Abstract

A method for pruning a fruit plant. An exemplary method step includes obtaining an image of the fruit plant that has branches. Next, creating exclusion zones surrounding the branches. Then pruning the fruit plant based upon the exclusion zones.

Claims (37)

1. A method for harvesting fruit comprising:

obtaining an image of the fruit plant comprising branches;

creating fruit zones surrounding the branches; and

harvesting the fruit from the plant based upon the fruit zones;

wherein the harvesting comprises utilizing graphic processor unit processing to locate fruit buds in the fruit zones; and

wherein the utilizing the graphic processor unit processing comprises:

placing a circle around the fruit bud;

locating a center of the circle in X, Y coordinates; and

determining a distance from a preselected point on the plant to the center of the circle and configure the distance in X, Y coordinates.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the harvesting comprises locating buds in the fruit zones from a library of fruit buds.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the image comprises an image of the fruit plant after pruning.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein the obtaining comprises developing an image of the fruit plant after pruning.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the harvesting comprises differentiating between leaf buds and fruit buds.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising developing a table of X, Y coordinates representing respective distances of fruit buds to the preselected point on the plant.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the harvesting comprises developing a virtual matrix comprising data points for three-dimension space representing distances between a harvesting apparatus and the fruit.

8. The method of claim 7 wherein the harvesting apparatus comprises a vehicle.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein the vehicle is a self-propelled vehicle comprising robotic arms with cutting devices.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein:

the fruit is in a row of fruit plants;

the cutting devices perform the harvesting of the fruit; and

the self-propelled vehicle moves along the row of the fruit plants simultaneously with the harvesting of the fruit.

11. The method of claim 1 wherein the harvesting comprises developing a library of image locations of the fruit plant devoid of fruit buds.

12. The method of claim 1 wherein the creating comprises distinguishing between different tree varieties.

13. The method of claim 1 wherein the creating comprises determining where the fruit will be located on respective branches of the fruit plant.

14. The method of claim 1 wherein the harvesting comprises utilizing a neural network to differentiate between leaf buds and fruit buds.

15. The method of claim 1 wherein the harvesting comprises differentiating between fruit buds and at least one of the following: leaf buds, limbs, and twigs.

16. The method of claim 7 wherein the data points are mapped in GPS units which provides an Absolute Data reference.

17. The method of claim 7 wherein the data points comprise global position numbers of latitude, longitude and elevation.

18. The method of claim 1 wherein the harvesting comprises utilizing a Digital Imaging System (DIS) to direct an end effector the last 6 to 8 inches of the harvesting.

19. The method of claim 1 wherein the harvesting comprises distinguishing between color and size of the fruit to determine if the fruit is desirable to harvest.

20. The method of claim 1 wherein the obtaining an image further comprises generating two-dimensional stick images of the plant trunk, branches and limbs.

21. The method of claim 20 wherein the harvesting further comprises utilizing a robotic arm and an end effector.

22. The method of claim 21 wherein the harvesting further comprises relying upon the two-dimensional stick images to avoid damaging the plant trunk, branches and limbs while utilizing the robotic arm and the end effector.

23. The method of claim 20 wherein the obtaining an image further comprises converting the two-dimensional stick images into three-dimensional stick images.

24. The method of claim 23 wherein the harvesting further comprises:

utilizing a robotic arm and an end effector to gather the fruit; and

relying upon the three-dimensional stick images to avoid damaging the plant trunk, branches and limbs while utilizing the robotic arm and the end effector.
