Abstract

In an access device associated with a first network cell, a method for enabling user equipment (UE) to obtain a service unavailable through the first network cell includes receiving a request for the UE to access the service, and identifying, in a message to the UE, a plurality of second network cells providing the service.

Claims (35)

1. A method in an evolved node B (eNB) of an evolved universal terrestrial radio access network (E-UTRAN) for enabling a user equipment (UE) to obtain a circuit-switched (CS) voice service unavailable through a first network cell operated by the eNB, the eNB connected to a Mobility Management Entity (MME), the method comprising:

receiving a radio resource control (RRC) connection setup complete message from the UE, wherein the RRC connection setup complete message comprises a Non-Access Stratum (NAS) extended service request indicating a request for the CS voice service;

forwarding the NAS extended service request to the MME;

transmitting a message to release an RRC connection with the UE;

identifying, within the message to release the RRC connection, a plurality of target General Packet Radio Service (GPRS)/Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) Radio Access Network (GERAN) or Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN) cells that support the CS voice service; and

wherein the message to release the RRC connection further includes at least one system information block (SIB) for each of the plurality of identified target cells, the at least one SIB comprising information to enable the UE to initiate a connection for the CS voice service in the respective identified target cell.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one SIB includes system information that is broadcasted by the respective identified target cell.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the message to release the RRC connection is transmitted in response to receiving the RRC connection setup complete message.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one SIB includes a location area of the respective identified target cell.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the eNB provides only packet-switched (PS) domain services.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the message to release the RRC connection comprises an RRC Connection Release message.

7. An evolved node B (eNB), comprising:

at least one hardware processor; and

a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium coupled to the at least one hardware processor and storing programming instructions for execution by the at least one hardware processor, wherein the programming instructions, when executed, cause the at least one hardware processor to perform operations comprising:

receiving a radio resource control (RRC) connection setup complete message from a user equipment (UE), wherein the RRC connection setup complete message comprises a Non-Access Stratum (NAS) extended service request indicating a request for a circuit-switched (CS) voice service unavailable through a first network cell operated by the eNB;

forwarding the NAS extended service request to a Mobility Management Entity (MME) that is connected with the eNB;

transmitting a message to release an RRC connection with the UE;

identifying, within the message to release the RRC connection, a plurality of target General Packet Radio Service (GPRS)/Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) Radio Access Network (GERAN) or Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN) cells that support the CS voice service; and

wherein the message to release the RRC connection further includes at least one system information block (SIB) for each of the plurality of identified target cells, the at least one SIB comprising information to enable the UE to initiate a connection for the CS voice service in the respective identified target cell.

8. The eNB of claim 7 , wherein the at least one SIB includes system information that is broadcasted by the respective identified target cell.

9. The eNB of claim 7 , wherein the message to release the RRC connection is transmitted in response to receiving the RRC connection setup complete message.

10. The eNB of claim 7 , wherein the at least one SIB includes a location area of the respective identified target cell.

11. The eNB of claim 7 , wherein the eNB provides only packet-switched (PS) domain services.

12. The eNB of claim 7 , wherein the message to release the RRC connection comprises an RRC Connection Release message.

13. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions which, when executed, cause a computing device to perform operations comprising:

receiving, at an evolved node B (eNB), a radio resource control (RRC) connection setup complete message from a user equipment (UE), wherein the RRC connection setup complete message comprises a Non-Access Stratum (NAS) extended service request indicating a request for a circuit-switched (CS) voice service unavailable through a first network cell operated by the eNB;

forwarding the NAS extended service request to a Mobility Management Entity (MME) that is connected with the eNB;

transmitting a message to release an RRC connection with the UE;

identifying, within the message to release the RRC connection, a plurality of target General Packet Radio Service (GPRS)/Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) Radio Access Network (GERAN) or Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN) cells that support the CS voice service; and

wherein the message to release the RRC connection further includes at least one system information block (SIB) for each of the plurality of identified target cells, the at least one SIB comprising information to enable the UE to initiate a connection for the CS voice service in the respective identified target cell.

14. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the at least one SIB includes system information that is broadcasted by the respective identified target cell.

15. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the message to release the RRC connection is transmitted in response to receiving the RRC connection setup complete message.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the at least one SIB includes a location area of the respective identified target cell.

17. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the eNB provides only packet-switched (PS) domain services.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the message to release the RRC connection comprises an RRC Connection Release message.
