Abstract

The subject invention relates to novel micoparticulate and soluble forms of flavonoids, and their synthesis. The invention also includes novel formulations of such flavonoids. Further, the invention includes novel methods of manufacturing the flavonoid formulations. The invention also relates to a wide variety of applications of the flavonoid formulations.

Claims (7)

1. A method of forming a topical formulation of apigenin comprising:

mixing apigenin with an alkali metal hydroxide in water to form an alkali metal apigenin salt solution for a first duration of mixing time;

adding the alkali metal apigenin salt solution to a dermatologically acceptable carrier selected from the group consisting of ethanol, isopropanol, benzyl alcohol, glycol, oils, glycerol, fatty acid esters, dimethyl isosorbide, and combinations thereof,

after the first step, adjusting a pH of the formulation with an acid to 4 to 8 for a second duration of precipitation time,

wherein the adjusting the pH step produces apigenin nanofibers having an average size of 50-1000 nanometers and an aspect ratio measuring greater than 20, and

wherein a ratio of the first duration of mixing time to the second duration of precipitation time is 1:1 to 1:5.

2. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the ratio of the first duration of mixing time to the second duration of precipitation time is 1:1 to 1:2.
