim 28 wherein the first pattern comprises a first region comprising a first shade, a second region comprising a second shade, and a third region comprising a third shade, each first, second, and third regions comprise the same polygon shape, and

a difference between the first shade and second shade is determined by a first incremental value in a laser input value, a difference between the second shade and third shade is determined by a second incremental value in the laser input value, and the second incremental value is the same as the first incremental value.

39. The method of claim 28 wherein the obtaining a fabric response characteristic for the target fabric material in response to the laser comprises:

for the first region, generating a first histogram for a distribution of pixels in the first region;

for the second region, generating a second histogram for a distribution of pixels in the second region; and

for the third region, generating a third histogram for a distribution of pixels in the third region.

40. The method of claim 28 wherein the obtaining a first image representative of the preexisting finishing pattern comprises using contrast limited adaptive histogram equalization image processing.

41. The method of claim 28 wherein the target fabric material comprises a twill material.

42. The method of claim 28 wherein the first garment is made of a broken twill material.

43. The method of claim 28 wherein the target fabric material comprises warp yarn comprising indigo ring-dyed cotton yarn and undyed weft yarn.

44. The method of claim 28 wherein before exposure to the laser, the second garment does not have a finishing pattern.

45. The method of claim 28 wherein the second pattern is formed on the surface of the target fabric material of the second garment by using the laser to remove selected amounts of material from the surface of the target fabric material of the second garment based on the laser values input file.
