Abstract

In one implementation, an insulin delivery system using an on-body network includes an insulin delivery device that is adapted to administer dosages of insulin to a patient; a controller that is adapted to control operation of the insulin delivery device, to establish a first network connection in which the controller acts in a central role, and to establish a second network connection in which the controller acts in a peripheral role; one or more peripheral devices that are adapted to generate patient data related to blood glucose levels and to transmit the patient data wirelessly over the first network connection, the peripheral devices acting in a peripheral role over the first network connection; and a mobile application installed on a mobile computing device that is programmed to communicate with the controller over the second network connection, the mobile application communicating in a central role over the second network connection.

establishing, using the chipset, a second network connection with the mobile computing device, the mobile computing device running a mobile application, wherein the mobile application is executed by the mobile computing device;

receiving, via the first network connection, patient data related to blood glucose levels from the peripheral device;

transmitting, via the second network connection, the patient data related to blood glucose levels to the mobile computing device;

receiving, from the mobile computing device via the second network connection, an instruction to administer an insulin dosage, wherein the instruction to administer the insulin dosage is initiated by the mobile application running on the mobile computing device, and wherein the insulin dosage is based at least in part on a patient dosing model that has been adjusted using the patient data related to blood glucose levels transmitted to the mobile computing device; and

transmitting, to the mobile computing device via the second network connection, a communication verifying that the administration of the insulin dosage has been completed.

2. The controller of claim 1 , wherein:

the first network connection comprises a first connection;

the second network connection comprises a second connection; and

the chipset comprises a single chipset and an interface over which the first connection and the second connection are provided.

3. The controller of claim 1 , wherein the performed operations further comprise:

receiving, via the second network connection, operating instructions from the mobile computing device; and

operating the insulin delivery device according to the operating instructions received from the mobile computing device.

4. The controller of claim 1 , wherein: in the first network connection with the peripheral device, the controller is configured to assumes a central role and the peripheral device is configured to assume a peripheral role; and in the second network connection, the controller is configured to assume the peripheral role and the mobile computing device is configured to assume the central role.

5. The controller of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to maintain a list of approved or verified devices for pairing, the list established and verified through communication with a remote server system via the mobile computing device.

6. The controller of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to, after the second network connection with the mobile computing device drops off and is subsequently reestablished, synchronize a state of the controller with a state of the mobile computing device before performing additional operations.

7. The controller of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of other devices includes multiple peripheral devices including the peripheral device, and wherein the controller is configured to connect to one of the multiple peripheral devices at a time.

8. The controller of claim 7 , wherein the controller is configured to periodically connect to a respective peripheral device of the multiple peripheral devices, obtain data from the respective peripheral device of the multiple peripheral devices, and disconnect from the respective peripheral device of the multiple peripheral devices.

9. The controller of claim 1 , wherein the first and second network connections are established using a first wireless communications protocol and wherein the performed operations further comprise:

receiving, from the peripheral device and via a second wireless communications protocol, pairing information for establishing the first network connection, the second wireless communications protocol being different from the first wireless communications protocol;

wherein establishing the first network connection with the peripheral device includes using the pairing information to establish the first network connection with the peripheral device.

10. The controller of claim 9 , further comprising:

an additional chipset for receiving the pairing information from the peripheral device via the second wireless communications protocol.

11. The controller of claim 9 , wherein the second wireless communications protocol is a near field communications (NFC) communication protocol.

12. The controller of claim 11 , further comprising:

an NFC reader for receiving NFC communications from an NFC tag of the peripheral device.

13. A method to be performed by a controller of an insulin delivery system, the method comprising:

establishing, using a first chipset, a first network connection with a peripheral device;

establishing, using the first chipset, a second network connection with a mobile computing device running a mobile application, wherein the mobile application is executed by the mobile computing device;

receiving, via the first network connection, patient data related to blood glucose levels from the peripheral device;

transmitting, via the second network connection, the patient data related to blood glucose levels to the mobile computing device;

receiving, from the mobile computing device via the second network connection, an instruction to administer an insulin dosage, wherein the instruction to administer the insulin dosage is initiated by the mobile application running on the mobile computing device, and wherein the insulin dosage is based at least in part on a patient dosing model that has been adjusted using the patient data transmitted to the mobile computing device; and

transmitting, to the mobile computing device via the second network connection, a communication verifying that the administration of the insulin dosage has been completed.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein:

the first network connection comprises a first connection;

the second network connection comprises a second connection; and
