Abstract

A surgical system includes a shaft having a distal end and a proximal end, the proximal end including a grip, a sensor attached to the distal end of the shaft, at least one visual indicator disposed at the distal end of the shaft, and a controller coupled to the sensor and the at least one visual indicator, the controller actuating the at least one visual indicator according to a signal received from the sensor.

Claims (35)

1. A surgical system comprising:

a shaft having a distal end and a proximal end, first and second jaws attached to the distal end of the shaft and the proximal end including a grip;

a sensor attached to the distal end of the shaft;

at least one visual indicator disposed at the distal end of the shaft and comprising a single light emitting element capable of partial illumination along a length of the at least one visual indicator; and

a controller coupled to the sensor and the at least one visual indicator, the controller configured to actuate the single light emitting element of the at least one visual indicator partially along the length of the at least one visual indicator according to a signal received from the sensor, the partially actuated light emitting element representing a location of a vessel between the first and second jaws attached to the distal end of the shaft,

wherein the at least one visual indicator comprising the single light emitting element is disposed along a portion of the shaft, a first plurality of line segments is disposed over or adjacent the single light emitting element, and a second plurality of line segments is disposed on one or both of the first and second jaws, the first plurality of line segments corresponding to the second plurality of line segments.

2. The surgical system according to claim 1 , the sensor attached to the distal end of the shaft by being disposed on at least one of the first and second jaws.

3. The surgical system according to claim 2 , wherein the sensor comprises a light sensor and further comprising a light emitter, the light emitter disposed on one of the first and second jaws.

4. The surgical system according to claim 3 , wherein the light emitter is attached to the first jaw and the light sensor is attached to the second jaw.

5. The surgical system according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one visual indicator is integral with the distal end of the shaft.

6. A surgical system comprising:

a shaft having a distal end and a proximal end, first and second jaws attached to the distal end of the shaft and the proximal end including a grip;

a sensor attached to the distal end of the shaft;

at least one visual indicator disposed at the distal end of the shaft and comprising an array of light emitting elements; and

a controller coupled to the sensor and the at least one visual indicator, the controller configured to actuate light emitting elements of the at least one visual indicator according to a signal received from the sensor, actuated light emitting elements representing a location of a vessel between the first and second jaws attached to the distal end of the shaft,

wherein the at least one visual indicator comprising the array of light emitting elements is disposed along a portion of the shaft, a first plurality of line segments is disposed over or adjacent the light emitting elements, and a second plurality of line segments is disposed on one or both of the first and second jaws, the first plurality of line segments corresponding to the second plurality of line segments.

7. The surgical system according to claim 6 , wherein individual elements of the array are continuous.

8. The surgical system according to claim 6 , wherein individual elements of the array provide light of different colors.

9. The surgical system according to claim 6 , the sensor attached to the distal end of the shaft by being disposed on at least one of the first and second jaws.

10. The surgical system according to claim 9 , wherein the sensor comprises a light sensor and further comprising a light emitter, the light emitter disposed on one of the first and second jaws.

11. The surgical system according to claim 10 , wherein the light emitter is attached to the first jaw and the light sensor is attached to the second jaw.

12. A surgical system comprising:

a shaft having a distal end and a proximal end, first and second jaws attached to the distal end of the shaft and the proximal end including a grip;

a sensor attached to the distal end of the shaft;

at least one visual indicator disposed at the distal end of the shaft and comprising an array of light emitting elements; and

a controller coupled to the sensor and the at least one visual indicator, the controller configured to actuate light emitting elements of the at least one visual indicator according to a signal received from the sensor, actuated light emitting elements representing a location of a vessel between the first and second jaws attached to the distal end of the shaft,

wherein the at least one visual indicator comprising the array of light emitting elements is disposed along a portion of the shaft, the array of light emitting elements having demarcations between light emitting elements, and a plurality of line segments is disposed on one or both of the first and second jaws, the demarcations corresponding to the plurality of line segments.

13. The surgical system according to claim 12 , wherein the light emitting elements extend about the periphery of the shaft.

14. The surgical system according to claim 12 , wherein individual elements of the array are continuous.

15. The surgical system according to claim 12 , wherein individual elements of the array are not contiguous.

16. The surgical system according to claim 15 , further comprising spacers disposed between the individual elements of the array.

17. The surgical system according to claim 12 , wherein individual elements of the array provide light of different colors.

18. The surgical system according to claim 12 , the sensor attached to the distal end of the shaft by being disposed on at least one of the first and second jaws.

19. The surgical system according to claim 18 , wherein the sensor comprises a light sensor and further comprising a light emitter, the light emitter disposed on one of the first and second jaws.

20. The surgical system according to claim 19 , wherein the light emitter is attached to the first jaw and the light sensor is attached to the second jaw.
