Compounds derived from herbicidal carboxylic acids and tetraalkylammonium or (arylalkyl)trialkylammonium hydroxides
View Patent ↗Compounds formed by combining a carboxylic acid herbicide with N—((C 1 -C 16 ) alkyl or arylalkyl) tri((C 1 -C 16 ) alkyl)ammonium hydroxide have herbicidal activity on an acid equivalent basis at least as active as the commercially used carboxylic acid herbicide salts, but are less volatile.
1. A herbicidal compound comprising the reaction product of a herbicidal carboxylic acid and a (tetraalkyl) ammonium hydroxide.
2. The herbicidal compound of claim 1 in which the herbicidal carboxylic acid is 2,4-D, triclopyr, aminopyralid, clopyralid, fluroxypyr, picloram, cyhalofop, fluazifop, haloxyfop, clodinafop, fenoxaprop, dicamba, glufosinate or glyphosate.
3. The herbicidal compound of claim 2 in which the herbicidal carboxylic acid is 2,4-D, triclopyr or dicamba.
4. The herbicidal compound of claim 1 in which the (tetraalkyl)ammonium hydroxide is a compound of the formula
wherein R 1 , R 2 and R 3 independently represents (C 1 -C 16 ) alkyl or any two of R 1 , R 2 and R 3 represent —(CH 2 ) n — where n is an integer from 3-5 and R 4 represents ((C 1 -C 16 ) alkyl or arylalkyl).
5. The herbicidal compound of claim 4 in which R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are the same.
6. The herbicidal compound of claim 4 in which R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are CH 3 and R 4 is (C 2 -C 16 ) alkyl or arylalkyl.
7. The herbicidal compound of claim 6 in which R 4 is benzyl or hexadecyl.
8. The herbicidal compound of claim 5 in which R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are all methyl, ethyl, propyl or, butyl.
9. The herbicidal composition comprising the herbicidally effective amount of the herbicidal compound of claim 1 , in admixture with an agriculturally acceptable adjuvant or carrier.
10. A method of controlling undesirable vegetation which comprises contacting the vegetation or the locus thereof with, or applying to the soil to prevent the emergence of vegetation, a herbicidally effective amount of the herbicidal compound of claim 1 .
