Abstract

Among other things, a vehicle having autonomous driving capabilities is operated in a mixed driving mode.

Claims (38)

1 - 30 . (canceled)

31 . A method comprising:

receiving sensor information from one or more sensors from a vehicle comprising an autonomous driving capability, the sensor information indicating at least one of properties associated with a state or a condition of the vehicle, properties associated with a driving environment of the vehicle, or a state of occupancy of the vehicle;

receiving a request for a driving mode transition for the vehicle from a first driving mode to a next driving mode following the first driving mode;

determining, based on the received sensor information, a smoothing operation for the driving mode transition; and

initiating, based on the determined smoothing operation, the driving mode transition for the vehicle from the first driving mode to the next driving mode.

32 . The method of claim 31 , wherein the determined smoothing operation comprises smoothing a change in speed of the vehicle during the driving mode transition from the first driving mode to the next driving mode.

33 . The method of claim 31 , wherein initiating the driving mode transition for the vehicle from the first driving mode to the next driving mode comprises evaluating a trajectory towards a goal position under the next driving mode.

34 . The method of claim 31 , wherein initiating the driving mode transition for the vehicle from the first driving mode to the next driving mode comprises sending a recommendation for the next driving mode to one or more occupants in the vehicle.

35 . The method of claim 31 , wherein initiating the driving mode transition for the vehicle from the first driving mode to the next driving mode comprises inferring one or more intermediate driving modes between the first driving mode and the next driving mode.

36 . The method of claim 31 , wherein initiating the driving mode transition for the vehicle from the first driving mode to the next driving mode comprises using a probabilistic model to optimally determine the next driving mode.

37 . The method of claim 31 , wherein the first driving mode is a manual driving mode, the method further comprising:

determining, based on the sensor information, that a driver of the vehicle has an impaired ability to manually drive;

generating a request for a driving mode transition for the vehicle from the manual driving mode to a fully autonomous driving mode; and

initiating, based on the determined smoothing operation, the driving mode transition for the vehicle from the manual driving mode to the fully autonomous driving mode.

38 . The method of claim 31 , further comprising obtaining additional information indicating information associated with one or more occupants in the vehicle, wherein the additional information is not obtained from the one or more sensors.

39 . The method of claim 38 , wherein determining a smoothing operation for the driving mode transition is based on the received additional information.

40 . The method of claim 38 , wherein the additional information comprises an identity of the one or more of the occupants.

41 . The method of claim 38 , wherein the additional information comprises authentication of the one or more occupants, wherein initiating the driving mode transition for the vehicle from the first driving mode to the next driving mode comprises evaluating the authentication of the one or more occupants with respect to the next driving mode.

42 . The method of claim 41 , wherein receiving the request for a driving mode transition for the vehicle from the first driving mode to the next driving mode is in accordance with instructions from a remote operator to cause the vehicle to transition.

43 . The method of claim 41 , wherein the first driving mode comprises an autonomous driving mode and the next driving mode comprises a manual driving mode.

44 . The method of claim 31 , wherein the first driving mode comprises a manual driving mode and the next driving mode comprises an autonomous driving mode.

45 . The method of claim 31 , wherein the first driving mode comprises a manual driving mode and the next driving mode comprises a paused driving mode.

46 . The method of claim 31 , wherein the first driving mode comprises a manual driving mode and the next driving mode comprises a disabled driving mode.

47 . The method of claim 31 , wherein the sensor information further indicates a physical condition of one or more of the occupants in the vehicle.

48 . The method of claim 47 , wherein the physical condition comprises a condition requiring emergency medical care.

49 . An apparatus comprising:

one or more processors; and

a memory storage in data communication with the one or more processors, the memory storage storing instructions executable by the one or more processors and that upon such execution cause the one or more processors to perform operations of:

receiving sensor information from one or more sensors from a vehicle comprising an autonomous driving capability, the sensor information indicating at least one of properties associated with a state or a condition of the vehicle, properties associated with a driving environment of the vehicle, or a state of occupancy of the vehicle;

receiving a request for a driving mode transition for the vehicle from a first driving mode to a next driving mode following the first driving mode;

determining, based on the received sensor information, a smoothing operation for the driving mode transition; and

initiating, based on the determined smoothing operation, the driving mode transition for the vehicle from the first driving mode to the next driving mode.

50 . A non-transitory computer storage medium encoded with a computer program, the program comprising instructions that when executed by data processing apparatus cause the data processing apparatus to perform operations of:

receiving sensor information from one or more sensors from a vehicle comprising an autonomous driving capability, the sensor information indicating at least one of properties associated with a state or a condition of the vehicle, properties associated with a driving environment of the vehicle, or a state of occupancy of the vehicle;

receiving a request for a driving mode transition for the vehicle from a first driving mode to a next driving mode following the first driving mode;

determining, based on the received sensor information, a smoothing operation for the driving mode transition; and

initiating, based on the determined smoothing operation, the driving mode transition for the vehicle from the first driving mode to the next driving mode.
