Claims (25)

1. In combination, a gaming machine having a button deck and a push-button mounted to said deck, comprising:

a base having a top side and an opposing bottom side, said bottom side of said base connected to a closed planar top of said deck;

an annular lock ring connected to said base, said annular lock ring defining a central opening and at least one peripheral inset;

a button cover movable between a first undepressed position and a second depressed position, said button cover having a central portion located at said central opening of said annular lock ring, and a peripheral wall which extends downwardly from said central portion at one or more locations, at least a portion of said button cover extending into said at least one peripheral inset of said annular lock ring;

means for generating a tactile feedback when said button cover is moved to said second depressed position; and

an input/output mechanism which generates an output in response to movement of said button cover from said first undepressed position to said second depressed position, said input/output mechanism comprising at least one actuator located above said top of said deck and movable downwardly towards said deck when said button cover is moved from said first undepressed position to said second depressed position, and at least one detector positioned below a bottom of said deck, said at least one detector generating an output in response to the detection of movement of said at least one actuator towards said deck.

2. The combination in accordance with claim 1 wherein said deck comprises a video display panel.

3. The combination in accordance with claim 1 wherein said deck comprises glass.

4. The combination in accordance with claim 1 wherein said means for generating a tactile feedback comprises a discontinuity in said button cover wherein said peripheral wall deflects outwardly when said button cover is moved from said first undepressed position to said second depressed position.

5. The combination in accordance with claim 1 wherein said means for generating a tactile feedback comprises a resilient pad located between said top side of said base and a peripheral tab which extends outwardly from said peripheral wall of said button cover.

6. The combination in accordance with claim 1 wherein said at least one actuator comprises a magnet mounted to said button cover and said at least one detector comprises a Hall-effect sensor.

7. The combination in accordance with claim 1 wherein said at least one detector is mounted to a circuit board located below said bottom of said deck.

8. The combination in accordance with claim 1 wherein said means for generating a tactile feedback comprises a tactile dome located between said base and said button cover.

9. The combination in accordance with claim 8 wherein said tactile dome is deformable between a first position and a second position.

10. The combination in accordance with claim 9 wherein said tactile dome generates a tactile output when moved from at least one of said first position to said second position and said second position to said first position.

11. The combination in accordance with claim 10 wherein said tactile dome generates an audible output when moved from at least one of said first position to said second position and said second position to said first position.

12. The combination in accordance with claim 1 wherein said annular ring is light transmitting.

13. The combination in accordance with claim 12 wherein said annular ring is illuminated.

14. The combination in accordance with claim 12 further comprising at least one light-emitting element for illuminating at least a portion of said annular ring.

15. The combination in accordance with claim 1 further comprising at least one legend insert located under said button cover.

16. The combination in accordance with claim 15 wherein said legend insert bears information which is viewable through said button cover.

17. The combination in accordance with claim 1 wherein said base is connected to said deck with adhesive.

18. The combination in accordance with claim 1 wherein a tab extends outwardly from said peripheral wall of said button cover into said at least one peripheral inset.

19. The combination in accordance with claim 1 wherein said at least one peripheral inset comprises an annual peripheral inset extending into said annular lock ring from said central opening.

20. The combination in accordance with claim 18 wherein movement of said button cover to said first undepressed position is limited by contact of said tab with a portion of said annual lock ring above said at least one peripheral inset.
