Abstract

A laterally movable carrier is associated with a row frame. The carrier is connected to a frame member, an opener, a first outlet and a second outlet to allow for dynamically variable adjustment of the lateral separation between a first row of planted seed and a second row of planted seed, where the first row of seed is adjacent to the second row of seed.

Claims (44)

1. An implement system comprising:

a row frame for coupling to a rear member;

a frame member;

an opener for opening the soil; the opener supported by or from a support extending downward from the frame member;

a first outlet for dispensing or applying a nutrient strip;

a second outlet for dispensing or planting seed, wherein the first outlet and the second outlet have a lateral separation that is fixed during the simultaneous application of seed and nutrients;

a laterally movable carrier associated with the row frame, the carrier connected to the frame member, the opener, the first outlet and the second outlet to allow for dynamically variable adjustment of the lateral separation between a first row of planted seed and a second row of planted seed, where the first row of seed is adjacent to the second row of seed; and

a lateral actuator for lateral movement or adjustment of the carrier in response to control signals provided by an implement data processor or an implement guidance module in response to observed seed metering rate within a seed row.

2. The implement according to claim 1 further comprising:

a downforce actuator for adjusting a vertical height of the opener or another ground-engaging element with respect to the implement or a ground level, the downforce actuator mounted between a linkage member and the frame member, wherein the linkage member supports vertical movement of the opener with respect to the carrier.

3. The implement system according to claim 1 further comprising:

a second lateral actuator for lateral movement or adjustment of the carrier for the second row in response to control signals provided by an implement data processor or an implement guidance module in response to observed seed metering rate within the first seed row.

4. The implement system according to claim 1 wherein:

the lateral actuator comprises an electric motor or a linear actuator that laterally moves the carrier via drive member.

5. The implement system according to claim 4 wherein the drive member is a threaded rod or a rack gear.

6. The implement system according to claim 5 further comprising a guide for supporting sliding movement of the carrier.

7. The implement system according to claim 1 further comprising a lateral position sensor, wherein the lateral position sensor comprises a magnet on or in the carrier and a magnetic field sensor associated with the row frame.

8. The implement system according to claim 1 further comprising;

a closer for covering the dispensed seed and the applied nutrient with the soil.

9. The implement system according to claim 1 further comprising an implement location-determining receiver for determining a position of the implement.

10. The implement system according to claim 1 further comprising a seed metering device for determining an observed seed density or observed seed spacing of seeds in a row.

11. The implement system according to claim 10 wherein the implement data processor varies the lateral separation between a first seed row of planted seed and a second seed row based on the seed density of the first seed row from the observed seed density or the observed seed spacing.

12. The implement system according to claim 1 wherein the implement data processor decreases the lateral separation between the first seed row of planted seed and the second seed row for an increased seed density or a maximum seed density associated with a particular respective position, zone or region in the first seed row and the second seed row, collectively.

13. The implement system according to claim 1 wherein the implement data processor increases the lateral separation between the first seed row of planted seed and the second seed row for a decreased seed density or a minimum seed density associated with a particular respective position, zone or region in the first seed row and the second seed row, collectively.

14. The implement system according to claim 1 wherein the implement data processor limits the lateral separation between the first seed row of planted seed and the second seed row based on a plurality of row spacing limits associated with a harvester or a combine for harvesting crop resulting from the planted seed rows.

15. An implement system comprising:

a row frame for coupling to a rear member;

a frame member;

an opener for opening the soil; the opener supported by or from a support extending downward from the frame member;

a first outlet for dispensing or applying a nutrient strip;

a second outlet for dispensing or planting seed, wherein the first outlet and the second outlet have a lateral separation that is fixed during the simultaneous application of seed and nutrients;

a laterally movable carrier associated with the row frame, the carrier connected to the frame member, the opener, the first outlet and the second outlet to allow for dynamically variable adjustment of the lateral separation between a first row of planted seed and a second row of planted seed, where the first row of seed is adjacent to the second row of seed; and

a seeding unit for determining, or metering, an observed seed density or observed seed spacing of seeds in a row; wherein the implement data processor varies the lateral separation between a first seed row of planted seed and a second seed row based on the seed density of the first seed row from the observed seed density or the observed seed spacing.

16. The implement system according to claim 15 wherein the implement data processor decreases the lateral separation between the first seed row of planted seed and the second seed row for an increased seed density or a maximum seed density associated with a particular respective position, zone or region in the first seed row and the second seed row, collectively.

17. The implement system according to claim 15 wherein the implement data processor increases the lateral separation between the first seed row of planted seed and the second seed row for a decreased seed density or a minimum seed density associated with a particular respective position, zone or region in the first seed row and the second seed row, collectively.

18. The implement system according to claim 15 wherein the implement data processor limits the lateral separation between the first seed row of planted seed and the second seed row based on a plurality of row spacing limits associated with a harvester or a combine for harvesting crop resulting from the planted seed rows.

19. An implement system comprising:

a row frame for coupling to a rear member;

a frame member;

an opener for opening the soil; the opener supported by or from a support extending downward from the frame member;

a first outlet for dispensing or applying a nutrient strip;
