Abstract

Techniques to dynamically engage an all-intra-coded mode for streaming video encoding are described. In one embodiment, an apparatus may comprise an encoding configuration component operative to receive network performance information for a video stream at a sending device; and assign an all-intra-coded mode to a media component based on the network performance information; the media component operative to generate the video stream in the all-intra-coded mode, wherein the video stream uses exclusively intra-coded frames in the all-intra-coded mode; and a network component operative to send the video stream from the sending device to a receiving device using the all-intra-coded mode. Other embodiments are described and claimed.

6 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 1 , the video stream comprising a plurality of video frames, wherein each of the plurality of video frames is no more than a maximum transfer unit in size for a network connection used in sending the video stream from the sending device to the receiving device, comprising further instructions that, when executed, cause a system to:

7 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 1 , the video stream comprising a plurality of video frames, wherein each of the plurality of video frames is no more than twice a maximum transfer unit in size for a network connection used in sending the video stream from the sending device to the receiving device, comprising further instructions that, when executed, cause a system to:

9 . An apparatus, comprising:

an encoding configuration component operative to:

receive network performance information for a video stream at a sending device, the network performance information including metrics associated with the transmission or reception of the video stream; and

activate an all-intra-coded mode for a media component based on the network performance information;

the media component operative to encode the video stream using exclusively intra-coded frames in the all-intra-coded mode for playback in normal playback mode at a receiving device; and

a network component operative to send the video stream encoded in all-intra-coded mode from the sending device to a receiving device.

10 . The apparatus of claim 9 , further comprising:

the media component operative to encode the video stream in the all-intra-coded mode where the network performance information indicates a packet loss rate above a predefined packet loss threshold.

11 . The apparatus of claim 10 , further comprising:

12 . The apparatus of claim 9 , the video stream comprising a plurality of video frames, further comprising:

the encoding configuration component operative to activate the all-intra-coded mode where each of the plurality of video frames of the video stream can be fit into individual network packets.
