Amine and amine oxide surfactants for controlling herbicide spray drift
Spray drift during the application of an aqueous mixture of glyphosate and an auxinic herbicide is reduced by incorporating certain tertiary amine or tertiary amine oxide surfactants into the aqueous solution or mixture to be sprayed.
1. A method of reducing spray drift of an aqueous herbicidal spray mixture, comprising:
formulating an aqueous herbicidal spray mixture comprising:
glyphosate;
an auxinic herbicide; and
from about 0.02 to about 2 weight percent of a tertiary amine surfactant of the formula:
wherein R 1 represents a straight or branched chain (C 12 -C 18 ) alkyl and R 2 and R 3 independently represent a straight or branched chain (C 1 -C 18 ) alkyl, and
wherein the aqueous herbicidal spray mixture comprises a plurality of spray droplets having a volume mean diameter greater than 165 μm.
2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the auxinic herbicide is a water soluble salt of 2,4-D, a water soluble salt of triclopyr, a water soluble salt of dicamba, or mixtures thereof.
3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the tertiary amine surfactant is selected from the group consisting of cocoalkyldimethylamine, dimethyltallowalkylamine, and mixtures thereof.

The method of claim 2 , wherein the water-soluble salt of the auxinic herbicide is selected from the group consisting of isopropyl ammonium salt, dimethyl ammonium salt, trietbyl ammonium salt, monoethanol ammonium salt, diethanol ammonium salt, diethyleneglycol ammonium salt, triisopropanol ammonium salt, tetramethyl ammonium salt, tetraethyl ammonium salt, and choline salt.
5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of spray droplets has a volume percent of spray droplets smaller than 150 μm in diameter that is less than that of an aqueous spray mixture that does not include the tertiary amine surfactant.
6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the aqueous spray mixture is homogeneous and free-flowing at temperatures between 54° C. and −10° C.
7. The method of claim 2 , wherein the tertiary amine surfactant is selected from the group consisting of cocoalkyldimethylamine, dimethyltallowalkylamine, and mixtures thereof.

The method of claim 3 , wherein the water-soluble salt of the auxinic herbicide is selected from the group consisting of isopropyl ammonium salt, dimethyl ammonium salt, triethyl ammonium salt, monoethanol ammonium salt, diethanol ammonium salt, diethyleneglycol ammonium salt, triisopropanol ammonium salt, tetramethyl ammonium salt, tetraethyl ammonium salt, and choline salt.
9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of spray droplets has a volume percent of spray droplets smaller than 150 μm in diameter that is equal to or less than about 15.7%.
10. A reduced spray drift aqueous herbicidal spray formulation, comprising:
a plurality of spray droplets having a volume mean diameter greater than 165 μm comprising:
glyphosate;
an auxinic berbicide; and
from about 0.02 to about 2 weight percent of a tertiary amine surfactant of the formula:
wherein R 1 represents a straight or branched chain (C 12 -C 18 ) alkyl and R 2 and R 3 independently represent a straight or branched chain (C 1 -C 18 ) alkyl.
11. The formulation of claim 10 , wherein the auxinic herbicide is a water soluble salt of 2,4-D, a water soluble salt of triclopyr, a water soluble salt of dicamba, or mixtures thereof.
12. The formulation of claim 10 , wherein the tertiary amine surfactant is selected from the group consisting of cocoalkyldimethylamine, dimethyltallowalkylamine, and mixtures thereof.
13. The formulation of claim 11 , wherein the water-soluble salt of the auxinic herbicide is selected from the group consisting of isopropyl ammonium salt, dimethyl ammonium salt, triethyl ammonium salt, monoethanol ammonium salt, diethanol ammonium salt, diethyleneglycol ammonium salt, triisopropanol ammonium salt, tetramethyl ammonium salt, tetraethyl ammonium salt, and choline salt.
14. The formulation of claim 10 , wherein the plurality of spray droplets has a volume percent of spray droplets smaller than 150 μm in diameter that is less than that of an aqueous spray mixture that does not include the tertiary amine surfactant.
15. The formulation of claim 10 , wherein the aqueous spray mixture is homogeneous and free-flowing at temperatures between 54° C. and −10° C.
16. The formulation of claim 11 , wherein the tertiary amine surfactant is selected from the group consisting of cocoalkyldimethylamine, dimethyltallowalkylamine, and mixtures thereof.
17. The formulation of claim 12 , wherein the water-soluble salt of the auxinic herbicide is selected from the group consisting of isopropyl ammonium salt, dimethyl ammonium salt, triethyl ammonium salt, monoethanol ammonium salt, diethanol ammonium salt, diethyleneglycol ammonium salt, triisopropanol ammonium salt, tetramethyl ammonium salt, tetraethyl ammonium salt, and choline salt.
18. The formulation of claim 10 , wherein the plurality of spray droplets has a volume percent of spray droplets smaller than 150 μm in diameter that is equal to or less than about 15.7%.
19. A method of reducing spray drift of an aqueous herbicidal spray mixture, comprising:
formulating an aqueous herbicidal spray mixture comprising:
glyphosate;
an auxinic herbicide; and
from about 0.02 to about 2 weight percent of a tertiary amine surfactant of the formula:
wherein R 1 represents a straight or branched chain (C 12 -C 18 ) alkyl and R 2 and R 3 independently represent a straight or branched chain (C 1 -C 18 ) alkyl, and
wherein the aqueous herbicidal spray mixture comprises a plurality of spray droplets having a volume mean diameter greater than 165 μm; and
spraying the formulation with a flat fan nozzle at 40 psi.
