Systems for distracting uncinate joints
View Patent ↗A system for distracting uncinate joints of a cervical spine segment includes two tapered elements and an actuator configured to couple with the tapered elements and change distance between the tapered elements, to insert the tapered elements into the uncinate joints, respectively, from the intervertebral disc space of the cervical spine segment.
1. A system for distracting uncinate joints of a cervical spine segment, comprising:
two tapered elements; and
an actuator configured to couple with the tapered elements and change distance between the tapered elements, to insert the tapered elements into the uncinate joints, respectively, from an intervertebral disc space of the cervical spine segment, to fully seat the tapered elements in the respective uncinate joints.

The system of claim 1 , each of the tapered elements being elongated in a lengthwise dimension and having height in a heightwise dimension orthogonal to the lengthwise dimension, the height having a gradient in a widthwise dimension orthogonal to the lengthwise and heightwise dimensions to define tapering of the tapered element.

The system of claim 2 , further comprising two extensions for extending the tapered elements, respectively, along the lengthwise dimension, each extension having length sufficient to protrude in anterior direction from the respective uncinate joint, the actuator being coupled to the tapered elements via the extensions.
4. The system of claim 3 , each extension being removably coupled with the respective tapered element.
5. The system of claim 1 , each tapered element including polymer.
6. The system of claim 5 , each tapered element including at least one portion for contacting surfaces of the respective uncinate joint, the portion being composed of polymer.
7. The system of claim 1 , the tapered elements tapering away from each other when coupled with the actuator, such that the height of each tapered element decreases in direction away from the other tapered element.
8. The system of claim 7 , each tapered element tapering from height less than one millimeter to height no greater than six millimeters.
9. The system of claim 7 , each tapered element tapering from height less than two millimeters to height greater than two millimeters.
10. The system of claim 7 , each tapered element including features protruding from the tapered element for temporarily securing the tapered elements to the uncinate joints.
11. The system of claim 1 , further including a coupling mechanism for coupling and uncoupling the actuator with the tapered elements.
12. The system of claim 1 , the actuator including:
two connecting members for mechanically coupling with the tapered elements, respectively;
two handles for actuating the actuator; and
a hinge, coupled with the connecting members and the handles, for translating action of the handles to the connecting members.
13. The system of claim 12 , the hinge being configured for reverse scissor action.
14. The system of claim 12 , the hinge being configured for scissor action.
15. The system of claim 1 , further comprising an indicator for indicating separation between the tapered elements when coupled with the actuator.
