Abstract

A cleat assembly mounting system includes a shoe sole with a curved underside portion with mounting holes. A cleat assembly for engaging a bicycle pedal is mounted to a curved underside portion of the sole. A shim between the sole and the cleat assembly has shim holes configured for alignment with the mounting holes. Each mounting hole is a slot extending in a first direction with a width less than its length. Each shim hole is a slot extending in a second direction with a width less than its length. The first and second directions are substantially orthogonal. Nut assemblies have one or more nuts for securing the cleat assembly using one or more threaded fasteners through the mounting holes and shim holes. The cleat assembly includes a spring housing, and a bottom plate configured to be secured to the shim and further configured to conformably receive the bicycle pedal.

each of the plurality of mounting holes is configured as a slot extending in a first direction on the curved underside portion of the shoe sole;

the slot has a length defining the first direction, and a width less than the length;

each of the one or more shim holes positioned in proximity to the rearward end of the shim is configured as a slot extending in a second direction on the shim;

the slot has a length defining the second direction, and a width less than the length;

the second direction is substantially orthogonal to the first direction; and

the cleat assembly comprises

a spring housing, and

a bottom plate configured to be secured to the shim and further configured to conformably receive the bicycle pedal.

2. The cleat assembly mounting system of claim 1 , wherein the shim is a contoured shim further having:

a curved top surface shaped to follow the curved underside portion of the shoe sole; and

a flat bottom surface.

3. The cleat assembly mounting system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more nut assemblies comprises a plurality of nut assemblies.

4. The cleat assembly mounting system of claim 3 , wherein:

each of the plurality of nut assemblies has two nuts; and

each of the plurality of nut assemblies further has a bar connecting the two nuts.

5. The cleat assembly mounting system of claim 1 , wherein the cleat assembly is configured to be secured, by the one or more threaded fasteners, to the shim.

6. The cleat assembly mounting system of claim 1 wherein the bottom plate is made of metal.

7. A cleat assembly mounting system comprising:

a shoe sole having

a curved underside portion, and

a plurality of mounting holes;

a cleat assembly for engaging a bicycle pedal;

a shim configured to be secured to the curved underside portion of the shoe sole for mounting the cleat assembly to the shoe sole, wherein:

the shim has a plurality of shim holes configured for alignment with the plurality of mounting holes; and

one or more of the plurality of shim holes is positioned in proximity to a forward end of the shim; and

one or more nut assemblies,

wherein:

each of the one or more nut assemblies has one or more nuts, for securing the shim to the curved underside portion of the shoe sole using one or more threaded fasteners through the plurality of mounting holes and the plurality of shim holes;

each of the plurality of mounting holes is configured as a slot extending in a first direction on the curved underside portion of the shoe sole;

the slot has a length defining the first direction, and a width less than the length;

each of the one or more shim holes positioned in proximity to the forward end of the shim is configured as a slot extending in a second direction on the shim;

the slot has a length defining the second direction, and a width less than the length;

the second direction is substantially orthogonal to the first direction; and

the cleat assembly comprises

a spring housing, and

a metal bottom plate configured to be secured to the shim and further configured to conformably receive the bicycle pedal.

8. The cleat assembly mounting system of claim 7 , wherein the shim is a contoured shim further having:

a curved top surface shaped to follow the curved underside portion of the shoe sole; and

a flat bottom surface.

9. The cleat assembly mounting system of claim 7 , wherein the one or more nut assemblies comprises a plurality of nut assemblies.

10. The cleat assembly mounting system of claim 9 , wherein:

each of the plurality of nut assemblies has two nuts; and

each of the plurality of nut assemblies further has a bar connecting the two nuts.

11. The cleat assembly mounting system of claim 7 , wherein the cleat assembly is configured to be secured, by the one or more threaded fasteners, to the shim.

12. A cleat system for mounting to a shoe sole, the shoe sole including a plurality of mounting holes extending entirely therethrough, the cleat system comprising:

a cleat assembly configured to removably couple to a bicycle pedal;

a shim, distinct from the cleat assembly, that includes a plurality of shim holes extending entirely therethrough, wherein: the shim is configured to be located between the shoe sole and the cleat assembly, and

each shim hole of the plurality of shim holes is oblong with a dimension extending in a first direction that is longer than a dimension extending in a second direction;

a plurality of threaded fasteners configured to secure the cleat assembly to the shoe sole, wherein: each of the plurality of threaded fasteners is configured to pass through a respective one of the plurality of shim holes, and a corresponding one of the plurality of mounting holes; and
