Abstract

Enhanced fluid filtration methods, systems, and techniques are disclosed that can leverage the function of a supplemental pump in combination with the existing components of a machine, such as the main pump of an electrically-powered machine with an engine. In various embodiments, a supplemental filter apparatus may be operatively associated with the supplemental pump to provide filtration of fluid flowing through the machine. A control module may be operatively associated with the supplemental pump and/or various components of the machine. The control module may be programmed to activate or deactivate the supplemental pump, a valve, or take other actions in association with detecting the existence of one or more filter triggering conditions.

Claims (50)

1. A fluid filtration apparatus for use with an engine of a machine, the engine comprising a main pump and at least one filter, the fluid filtration apparatus comprising:

a supplemental filter apparatus comprising an inlet and an outlet, wherein the outlet of the supplemental filter apparatus is coupled to the engine;

a supplemental pump comprising an inlet and an outlet, wherein:

the inlet of the supplemental pump is coupled to the engine; and

the outlet of the supplemental pump is coupled to the inlet of the supplemental filter apparatus;

a sensor configured to detect a filter triggering condition;

a control module coupled to the sensor, wherein the control module is configured to activate the supplemental pump based on the detected filter triggering condition, wherein the activated supplemental pump is configured to direct a flow of fluid from the engine through the supplemental filter apparatus and back to the engine; and

a valve assembly coupled to the control module, wherein the valve assembly comprises an inlet and an outlet, wherein the outlet of the valve assembly shares a common junction with the outlet of the supplemental filter apparatus.

2. The fluid filtration apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the supplemental filter apparatus comprises a fine filtration medium.

3. The fluid filtration apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the supplemental pump comprises a pre-lubrication pump.

4. The fluid filtration apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the supplemental pump forms a part of one of the following:

a power steering system; and

a power braking system.

5. The fluid filtration apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the supplemental pump is positioned onboard the machine.

6. The fluid filtration apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the filter triggering condition comprises at least one of the following:

a threshold temperature of the fluid; and

a threshold pressure of the fluid.

7. The fluid filtration apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the filter triggering condition comprises a threshold engine component speed.

8. The fluid filtration apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the filter triggering condition comprises a threshold contaminant level of the fluid.

9. The fluid filtration apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the filter triggering condition comprises at least one of the following:

a threshold time duration of engine operation; and

a threshold time duration between fluid operations performed on the engine.

10. The fluid filtration apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the filter triggering condition comprises a fuel consumption value.

11. The fluid filtration apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the filter triggering condition comprises a filter condition.

12. The fluid filtration apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the filter triggering condition comprises a deviation from a predetermined range.

13. The fluid filtration apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the control module is further configured to deactivate the supplemental pump during operation of the engine.

14. The fluid filtration apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the control module is further configured to process time stamp data associated with at least one component of the engine.

15. The fluid filtration apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the inlet of the valve assembly is coupled to the outlet of the supplemental pump and the inlet of the supplemental filter apparatus.

16. A fluid filtration apparatus, comprising:

a supplemental pump coupled to a fluid system of a machine, the machine comprising a main pump and at least one filter, wherein the supplemental pump is positioned onboard with respect to the machine;

a supplemental filter apparatus coupled to the supplemental pump and the fluid system;

a valve assembly comprising an inlet and an outlet, wherein:

the inlet of the valve assembly shares a common junction with an outlet of the supplemental pump and an inlet of the supplemental filter apparatus; and

the outlet of the valve assembly is coupled to an outlet of the supplemental filter apparatus and the fluid system of the machine; and

a control module coupled to the valve assembly, wherein the control module is configured to actuate the valve assembly based on a filter triggering condition.

17. The fluid filtration apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the control module is further configured to activate the supplemental pump based on the filter triggering condition.

18. The fluid filtration apparatus of claim 17 , further comprising a sensor coupled to the control module, wherein the sensor is configured to detect the filter triggering condition.

19. A fluid filtration apparatus, comprising:

a supplemental pump coupled to a fluid system of a machine, the machine comprising a main pump and at least one filter, wherein the supplemental pump is positioned onboard with respect to the machine;

a supplemental filter apparatus coupled to the fluid system;

a check valve coupled to the fluid system;

a multi-position valve comprising:

an inlet connected to the supplemental pump;

a first outlet connected to the supplemental filter apparatus; and

a second outlet connected to the check valve; and

a control module coupled to the supplemental pump, the check valve and the multi-position valve, wherein the control module is configured to actuate at least one of the check valve, the multi-position valve and the supplemental pump based on a filter triggering condition.

20. The fluid filtration apparatus of claim 19 , wherein the multi-position valve is coupled to:

an outlet of the supplemental pump;

an inlet of the supplemental filter apparatus; and

an inlet of the check valve.
