Abstract

A physiological sensor has light emitting sources, each activated by addressing at least one row and at least one column of an electrical grid. The light emitting sources are capable of transmitting light of multiple wavelengths and a detector is responsive to the transmitted light after attenuation by body tissue.

1. A physiological sensor comprising:

a plurality of light emitting sources arranged as first elements of a plurality of elements in an electrical grid, the electrical grid comprising a plurality of rows and a plurality of columns;

a detector responsive to light emitted by at least one of the plurality of light emitting sources after the light is attenuated by tissue of a patient, wherein the detector is configured to generate a signal indicative of a physiological parameter of the patient; and

at least one information element arranged as a second element of the plurality of elements in the electrical grid, wherein, in response to being activated, the at least one information element provides an output indicative of information about the physiological sensor,

wherein addressing one of the plurality of rows and one of the plurality of columns activates one of the plurality of elements in the electrical grid.

2. The physiological sensor according to claim 1 , wherein to address the one of the plurality of rows and the one of the plurality of columns, a row driver sources current to the one of the plurality of rows and a column driver sinks current from the one of the plurality of columns.

3. The physiological sensor according to claim 1 , wherein the electrical grid comprises at least one of at least three rows or at least three columns.

4. The physiological sensor according to claim 1 , wherein the plurality of light emitting sources comprises at least six light emitting sources.

5. The physiological sensor of claim 1 , wherein the at least one information element comprises at least one circuit comprising a resistor and a diode.

6. The physiological sensor of claim 5 , wherein the at least one information element is activated by addressing a first row of the plurality of rows and a first column of the plurality of columns, wherein the diode comprises an anode and a cathode, the anode being proximal to the first row of the plurality of rows with respect to the cathode and the cathode being proximal to the first column of the plurality of columns with respect to the anode.

7. The physiological sensor of claim 5 , wherein the diode is oriented to prevent parasitic currents from activating the plurality of light emitting sources.

8. The physiological sensor of claim 1 , wherein the at least one information element comprises a circuit comprising a first resistor, a second resistor, and a capacitor, and wherein the second resistor is in series with the capacitor and the first resistor is in parallel with the second resistor and the capacitor.

9. The physiological sensor of claim 1 , wherein the at least one information element comprises a circuit comprising a first resistor, a second resistor, and an inductor, and wherein the second resistor is in parallel with the inductor and the first resistor is in series with the second resistor and the inductor.

10. The physiological sensor of claim 1 , wherein the at least one information element comprises a circuit comprising a first resistor, a second resistor, and a diode, and wherein the second resistor is in series with the diode and the first resistor is in parallel with the second resistor and the diode.

11. The physiological sensor of claim 1 , wherein the at least one information element is configured to convey a first set of the information about the physiological sensor at a first polarity and convey a second set of the information about the physiological sensor at a second polarity.

12. The physiological sensor of claim 1 , wherein the information about the physiological sensor comprises one or more of an indication of sensor type, authorized supplier, authorized manufacturer, or wavelength corresponding to the at least one of the plurality of light emitting sources.

13. The physiological sensor of claim 1 , wherein at least a subset of the plurality of light emitting sources is further arranged in two or more clusters, each cluster of the two or more clusters comprising at least two light emitting sources that emit light within a wavelength range that is different from and does not overlap with the wavelength range of the at least two light emitting sources of other clusters of the two or more clusters.

14. A method for determining information about a physiological sensor or measuring an indication of a physiological parameter of a patient, the method comprising:

positioning a sensor with respect to body tissue of a patient, the sensor comprising:

a plurality of light emitting sources arranged as first elements of a plurality of elements in an electrical grid comprising a plurality of rows and a plurality of columns, wherein, in response to being activated, a light emitting source of the plurality of light emitting sources emits light,

at least one information element arranged as a second element of the plurality of elements in the electrical grid, wherein, in response to being activated, the at least one information element provides an output indicative of information about the physiological sensor, and

a detector configured to generate a signal indicative of a physiological parameter of the patient responsive to light emitted by one or more of the plurality of light emitting sources;

addressing one of the plurality of rows and one of the plurality of columns to activate one of the plurality of elements in the electrical grid; and

based at least in part on activation of the one of the plurality of elements, performing an action, wherein said action comprises at least one of outputting an indication of the information about the physiological sensor or outputting the signal generated by the detector.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein addressing a first row of the plurality of rows and a first column of the plurality of columns activates the at least one information element.
