Abstract

In certain embodiments, a vial adaptor comprises a housing configured to couple the adaptor with a vial, an access channel, a regulator channel, and a regulator assembly. The access channel is configured to facilitate withdrawal of fluid from the vial when the adaptor is coupled to the vial. The regulator channel is configured to facilitate a flow of a regulating fluid from the regulator assembly to compensate for changes in volume of a medical fluid in the vial. In some embodiments, the regulator assembly includes a flexible member configured to expand and contract in accordance with changes in the volume of the medical fluid in the vial. In some embodiments, the flexible member is substantially free to expand and contract. In some embodiments, the flexible member is not partly or completely located in a rigid enclosure.

Claims (40)

1. A medical adaptor capable of operating in at least first and second modes to withdraw medical substance from a vial, the medical adaptor comprising:

a medical connector interface;

an access channel through which medicinal fluid from a sealed container can be removed, the access channel extending between the medical connector interface and a distal access port;

a regulator channel comprising a distal portion and a proximal portion; and

a regulator assembly in fluid communication with the proximal portion of the regulator channel, the regulator assembly comprising:

a storage region having a storage width and an internal storage volume;

a flexible enclosure in fluid communication with the proximal portion of the regulator channel, the flexible enclosure capable of transitioning between a stored configuration wherein the flexible enclosure is positioned within the storage region and a deployed configuration, the flexible enclosure having a deployed volume and a deployed width in the deployed configuration; and

an enclosure cover fitted around the storage region and configured to inhibit or prevent the flexible enclosure from rapidly transitioning to the deployed configuration;

wherein:

in the first mode, the medical adaptor is configured to permit withdrawal of a first volume of medical fluid from the vial and configured to regulate pressure within the vial while the flexible enclosure is in the deployed configuration and when the deployed volume is less than the first volume of the medical fluid; and

in the second mode, the medical adaptor is configured to permit withdrawal of fluid from the vial and configured to regulate pressure within the vial while the flexible enclosure is in the stored configuration.

2. The medical adaptor of claim 1 , wherein the enclosure cover is made of a resilient, flexible, and/or stretchable material.

3. The medical adaptor of claim 1 , wherein the enclosure cover includes an aperture on a side of the storage region opposite the medical connector interface.

4. The medical adaptor of claim 3 , wherein the enclosure cover is configured to flex in the vicinity of the aperture as the flexible enclosure transitions to the deployed configuration.

5. The medical adaptor of claim 1 , further comprising a one-way valve in fluid communication with the distal portion of the regulator channel, the one-way valve capable of transitioning between an opened configuration and a closed configuration, wherein the one-way valve facilitates fluid communication from an ambient environment to an interior of the regulator assembly when the one-way valve is in the opened configuration.

6. The medical adaptor of claim 5 , wherein the medical adaptor is configured to selectively pull in filtered air through the one-way valve along an intake fluid path that bypasses the flexible enclosure.

7. The medical adaptor of claim 6 , further comprising a filter positioned in a fluid flow path between the one-way valve and the ambient environment and configured to inhibit or prevent introduction of contaminants into the vial.

8. The medical adaptor of claim 1 , wherein the flexible enclosure comprises a material having a metal component.

9. The medical adaptor of claim 1 , wherein the deployed volume is greater than or equal to about 3,000% of the internal storage volume.

10. The medical adaptor of claim 1 , wherein the deployed width is greater than 110% of the storage width.

11. The medical adaptor of claim 1 , further comprising a cover configured to inhibit or prevent the flexible enclosure from rapidly transitioning between the stored configuration and the deployed configuration.

12. A medical adaptor capable of operating in at least first and second modes to withdraw medical substance from a vial, the medical adaptor comprising:

a medical connector interface;

a piercing member positioned distal of the medical connector interface and configured to extend at least partially into the vial;

an access channel extending between the medical connector interface and a distal access port in the piercing member;

a regulator channel;

a flexible enclosure in fluid communication with the regulator channel, the flexible enclosure capable of transitioning between an unexpanded configuration wherein the flexible enclosure has an unexpanded volume and an expanded configuration wherein the flexible enclosure has an expanded volume; and

an enclosure cover at least partially surrounding the flexible enclosure when the flexible enclosure is in the unexpanded configuration, the enclosure cover having an aperture on a side of the flexible enclosure opposite the medical connector interface, the aperture having a width less than a width of the flexible enclosure as measured perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the piercing member;

wherein:

in the first mode, the medical adaptor is configured to permit withdrawal of a first volume of medical fluid from the vial, wherein the first volume is greater than the deployed volume of the flexible enclosure; and

in the second mode, the medical adaptor is configured to permit withdrawal of fluid from the vial while the flexible enclosure is in the unexpanded configuration.

13. The medical adaptor of claim 12 , wherein the medical connector interface is configured to facilitate a needle-free connection with a syringe.

14. The medical adaptor of claim 12 , further comprising a filtered port through which ambient air can pass into the regulator channel.

15. The medical adaptor of claim 12 , wherein the filtered port is positioned distal of the flexible enclosure.

16. The medical adaptor of claim 12 , comprising a regulator valve positioned in the regulator channel between the flexible enclosure and the piercing member.

17. The medical adaptor of claim 16 , wherein the regulator valve is configured to inhibit passage of liquid from the vial to the flexible enclosure.

18. The medical adaptor of claim 16 , wherein the regulator valve is configured to permit passage of fluid through the regulator valve away from the flexible enclosure at a first cracking pressure and is configured to permit passage of fluid toward the flexible enclosure at a second cracking pressure, wherein first cracking pressure is less than the second cracking pressure.

19. The medical adaptor of claim 16 , wherein the regulator valve is a dome valve having at least one slit therethrough.

20. The medical adaptor of claim 12 , wherein the flexible enclosure is folded along at least two non-parallel lines when in the unexpanded configuration.

21. The medical adaptor of claim 12 , wherein the enclosure cover includes an inner lip positioned between the flexible enclosure and the medical connector interface and an outer lip positioned on a side of the flexible opposite the medical connector interface when the flexible enclosure is in the unexpanded configuration.
