Abstract

A prosthetic valve is advanced to a heart of a subject while the prosthetic valve is in a compressed state thereof, the prosthetic valve including a plurality of snares coupled to a tubular valve body. The prosthetic valve is positioned within the heart such that the plurality of snares is disposed upstream of the leaflets, and the plurality of snares is expanded upstream of the leaflets. Subsequently the prosthetic valve is moved in a downstream direction such that the plurality of snares is disposed downstream of the leaflets. Subsequently, the prosthetic valve is secured at the native valve while the plurality of snares remains disposed downstream of the leaflets.

Claims (20)

1. A method for use with a native valve of a heart of a subject, the native valve having native leaflets, the method comprising:

advancing a prosthetic valve to the heart while the prosthetic valve is in a compressed state thereof, the prosthetic valve including a plurality of snares coupled to a tubular valve body;

positioning the prosthetic valve within the heart such that the plurality of snares is disposed upstream of the leaflets, and expanding radially outward the plurality of snares upstream of the leaflets;

subsequently, moving the prosthetic valve in a downstream direction such that the plurality of snares is disposed downstream of the leaflets;

subsequently, securing the prosthetic valve at the native valve while the plurality of snares remains disposed downstream of the leaflets; and

expanding the valve body subsequently to expanding the plurality of snares radially outward.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the prosthetic valve includes an upstream frame that is coupled to the valve body, and wherein the method further comprises placing the upstream frame against an upstream surface of the native valve.

3. The method according to claim 2 , wherein securing the prosthetic valve comprises sandwiching tissue of the native valve between the upstream frame and the plurality of snares.

4. The method according to claim 2 , wherein securing comprises placing the plurality of snares against a downstream surface of the native valve such that the plurality of snares inhibits movement of the prosthetic valve in an upstream direction through the native valve.

5. The method according to claim 4 , wherein placing the upstream frame against the upstream surface of the native valve comprises placing the upstream frame against the upstream surface of the native valve subsequently to placing the plurality of snares against the downstream surface of the native valve.

6. The method according to claim 5 , wherein placing the upstream frame against the upstream surface of the native valve comprises expanding the upstream frame.

7. The method according to claim 6 , wherein securing the prosthetic valve at the native valve comprises sandwiching tissue of the native valve between the upstream frame and the plurality of snares by expanding at least one of: the valve body and the upstream frame.

8. The method according to claim 1 , wherein positioning the prosthetic valve comprises identifying a position of the prosthetic valve within the heart using an imaging technique selected from the group consisting of: ultrasonography and fluoroscopy.

9. The method according to claim 1 , wherein securing the prosthetic valve at the native valve comprises securing the prosthetic valve at the native valve such that the valve body is disposed between the leaflets.

10. The method according to claim 1 , wherein expanding the plurality of snares comprises exposing the plurality of snares from a sheath such that the plurality of snares automatically expands.

11. The method according to claim 1 , wherein expanding the valve body comprises exposing the valve body from a sheath such that the valve body automatically expands.

12. The method according to claim 1 , wherein expanding the valve body comprises expanding the valve body between the leaflets.

13. The method according to claim 1 , wherein advancing the prosthetic valve to the heart comprises transapically advancing the prosthetic valve to the heart.

14. The method according to claim 1 , wherein advancing the prosthetic valve to the heart comprises transfemorally advancing the prosthetic valve to the heart.

15. The method according to claim 1 , wherein expanding the valve body comprises expanding the valve body subsequently to the step of moving the prosthetic valve in the downstream direction.
